  • The inter-industrial inducement effects of the korean railway services on the output, value-added, imports of the 403 industrial sectors of the korean economy have been computed by the input-output analysis technique utilizing the 2003 Input-Output Tables, which was published most recently in April 2007 by the Bank of Korea. The korean railway service industry produced \2,766 billion worth of passenger and freight railroad services in the 2003 year, and it has induced \1,701 billion worth of output, \781 billion worth of value-added, and \580 billion worth of imports of the korean industry as a whole. The energy sector industries such as diesel fuel, thermal power generation, nuclear power generation, crude oil, liquid natural gas, bituminous coal, liquid propane gas have been most affected by the korean railway services. Other industries mainly affected by the korean railway services include railroad car manufacturing, cleaning and decontamination, medical and health service, machinery equipment and rental, construction and maintenance, transportation related services, business R&D, property insurance, and telecommunication.

  • With the development of IT industry and formation of web-based knowledge sharing platform, a variety of railway-related information services on the web have emerged, ranging from personal blogs to dedicated portal sites, as in the other sectors. These services are contributing to advancing railway industry after all. As far as it is concerned with specific areas such as railway sector, the internet users are hardly expected to avail satisfactory results in acquiring customized information from the access, as the information served varies on the intension of the web site operator or relevant agency, and indexing categories and sub-categories is not easy to work out in a straight manner. This study will review on the feasibility of standardizing categories and sub-categories for railway industry information on the web, and present optimum categorization and sub-categorization approach for the most satisfactory results when searched, ultimately aiming at laying a foundation to satisfy the wide spectrum of users' need for railway information.

  • Recently, fundamental innovation for the improvement of Korean railway industry is proceeding with the vertical separation into infrastructure and operation, and the privatization of railway operation. And also, with the advent of an era of high-speed railway, starting of Korea Train Express (KTX) will give a great change to circumstances of railway industry. It requires that a railway safety regulation policy and accident survey system cope effectively with this restructuring of railway system. Under these great changes, safety must have the first priority, and the function of management and supervision on railway safety will be ten to the governments responsibility; In this paper, according to changes of railway safety management system, foreign states railway accident system and direction of korea railroad accident survey system will be also introduced.

  • Since 1990s, the European railway sector has undergone both a vertical separation and a vertical integration. Recently Simar and Wilson (2008) provides a bootstrap test procedure for testing whether two groups' mean efficiencies are equivalent. The purpose of this paper is to ascertain the relationship between vertical separation and operational efficiency of railway industry using the Simar and Wilson's bootstrap test procedure not used in previous studies with a data set of 20 European countries from 1998 to 2005. From the value of test statistic it seems that the mean operational efficiencies of vertically separated railway industry were higher than those of vertically integrated railway industry. However the p-value indicates that the differences of mean operational efficiencies are not significat at any meaningful level.

  • This article analyzes the new approach to regulation with regards to the railway industry and determines the government's new role. For this purpose, the regulations are categorized into three dimensions (economic, societal and administrative), following the criteria adopted by the Regulatory Reform Committee. Furthermore, these items are analyzed as compulsory vs. incentive, and prior vs. ex post, according to the managerial characteristics. As a result, some recommendations were derived: the economic regulations should be deregulated and the societal regulations should be modified in order to rationalize the criteria. From this perspective, the government's role needs to be repositioned in order to activate the railway industry.

  • This paper suggests that the introduction of Seoul-Pusan High Speed rail system makes related railway industry to be developed through transfer of high technology and other related industries to be jointly grown by technology' ripple effects. Technology transfer and localization implementation process in the period of technology introduction was reviewed synthetically and problems at that period was also analyzed. And technology development countermeasures of railway industry was discussed in order to maintain and expand railway system technology in the future.

  • Life cycle assessment(LCA) has been developed from the concept of life cycle thinking. Life cycle thinking implies that everyone in the whole chain of a product's life cycle, from cradle to grave, has a responsibility and a role to play, taking into account all the relevant external effects. LCA is an analytical tool for identifying environmental loads and assessing the environmental impact in the whole chain of a product's life cycle. In Europe and Japan, LCA and ecodesign study for railway industry have been actively carried out recently. However, LCA for railway industry in domestic is still infant. LCA is standardized in International Organization of Standardization(ISO), base on the ISO 14040 standards, 307 life cycle inventory(LCI) database for infrastructure and base materials have been established in total since 1999. Some of LCI database can use in performing LCA for trains and railway infrastructure, but still not enough to derive accurate LCA result. Therefore, railway oriented LCA methodology and LCI DB are needed to be developed.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze human safety culture of the railway driver in domestic railway industry. This study proposes safety culture improvement of domestic railway by intensively comparing railway safety system overseas to reinforce domestic railway safety. Domestic railways well known the well-organized railway safety culture has brought up safety issues on their process of private management. With this process, also, domestic safety culture is requested by increasing sense of the safety for general public. This study expects Korean railways to become a well-organized that as removing insecure factors of domestic railway based on result comparing and analyzing the manual, factors and requirements of guideline for internal and external safety culture.

  • Assets are an essential part of a railway financial position and income state. The Railway industry, SOC, has characteristics of possessing vast tangible assets and incurring vast asset-related-costs. For higher liquidity and profitability, the railway industry need more active asset management. Since 2011, IFRS has its changed accounting method for tangible assets, this has subsequently affected asset management. As the railway industry has a high portion of tangible assets, the accounting method for tangible assets is very important. This paper analyzes the newly adopted accounting method for tangible assets and proposes LCC for effective asset management.
