A Review on Track Design Standards for Selection of Rule Items for Railway BIM (철도 BIM의 룰 항목 도출을 위한 설계기준 검토)

  • Railway is compsed in various components, such as subgrade, track bed, sleeper, rail, and overhead line, on a linear space. Therefore, comprehensive work for various design standards and guidelines is required when designing a railway facility. For this reason, much time and effort are required to review the relevant design standards and guidelines. While, automatic legal check system for BIM models has been developed in the architectural engineering, it has not been developed in the railway engineering. This study reviews the korean design standard and the korean code for railway engineering, and suggests some rule items of logical information. Comparing the suggested rule items to the railway BIM library, items of logical information and additional attribute information are obtained. The analysis results of railway design standards and BIM library presented in this study would be utilized for defining rule-set items that is essential for development of the automatic legal check system for railway BIM models.

Algorithm-based Railway Tunnel BIM Design Considering Railway Alignment (철도 선형을 고려한 알고리즘 기반의 철도 터널 BIM 설계 방안)

  • In process of creating BIM model for tunnel, many user use still CAD, so the workflow for BIM design is not perfect. Therefore, in this paper, we proposes a method to automatically create BIM model without converting 2D drawings in tunnel design. It can allow engineers to design BIM-based tunnel with maximum use of linear information and modify the BIM model whenever there is changed linear information. To do this, we use Dynamo, which can reduce the time required for creating and modifying BIM models during design changes, saving time wasted for BIM conversion design.

  • Recently, the utilization of the BIM system has been extended to cost and resource simulation, visualized management of construction site information and application of augmented reality including basic 3D modeling. Therefore, various BIM functions are being developed for practical applications. However, since clear classification criteria and knowledge information of BIM functions are not sufficient for field engineers, it is difficult to identify the necessary BIM functions for a construction project. This study suggests a BIM function breakdown structure considering the individual functional properties and a process model that can be ordered by applying BIM in a railway construction project. The proposed delivery model is used to obtain a practical utilization of BIM by analyzing features applicable to railway construction projects; model is verified using a case project.

  • Recent technological improvements have made abundant changes in construction industry. In specific, some technical applications, such as Building Information Modeling (BIM) opens up many possibilities. Some studies have articulated the use of BIM and its advantages in construction, but most of them are theoretical, not practical. This study is to provide an insight to such obstacles in BIM research. By investigating a real project that could utilize BIM in planning and construction phases, the authors try to investigate a possible outline of advantages in BIM implementation. The study area was set to a railway construction site in South Korea. The site covers a multiple railway tracks, stations, telecommunication facilities, infrastructure facilities, railway structures, and so numerous. In the site, the authors have identified 12 errors in 7 projects that could be prevented if BIM was utilized before the construction.

  • In the evaluation for ordering BIM-based projects (Design Build) of Korean National Railway, criteria of BIM-based smart construction technology are assessed. Unlike the existing assessment criteria, performance resources and detailed assessment guidelines have been added by this research. The purpose of this study is to propose qualification assessment standards according to specific guidelines when evaluating on the phase of bidding for BIM-based projects. In the study, an improved evaluation standard (draft) was arranged based on two consultation meetings and surveys of related companies, applied to existing projects with the companies that won the bid, and validated. As more specific and added criteria compared to the existing standards, it could reduce the difficulty of evaluation for BIM capability and lay the foundation for railway BIM-based project management.

  • Recently, research on the application of BIM has continuously been active not only in architecture but also in civil engineering in order to improve work efficiency across the project's planning, design, construction and maintenance phases. However, the empirical applications of BIM targeting to civil engineering scope of construction sites still lags compared to architectural sized projects. This is because BIM tools are mainly based upon vertical structures of architecture, thereby most of them have difficulties and limitations to get utilized on horizontal structures of civil engineering. Therefore, this study intends to propose automation technology of design using BIM library and to indicate its field availability through case application on a railway project representing linear infrastructure. In addition, it put forward the utilization plan of the automation technology upto 4D and 5D by continue making use of the BIM model created in the project's design stage up through the maintenance stage. The novel method of the technology proposed in this paper incorporates the automatic creation of the BIM library based on two-dimensional tunnel cross-sections and sweeping of it over three-dimensional alignment to create a BIM model of linear infrastructure. The proposed technology is anticipated to improve the efficiecny of modeling process of railway projects based on linear structures.

  • Domestic and foreign software components are rapidly developing continuously. However, the government's plan to activate BIM remains relatively sluggish. In particular, BIM based information management systems have been developed to enable the development of degraded railway industries in infrastructure BIM based areas. For this purpose, we analyzed domestic and oversea policies and guidelines. We conducted a survey on the personnel of the railroad corporation. Based on the survey result, the elements applicable to BIM were reflected in the system.

  • Building Information Modeling, which was applied mainly in the construction sector, is expanding to the road sector, and the government recently recommends preparing individual application guidelines considering the characteristics of detailed fields such as railways, ports, and complexes through BIM implementation guidelines. Compared to general construction projects, a lot of the works such as signals, electricity, and power, and the railway BIM 2030 roadmap has been presented to apply BIM to railway construction projects that require business consultation and work environment review with various local governments, and pilot projects are in operation. Unlike a general building, in which the construction begins after the detailed design is completed, in the railway project, the detailed design of other works proceeds along with the roadbed construction. Because construction and design work together, railways need to coordinate detailed engineering interfaces such as trajectories, signals, and power, and the application of BIM in design interface coordination has the advantage of maximizing the effectiveness of pre-review. Overseas railway construction projects actively used BIM to adjust design interfaces and had a collaboration process to modify BIM models and create construction details from the revised models through regular meetings with suppliers. Therefore, this study aims to derive the factors necessary for establishing a BIM collaboration environment based on a survey of practitioners as a preliminary step for establishing the BIM collaboration process of the railway construction project.

  • Recently, Building Information Modeling(BIM) has become a hot topic in the construction industry such as quantity calculation, interference check, process management, and construction cost management. It is also trying to convert the existing 2D design to 3D design and introduce the BIM in various fields, thus, many new deliverable are being presented but there are many issues due to the lack of standard guides on the preparation and delivery criteria for such new deliverable and how to utilize performance data. Therefore, In order to develop the electronic delivery process, we analyzed the process related to the delivery of BIM digital models presented in domestic and international BIM guidelines and the delivery of products from the Korea National Railway. The analysis focused on the list of achievements, delivery process, quality review standards, and the utilization code system of the Korea National Railway through BIM guidelines and the National Railroad Service's business procedures. Based on these analysis results, it presents a plan to construct an functional module of electronic delivery.

Deduction of R-PLM technology development consideration (R-PLM 기술 개발 시 고려사항 도출에 관한 연구)

  • The aim of this study was to develop a R-PLM (Railway BIM-based Product Lifecycle Management) technology. The railway engineering productivity can be maximized if the railway product is created using the object modeling method and the railway lifecycle process is managed effectively. Recently, technology known as BIM and PLM was applied to the construction industry to improve the productivity. To define the R-PLM functions, the expert interview and a practitioner interview were conducted to identify the expected outcome and obstacles to R-PLM technology. As a result, the differences between the occupation and the priority of those were derived. Finally, R-PLM technology development consideration was suggested based on the interview results.
