Korean railroad has been accomplished the structural change through separating of facilities and operation of railroad in 2004. The existent government organization was transformed into the public, this caused problem of renovation of railroad management. Korean railroad has been the integrated management of passenger and freight. As putting the passenger service as a priority, freight transportation have fallen behind and not attained good sales results. Restructuring in Korean railroad would bring about considerable improvement, but still not come out of the deficit operation. To find a way out of this situation, there needs to make renovation and extend new enterprise. However, to operate the railway freight transportation more competitively, make up situation that can possess competitive power fundamentally. From this perspective, the purpose of this study is to analyze the necessity for separated operation of passenger and freight railway transportation. By doing this can expect to obtain the competition power of railway freight transportation, and is a help to build up the independent management system of railway freight transportation and secure competitive high position about other transportation systems especially road.

Transportation cost takes a major portion on logistics cost. The reduction of transportation cost is a key issue to achieve national competitiveness and logistics cost reduction. And railway must play a important role to shift from road freight transport to environment-friendly transport. There are many idle freight cars in railway freight transportation and they give rise to inefficient operation of freight car. It is well known that the main reason of idle freight cars is unbalanced demand according to direction. In this study, we analysed the current status on idle freight cars in railway at the level of daily data. This results help follow-up research to cut down idle freight cars in railway.

Multi-purpose freight car is applicable for both bulk freight and containerized freight to cope with the unbalance between demand and supply due to the demand variation by seasons or directions. In this paper, we suggested the advantages of introducing attachable container to railway freight transportation and possible freight items to use multi-purpose freight car. This results can be used to analyse the amount of attachable container and the feasibility of introducing multi-purpose freight car to railway.

The logistics industry is changing with the diversification of demand and related technology development. Thus, the transportation system is also changing to social problems and environmental damage, and the importance of rail freight is increasing with changes in the international logistics environment. This study analyzes railway freight competition structure using freight volume and suggests improving the competitiveness of railroad freight. To achieve the research purpose, this study was conducted using the Hirshmann-Herfindahl Index(HHI) and Location Quotients(LQ) method. As a result, the concentration trend of railway trends has increased from 0.213 to 0.238 during the last 9 years, and LQ analysis has enabled the identification of local competition lines by item. The study result confirmed that policy measures on railway freight system, railway infrastructure construction and railway operation are necessary to enhance railway competitiveness.

After the establishment of 'Staggers' Rail Legislation' in 1980, which established an atmosphere of free competition in rail freight transportation market, freight railway in America became larger and the proportion of freight railway in the market increased. In 2008, it took up 43% of the transportation market based on tonne/mile unit and the productivity of freight rail increased. On the other hand, in the case of Korea, the competing atmosphere is being set up under the influences of the renovation of the rail transportation industry in 2004. However, to make the rail transportation market more active and become more advanced, a lot of efforts are required to build a stronger foundation of free competition atmosphere. In this paper, we have deducted the political implications on the establishment of strengthened competition in Korean rail transportation industry from reviewing what kind of changes the rail transportation market in America went through and how it was developed. In this case, we have focused on the changes in industrial trend towards the restriction policy. Also influences of the deregulation policy after 1980 on the enhanced market efficiency were reviews.

The rail reform in Korea is to separate passenger transportation from freight transportation as a way to vitalize rail freight. The author review the problems rail freight faces, the aims of rail reform, the possibility to introduce competition into the rail freight operation, foreign cases of rail freight and make suggestions about the vitalization of rail freight transportation such as industry structure possible for door-to-door service and low cost operation, freight transportation policy of government, capacity expansion, preparedness for internationalization, mechanism for increasing transparency between users and operators and transfer to commerciality of the carrier.

This study suggests that low cost companies should be created and entered into rail freight market and rail freight operation should be integrated into road transportation to increase the competitiveness of rail freight transportation and to supply door-to-door services. In this Study, we analyzed fare rates of railway by calculating the price elastic of railroad freight. The transportation means of each section needs competitive carriage charges in market price. There are many factors when choosing the means of freight transportation. Therefore the main objective of this paper lies in the study of price elastic theory and evaluating elastic of goods rates of railway.

유라시아 지역으로 화물을 효과적으로 운송하기 위한 방안을 마련하기 위하여 TCR, TSR 등 국제철도와 해운을 이용한 운송현황을 서로 비교할 필요가 있다. 본 연구에서는 유라시아 국제운송로의 이용현황을 살펴보고 주 운송수단으로 이용되는 철도와 해상 간의 운송수단선택 실태를 분석하고자 하였다. 분석 자료는 유라시아 지역 운송을 담당하는 국제물류업체를 대상으로 수행된 SP조사 자료를 활용하였다. 유라시아 운송수단 선택특성을 분석한 결과, 유라시아 지역으로 화물 운송시 운송시간과 운송비용에 따라서 철도와 해운 간의 경쟁관계가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 지역별로 해상과 철도로의 접근용이성에 따라 수단선택특성이 상이한 것을 알 수 있었다. 향후 유라시아 지역의 다양한 국제운송로를 효과적으로 이용하기 위한 방안을 모색하는데 본 연구결과가 활용될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

Bulk freight is transported by a freight car, ship and tank lorry without packaging in a state of particles or powders. In korea, the main bulk freight include oil, grain, coal, cement, iron ore and these are occupied nearly 30% of the volume of gross domestic freight transportation. Therefore it is in important to transport efficient bulk freight transport system for the improvement of national distribution competitive as raw material for industry. Generally environment-friendly transfer modes such as railway and sea transport play an important role in bulk freight transport due to the mass transfer characteristics of bulk freight. This study is carried out for examining the problem of oil, grain, coal, cement, ore transportation through analyzing distribution flow of items and understanding characters of transfer modes.
