  • Softwares in railway system are being used in the area of railway control system, directly associated to safety. Because the instinct characteristic of Software is uncertainty, Software development without safety insurance is very hazardous situation. In order to derive safety certification process in the railway system, certification and approval processes in the nuclear, aviation, and military area are studied. Software quality should be improved by two aspects : one is product aspect, another is process aspect. GS(Good Software) and ES(Excellent Software) certification can be exemplified in a product aspect approach. In those process certification, CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) or SPICE (Software Process Improvement and Capability dEtermination : ISO/IEC15504) is being used as models for assessing process maturity of organization. Following the studies, safety management procedure in the railway system is suggested.

  • The safety of the present railway system has been established through a lot of experience from the railway accident. But nowaday scientific safety assessment methods are exactly required to improve the safety of railway system. In this study, we focused on the methodology of probabilistic risk assessment, which has been developed mainly in the field of nuclear power industry, and considered the process to adopt this method to railway system in order to establish a scientific and comprehensive way of safety assessment.

  • In order to establish railway long-tenn safety policy, various railway safety indexes are required. But these indexes are not use efficiently due to the limitation of safety information. Recently m any safety related information have been obtained based on Railway Safety Act 2004. In this study, various safety index, which can be applied both preventive safety activities and safety measure development, are proposed. These safety indexes are based on common safety index in European Railway Agency, but also include special index in Korea. Proposed safety index include accident results, precursors to accident, infrastructure, accident cost and safety management system. These indexes will be applied in railway industry from 2009.

  • According to the Railroad Safety Act and section 42 of the Enforcement Ordinance, railway operators should conduct railway safety training regularly(6 or 3 hours per three months). But Overall Railroad Safety Audit conducted 2006 pointed out nonfulfillment of a regulations on railway worker's safety training to each of every 4 railway operators, which proved that the training management had not carried out properly. E-learning is used in various fields with development of Internet and IT technologies. It might be a good alternative tool for railway workers who is in shift working of the company 24 hours a day. Because it is difficult to collect those employees for training, e-learning could overcome obstacles of time and distance. In order to find out suitable e-learning model to railway sector, e-learning system for railway safety training has been researched through investigating e-learning technology and present railway safety training condition.

  • It is very important to ensure system safety during the process of developing a system. Railway system is also devoting a great portion for the safety. Nowadays many countries leading railway industry have their own system assessment principles according to the situation of their train control systems. In this paper, several principles to derive Safety Integrity Level are represented in the railway signalling system. The characteristics of those principles are also considered respectively.

  • Safety critical systems are those in which a failure can have serious and irreversible consequences. Nowadays digital technology has been rapidly applied to critical system such as railways, airplanes, nuclear power plants, vehicles. The main difference between analog system and digital system is that the software is the key component of the digital system. The digital system performs more varying and highly complex functions efficiently compared to the existing analog system because software can be flexibly designed and implemented. The flexible design make it difficult to predict the software failures. This paper reviews safety standard and criteria for safety critical system such as railway system and introduces the framework for the software lifecycle. The licensing procedure for the railway software is also reviewed.

  • 2004년 4월 1일 한국의 고속철도인 KTX가 개통되었고, 100년이 넘는 한국철도의 역사 가운데, 철도의 안전관리는 상대적으로 소홀히 취급되어 왔다. 이에 본 연구에서는 철도안전을 도모하고, 철도사고를 효율적이며 체계적으로 관리할 수 있는 시스템의 구축방안을 제시하였다. 먼저, 국내외의 철도사고 관리시스템과 국내 철도사고의 현황을 파악하였으며, 이에 따라 위치개념을 도입하는 GIS(geographic information system)기반 철도사고 관리시스템의 프로토타입을 개발하였다. 이 관리시스템은 공간 데이터베이스와 속성데이터베이스로 구성되어 있으며, 비상대응지도를 제공하는 기능을 가지고 있다.

  • To maintain design-knowledge database and manage configuration for requirement of performance tests and safety standards of High Speed Railway(HSR), It is established that management system of performance tests and safety standards and then constructed that design-knowledge database and documented a performance test and safety specifications for supporting performance test and safety system using Model-Based Systems Engineering(MBSE) tool.

  • Interlocking signalling system plays key role as core system to manage railway operation. The core role of railway operation is to control routing, displaying signal and regulation for train. Interlocking system relate tightly to railway accident because collision and derailment is sometime taken place wrong route setting and signal displaying. Safety activity for interlocking system is inevitable to avoid the accident over its life cycle. The safety activity includes hazard identification and analysis, safety requirement allocation, safety plan, safety activity and ao on. The safety activity need a broad wide range work. In this paper, we concentrate on hazard identification for generic interlocking system and programmable electronic interlocking system and compare between two results. The hazards will be used for safety activity.

  • In this paper, the elemental components and improving purpose in advanced safety management system are reviewed to cope with a railway fire accident. And a considering procedure(V-cycle) of long-term plan for railway fire safety improvement is proposed. For the purpose of preventing recurrence of accident, items which have to be considered in the course of accident investigation and cause analysis are presented according to the stage of investigation activity.
