A Study on Improving the Constructing System of Railway Safety Test Facilities (철도안전성능시험설비 구축 체계 개선에 관한 연구)

  • As a mass transportation system, a railway contains potential risks that may result in a high death rate and property losses. Accordingly, Railroad Safety Technology R&D Corps. is adopting the plan of the construction of Railway Safety Test Facilities as a part of the Railway Total Safety Project to enhance the railway safety, and carrying out researches on effective project management methods with Systems Engineering techniques. When a system or a service is realized, such as the Railway Total Safety Project, it needs to be verified by requirements and the process of verification is to check whether customers/stakeholders requirements have been properly transformed into a system or a service. Recently, building the standardized verification system up could be the solution to reduce possible system-failed risks. To support that, we propose the more effectual verification method of constructing the Railway Safety Test Facilities applying the systems engineering tool to the research.

  • To establish the national railway safety system, the railway total safety technology development project has been promoted by Ministry of Construction and Transportation (MOCT) since August 2004. The project has producted successful results in many areas of railway safety, however, it is required that the research field should be re-examined to meet the aim of the project. To do that, the precedence of the investment of research resources should be reviewed and determined. The risk of serious railway accidents such as train collision, derailment and level crossing accidents are estimated. From the estimation result and the statistics on the railway accidents over fast few years, the risk factors of railway accidents can be calculated.

  • Recently, there is an increasing interest on railway noise and vibration. Accordingly, the importance of technology that can assess the vibration and structural noise caused due to the railway operation is increasing. Additionally, the need to construct a railway noise and vibration database which is a basic data for a reliable railway noise and vibration assessment as well is increasing. However, the problem is that the currently constructed database fails to include the factors influencing the occurrence of noise and vibration sufficiently. Therefore, In this paper, design a railway noise and vibration database that includes those factors sufficiently and which enables the continuous data management and accumulation.

  • The government have plans to improve the railway transport capacity and transport hub for the sustainable national transport and logistics system. Specially, there are much efforts to improve transportation capacity such as high speed transportation of rail freight, enlargement of BT train, development of double stack train, etc. between railway transport hubs. If the transport capacity between railway logistics hubs is increased as planned, we must increase the handling capacity of railway hub terminals. But there are limits to enlarge the terminal infrastructure because of investment scale, location circumstances and urban development plans. To ensure the capacity, with the minimum required enlargement of infrastructure, it is necessary to extremely increase the efficiency of terminal operations. For improving the efficiency, we have to introduce the efficient terminal operation systems based on u-IT and operation optimize technologies. In this paper, we analyse the issues and problems of railway terminals(including ICD) and suggest the concept of intelligent railway terminal and the construction components of technology.

  • A railway is a complex system integrated with a lot of technical elements such as rolling stock, power, signal control, communications, tracks, stations, operation control systems, and so on. As a mass transportation system, a railway could contain potential risks that may result in a high death rate and property losses. Accordingly, Railroad Safety Technology R&D Corps. is adopting the plan of the construction of Railway Safety Test Facilities as a part of the Railway Total Safety Project to enhance the railway safety, and carrying out researches on effective project management methods with Systems Engineering techniques.   • The logistics industry is changing with the diversification of demand and related technology development. Thus, the transportation system is also changing to social problems and environmental damage, and the importance of rail freight is increasing with changes in the international logistics environment. This study analyzes railway freight competition structure using freight volume and suggests improving the competitiveness of railroad freight. To achieve the research purpose, this study was conducted using the Hirshmann-Herfindahl Index(HHI) and Location Quotients(LQ) method. As a result, the concentration trend of railway trends has increased from 0.213 to 0.238 during the last 9 years, and LQ analysis has enabled the identification of local competition lines by item. The study result confirmed that policy measures on railway freight system, railway infrastructure construction and railway operation are necessary to enhance railway competitiveness.

  • A control algorithm of thyristor dual converter power system is proposed in this study for a railway power substation. The thyristor dual converter can use regenerative power without an additional system using control algorithm. An autonomous voltage and mode change method is also proposed to provide uninterrupted power to the railway. A 10 kW reduced model of the thyristor dual converter power system is built and tested to verify the validity of the proposed control algorithm.

  • An approach section on an abutment is located between the soil embankment and the structure, which may cause an uneven surface due to different settlement between the abutment and the soil embankment. This study proposes a new type of wall which separates the abutment from the backfill material using mechanically stabilized wall. A new type of keystone which incorporates geotube and wire mesh is proposed and evaluated. Numerical analyses were performed to investigate the applicability of the proposed keystone type, which incorporates Geosynthetic. The maximum horizontal displacements along GRS wall faces, settlements at the top of pavement and track bed, and tensile forces applied on geotextiles under traffic loads were investigated. The results of the numerical analysis showed that the proposed wall can be used for highway and high-speed railway abutment.

Screening Effects of Double-track Electric Railway and Shielded Cables on Communication-Line Inductive Interference (전기철도 복선화 및 차폐 케이블 적용에 따른 통신선 유도장해 차폐 효과)

  • The induced voltage on the telecommunication cable generated by nearby electric railway system may bring about telecommunication errors and safety accidents. In order to reduce the induced voltage and to achieve communication reliability, the effect of the shield cables and the recent double-track railway systems on the inductive interference should be investigated. This paper analyzes the parameters which seriously influence the induced voltage on the telecommunication cables which run parallel with a AT-fed electric railway line, and provides a simulation-based approach to estimate the amount of the induced voltage. Simulation results indicate that the induced noise voltage generated by a double-track railway decreases by 18 % compared to that generated by a single-track railway, showing the screening effect by nearby track. The induced noise voltages on the 50%-shielded cable and 15%-shielded cable decrease to 1/8 and 1/15 of the induced voltage on the non-shielded cable, respectively. A meaningful shield effect is achieved and the induced voltage is minimized by the double-track railway and the shielded cable.
