Wheelsets are an important component affecting the dynamic characteristics of railway vehicles. Research on wheelsets has been conducted for a long time. It is possible to generate the restoring force by the individual torque control of the left and right wheels in the independently rotating wheelsets (IRWs). Although this method solves the problems of conventional wheelsets, such as the solid axle wheelsets, the restoring force control must be added to the existing traction force control, and the restoring force requires a higher precision and quicker response than the traction force. In this paper, we study the robust control strategy of wireless trams with independently rotating wheelsets. The interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) and the controller with the actual scale wireless tram are designed to verify the torque control performance. Moreover, we propose an open loop control method to test and verify the traction and restoring force control algorithm of the IRWs.

In this study, we evaluated corrosion behavior of a common rolling stock axle material, RSA1, in seawater. 3-electrode electrochemical cell experiment was conducted using artificial sea water, fabricated according to ASTM-D1141 set by American Society for Testing and Materials, where the corrosion current density and corrosion rate were determined to be $18.3{\mu}A/cm2$ and 0.217 mm/yr, respectively, by employing potentiodynamic test method and impedance spectroscopy method. Considering the fact that life time of railway car is ~25 years, the expected corrosion layer depth is 5mm. Constant-current corrosion test was conducted to accelerate the corrosion process, to reach corrosion periods of 1,3 and 4 years based on Faraday's law, followed by tension tests where the reduced specimen gauge cross-section was re-measured for stress calculation. While no apparent corrosion-related changes in mechanical properties were observed in the elastic regime, the reduction in ductility of the material was found to be increased as the corrosion period increased. The results of this study are expected to be basic corrosion data for the design of rolling stock axles, which will be operated in the sea water environment.

The dynamic load effects, generated by moving trains, are transferred to the railway bridges through tracks. The dynamic load effects may vary due to the dynamic characteristics of the applied vehicle loads and the railway bridges including the track system. However, the track models have been neglected or simplified by spring elements in the most studies since it is quite complicated to consider the track systems in the dynamic analysis models of railway bridges. In this study track system on railway bridges are modeled using a three-dimensional discrete-support model that can simulate the load carrying behavior of tracks. A 40m simply supported prestressed concrete box-girder system adopted for high-speed railway bridges are modeled for simulation works. The train models are composed of 20 cars for KTX. The dynamic response of railway bridges are found to be affected depending on whether the track model is considered for not. The influencing rate depends on the traveling speed and different wheel-axle distance. The dynamic bridge response decreases remarkably by the track systems around the resonant frequency. Therefore, the resonance effect can be reduced by modifying the track properties in the railway bridge, especially for KTX trains.
Railway bridges are highly susceptible to resonance due to the equidistant axle load with constant speed of train. Thus, it is necessary to verify dynamic characteristics and quantities against dynamic guidelines. Recently, many newly developed bridge systems have been developed for medium span length between 30m and 40m. However, less variety of bridge systems are available for span length between 45m and 50m. Steel box girder is considered as an alternative for span length between 45m and 50m. This study is to investigate the dynamic properties and safety of steel box railway bridge. Modal properties are extracted and moving load analyses are performed using mode superposition method. The results are then compared to various standards.

The sources of the vibration of railway vehicles in the cabin are usually bogie, axle, and wheel. The vibrations are transmitted through the floor structures of railway vehicle. The floor structure is the combination of bottom plate, plywood, and rubber. In this research the vibration transmission is measured experimentally and analyzed numerically to find the transmission characteristics of the vehicle floor structures. The result shows that the vibration characteristic of soft rubber is better than hard rubber or wood as the connecting material between the bottom plate and the plywood.
Fatigue and wear in wheels is often due to the forces and loading. These certainly have fundamental effects on reducing the wheel life and increasing the costs related to repairing and maintenance. Modeling and stress analysis of a wheel sample existing in the Iranian fleet have been performed in its contact with U33 and UIC60 rails. The results have been reviewed and analyzed in elastic and elastic-plastic phase and under static (railcar weight) and quasi static loads. Moreover, effects of wheel diameter, axle load, wheel material, rail type are analyzed.
Recently, axle load, operating speed and traffic density on railroads have had a tendency to increase and thereby cause additional pressure applied on used track. These operating conditions frequently result in service failure due to wear caused by wheel-rail contact and fatigue damage under cyclic loading. Among rail defects, the transverse crack, which has been the most dangerous type of fatigue damages, is developed from the subsurface crack near the rail running face and grows perpendicular to the rail surface. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate systematically the growth behavior of transverse crack for rail steel under mixed mode. In this study, the fatigue crack growth behavior of the transverse crack in rail steel was experimentally investigated under mixed-mode variable amplitude loadings.
A wheel and axle failure can cause a derailment with its attendant loss of life and property. The service conditions of railway vehicles have become severe in recent years due to a general increase in operating speeds. Damages of railway wheel are a spalling by wheel/rail contact and thermal crack by braking heat etc. One of the main source of damage is a residual stress. therefore it is important to evaluate exactly. A Residual stress of wheel is formed at the process of heat treatment when manufacturing. it is changed by contact stress developed by wheel/rail contact. Distributions of residual stress vary according to a magnitude of wheel load, a magnitude of friction when acceleration and deceleration. The objective of this paper is to estimate the influence of wheel motion on the residual stress distribution in the vicinity of the running surface.
The dynamic load effects are conveyed to the railway bridges through tracks which are generated by moving trains The dynamic load effects may vary due to the dynamic characteristics of the applied vehicle loads and the railway bridges containing the track system. However, the track effects have been neglected or simplified by spring elements in the most studies since it is quite complex to consider the track systems in the dynamic analysis models of railway bridges. In this study, track system on railway bridges is modeled using a three-dimensional discrete-support model that can simulate the load carrying behavior of tracks. In addition, this program is developed with the precise 20-car model and a continuous PSC(prestressed concrete) box girder bridge, which is the main bridge type of Korea Train express(KTX). Three-dimensional elements are used for both. The dynamic response of railway bridges is found to be affected depending on whether the track model is considered or not. The influencing rate depends on the traveling speed and different wheel-axle distance. The dynamic bridge response is decreased remarkably by the track systems around the resonant frequency. Therefore, the resonance effect can be reduced by modifying the track properties in the railway bridge.
The bi-modal tram guided by the magnetic guidance system has two car-bodies and three axles. Each axle of the vehicle has an independent suspension to lower the floor of the car and improve ride quality. The turning radius of the vehicle may increase as a consequence of the long wheel base. Therefore, the vehicle is equipped with the All-Wheel-Steering(AWS) system for safe driving on a curved road. Front and rear axles should be steered in opposite directions, which means a negative mode, to minimize the turning radius. On the other hand, they also should be steered in the same direction, which means a positive mode, for the stopping mode. Moreover, only the front axle is steered for stability of the vehicle upon high-speed driving. In summary, steering angles and directions of the each axle should be changed according to the driving environment and steering mode. This paper proposes an appropriate AWS control algorithm for stable driving of the bi-modal tram. Furthermore, a multi-body model of the vehicle is simulated to verify the suitability of the algorithm. This model can also analyze the different dynamic characteristics between 2WS and AWS.
