  • The purpose of this research is to identify the factors affecting the intention to adopt a transcontinental railway in Korea. We develop an empirically testable model that demonstrates the effects of factors including cost, service, and efficiency of railway transportation, on modal shift intention to railway, attitude of a Railway, and intention to adopt a Transcontinental Railway (KTAR) as a railway transportation mode in the end. A survey method enables us to analyze the model with a structural equation modeling. The empirical analysis reveals that two most influential factors-the modal shift to railway transportation and the attitude of a Railway-play roles in determining intention to adopt the Transcontinental Railway (KTAR). Of the factors of transportation mode, transportation cost has a greater impact than transportation service and transportation efficiency on the intention to adopt a Transcontinental Railway (KTAR).

  • Prestressed concrete girder(PSC girder) bridges have been used widely at the railway as well as highway because they are great in the functional and economical efficiency. Also they have the advantage of convenience of design and construction. However it could be easily verified that the section of PSC girder is excessive design, which has much redundancy against design loads. Thus, in this paper the formulation of the optimum design for PSC girder railway bridge is suggested and dominant design variables and constraints are inquired as performing the optimum design. In order to effective optimum design, design variables are formulated as PSC girder sectional dimension and girder space. The objective is adopted as total cost of PSC girder railway bridge. Also, constraints are formulated according to Korean railway design specification and considering construction-ability such as PS anchorage and girder space. Using the proposed optimum design system, optimum PSC girder railway bridge design has been performed. And from the results of analysis it is suggested to denote the optimum section which satisfies the structural safety and economical efficiency all together.

  • Transportation Efficiency Act of 2009 System National Integrated Transportation System Efficiency Act and the revised Road Traffic in the center of the Intelligent Transportation Systems rail, sea and air transport sector is expanding in various areas to promote business and Industry is planning to. Accordingly, the introduction of Intelligent Transportation Systems Outlook and Direction of the railway sector and to provide a comprehensive introduction of Intelligent Transportation Systems rail sector has raised the need. In this paper, the introduction of Intelligent Transportation Systems rail sector strategy is presented as follows. First, the rail users a convenient rail-centric information system used. Second, the reliability and value-added operating system built for the creation of high-tech rail. Third, crime and accidents are implemented in a safe railway. The results of this paper, the railway sector through the national Intelligent Transportation Systems to develop and introduce strategies to provide operational direction is expected to be present.

  • The energy efficiency and environment-friendly aspect of the railway system would be superior to other on-land transportation systems. In a preliminary feasibility study stage, the energy efficiency and problems related with environment are usually not considered. The railway noise and vibration which could be reasons of environmental problems are focused and studied in this paper. The investment for railway systems could be encouraged by the considering of main environmental elements evaluated with the modified noise and vibration standard for environment-friendly railway construction.

  • To meet demand for large-scale new personnel caused by active railway investment projects such as high-speed line construction, electrification and double-tracking of the existing lines, we KNR need to establish a subsidiary firm for each field instead of personnel augmentation. The establishment of subsidiaries is expected to solve the problem of the current outsourcing services, reduce costs and in the long term, improve the efficiency of railway business. In addition, we also suggest, as a pilot project, setting up Korean Freight Inspection Company in charge of conducting light and heavy maintenance for freight cars.

  • In light of the growing traffic congestion problem and congestion cost, the container transport by railway has to be increased. The freight transport by railway can have decided advantages over trucks in terms of energy efficiency, emissions and cost for certain freight movements, just as transportation in the metropolitan region can have great advantages over driving truck. But the freight transport by truck should gain significant mobility benefits from a freight railway system. Thus, the DMT(Dual Mode Trailer) transport system which is coupled railway transport advantages with load transport advantages has been developed and used in the european countries. The DMT transport will therefore serve the areas required by transport organizers. This paper describes the various DMT transport systems and its strength and weakness.

  • Such traditional construction methods as the interchange or improvement of railway subbase maintenance and reinforcement have many problems in the matters of construction period, constructive and economical efficiency aspects. This paper will describe the alternative railway subbase reinforcement method based on geosynthetics system. It is presently very popular in Germany and Japan. In summary it is to say, that geosynthetics used at fine grained subsoils to a strong improvement of the whole railroad system.
