  • The general situation of system composition and safety management of high-speed railway terminal is investigated and a comprehensive evaluation index system of operational security is established on the basis of railway laws and regulations and previous research results to evaluate the operational security management of the high-speed railway terminal objectively and scientifically. Index weight is determined by introducing interval eigenvalue method (IEM), which aims to reduce the dependence of judgment matrix on consistency test and improve judgment accuracy. Operational security status of a high-speed railway terminal in northwest China is analyzed using the traditional model of fuzzy comprehensive evaluation, and a general technique idea and references for the operational security evaluation of the high-speed railway terminal are provided. IEM is introduced to determine the weight of each index, overcomes shortcomings of traditional analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method, and improves the accuracy and scientificity of the comprehensive evaluation. Risk factors, such as terrorist attacks, bad weather, and building fires, are intentionally avoided in the selection of evaluation indicators due to the complexity of risk factors in the operation of high-speed railway passenger stations and limitation of the length of the paper. However, such risk factors should be considered in the follow-up studies.

  • As visual surveillance systems become more and more common in human lives, approaches based on these systems to solve security problems in practice are boosted, especially in railway applications. In this paper, we first propose a robust snag detection algorithm and then present a railway security system by using a combination of multiple sensors and the vision based snag detection algorithm. The system aims safety at several repeatedly occurred situations including slope protection, inspection of the falling-object from bridges, and the detection of snags and foreign objects on the rail. Experiments demonstrate that the snag detection is relatively robust and the system could guarantee the security of the railway through these real-time protections and detections.

  • There are two kinds of police authorities in Korea. One is the Special Judicial Police, under the authority of the Ministry of Construction and Transportation, charged with maintenance of public order on trains, in stations and other places of business operated by the Korea Railway Corporation. The other is the Local Subway Police, belonging to the Local Police Agencies, whose jurisdiction covers trains, station and other areas managed and operated by local governments. The existence of two separate entities for common objective of railway security has given rise to problems including inefficiency in performance and lack of technical knowledge and synergic effects. This study looks at the need for resolving those problems by restructuring and expanding the Special Judicial Police to bring railway security under a single authority and an integrated railway security systems operation.

  • There are two kinds of police authorities in Korean railway industry, that is, the Special Judicial Police and the Local Subway Police. The existence of two separate entities for common objective of railway security has given rise to problems including inefficiency in performance and lack of customers-focused police service and synergic effects. The purpose of this study is to search for solutions to rail crimes that allows for rapid spatial movements since they take place on fast moving trains.

  • Risk management is an important part of system assurance and it is widely used in safety-related system. Railway signal system is one kind of safety-related system and its most important goal is to guarantee the safety of railway system. The method based on risk management can find and solve the security issues of railway signal system more effectively. This paper introduces the basic conception of risk management, studies the whole process of risk management and related tools and techniques and discusses some key points qualitatively combining with the particularity of railway signal system.

  • A railway security detection system is very important. There are many safety factors that directly affect the safe operation of trains. Security detection technology can be divided into passive and active approaches. In this paper, we will first survey the railway security systems and compare them. We will also propose a subway security detection system with computer vision technology, which can detect three kinds of problems: the spark problem, the obstacle problem, and the lost screw problem. The spark and obstacle detection methods are unique in our system. In our experiment using about 900 input test images, we obtained about a 99.8% performance in F- measure for the spark detection problem, and about 94.7% for the obstacle detection problem.

  • Safety-critical systems related to the railway communications are currently undergoing changes. Mechanical and electro-mechanical devices are being replaced by programmable electronics that are often controlled remotely via communication networks. Therefore designers and operators now not only have to contend with component failures and user errors, but also with the possibility that malicious entities are seeking to disrupt the services provided by theirs systems. Recognizing the safety-critical nature of the types of communications required in train control operations, the communications infrastructure will be required to meet a number of safety requirements such as system faults, user errors and the robustness in the presence of malicious attackers who are willing to take determined action to interfere in the correct operation of a system. In this paper, we proposed the safety strategies employed in the railway communications and a security mechanism for Korean railway communication system. Also, we presented the developed means for validation and determination of communication safety based on the proposed security mechanism in the railway system.

  • Smart railway system, which has been actively studied in recent years, is entering the intelligent stage beyond the automation stage based on ICT (Information & Communication Technology) such as communication technology and information technology. ICT technology used in smart railways is generally supported by various information protection technologies as it is vulnerable to information infringement. As a means of high-speed/mass transportation, it is essential to devise an information protection plan for ICT technology that forms the basis for smartening the railway system. Therefore, this paper presents the necessity of step-by-step information protection that measures for smart railway communication by examining potential risk factors of smart railway communication base and considering information protection factors that can respond to them.

  • With the increase in construction of long railway tunnel, social interest in the railway tunnel fire risk has also increased. However, quantitative fire risk research on this topic is still lacking, especially in terms of consideration of uncertainty of each variables used in risk analysis. Hence, in this study, to improve the overall performance of fire risk analysis technique for railway tunnel, Monte-Carlo simulation method is added to the traditional probabilistic risk analysis based on event tree approach and its validity is investigated by applying it to the real railway tunnel project.

  • Due to speed acceleration, higher requirements have been put forward to high speed railway communication and signaling system. The railway applications, including intra-train, train to ground and trackside networks, demand larger bandwidth, higher reliability and shorter response time from railway communication networks to ensure security operation and passenger communication. However, the current railway communication and signaling system has lagged behind the railway development, so advanced communication technologies are needed to improve the current situation. This paper presents high speed railway communication and signaling system based on 4G LTE technology, introduces its network architecture, key technology and analyzes its technical advantages compared with GSM-R system. According to analysis, LTE based high-speed railway communication network is more effective and reliable.
