  • This paper is a follow-up paper to the publication, "Development of Tunnel-Environment Monitoring System and Its Installation I - Monitoring System and Measurement in Subway Tunnel" [1]. An environment monitoring system was installed in the 20.3-km-long Gumjung tunnel, which has the general structure of a high-speed double-track railway tunnel. Data were collected for approximately one year. Monthly and daily data were obtained and analyzed for the temperature and relative humidity in summer and winter months. This paper discusses the environmental characteristics at different positions in the tunnel. The results are expected to be widely used in studies on tunnel ventilation and the improvement of air quality and thermal environments.

  • There are many cross tunnelling methods such as NTR, TRCM, Messer Shield, Front Jacking, and Pipe Roof Method. The advantages of adopting RPS(roof panel shield) method in crossing tunnel construction with comparing other existing cross tunnelling method are needed a little space and easy to change the direction of cutting shoe during the construction of pipe roof. The numerical analysis of RPS was performed for the application in the crossing tunnel under railroad. The earth pressure distribution and settlement were predicted when the RPS method was applied during the excavation for crossing railroad tunnel construction.

  • Purpose: This paper investigates and analyzes the loss and damage ratio of maintenance monitoring sensor in metropolitan and high speed railroad tunnel in Korea and abroad. Method: After 5~6 years from the installation, the maintenance monitoring sensor on metropolitan transit tunnels showed the loss and damage ratio from 14.2% to 14.8% in Seoul metro line no. 5, 6, 7, 9, and 13.9% in UK channel tunnel. Based on the result, 15% is thought to be a proper set for the elapsed years, which is 5 years from the installation. Results: The maintenance monitoring sensor on high speed railroad tunnels showed the loss and damage ratio of 60.9% in Ho-Nam high speed railroad on 1 stage after 3 ~ 5 years from the installation, which was approximately 4 times as high as that of Seoul metro line no. 5, 6, 7, 9. Conclusion: Kyung-Bu high speed railroad on 2 stage, after 8~10 years from the installation, showed the loss and damage ratio of 66.8%. Based on the result, it can be inferred that the loss and damage ratio increases drastically after 5~10 years from the installation. Therefore, it is necessary to study on the loss and damage ratio of long term elapsed years, especially more than 10 years from the installation.

  • It is very important to pay careful attention to construction of earthwork/tunnel transition zone for railway. The transition zone of the railway is the section which roadbed stiffness is suddenly varied. Differences in stiffness have dynamic effects and these increase the forces in the track and the extent of deformation. In this study, performance of transition zone was investigated through the field tests. The wheel loads and sleeper settlement were measured after installing field testing sections.

  • The pressure transient inside the passenger cabin of high-speed train has been simulated using computational fluid dynamics(CFD) based on the axi-symmetric Navier-Stokes equation. The pressure change inside a train have been calculated using first order difference approximation based on a linear equation between the pressure change ratio inside a train and the pressure difference of inside and outside of the train. The numerical results have been assessed for the KTX train passing through a 9km long tunnel of Wonju-Kangneung line at the speed of 250km/h assuming that the train is satisfying the train specification for airtightness required by the regulation.

  • KoRail establishes "Guideline for earthquake acceleration measuring instrument and operation." and applies the management of the rapid transit railroad. KoRail manages the trains by train driving patterns subjected to the train operating know-how for the safety against the earthquake hazards. This paper introduces the case studies on bench blast and tunnel blast designs considering a rapid transit railroad.

  • A transient 3-D numerical simulation was performed to analyze the fire safety in a railway tunnel equipped with a mechanical ventilation system. The behavior of pollutants was studied for the emergency operation mode of ventilation system in case of fire in the center of the rescue station and near the escape route. Various schemes of escape route construction for connection angle($45^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, 135^{\circ}$) and slope($10^{\circ}$) were evaluated for the ventilation efficiency in the fire near the escape route. From the results, it was shown that the mode of the ventilation fan operation which pressurizes the tunnel not under the fire and ventilates the smoke from the tunnel under the fire is most effective for the smoke control in the tunnel in case of the fire occurrence. It was also shown that the blowing of jet fan from the rescue tunnel to the main tunnel should be in the same direction as the flow direction in the main tunnel arising from the traffic and the buoyancy.

  • In this study, a model experiment and field experiment was conducted to introduce the optimal tensile force when constructing a non-open cut tunnel according to the ground conditions of sandy soil. CMR (Concrete Modular Roof) method is economical because of the high precision and excellent durability, and corrosion resistance, and the inserted parts can be used as the main structure of a tunnel. In addition the CMR method has a stable advantage in interconnection because the concrete beam is press-fitted compared to the NTR (New Tubular Roof) method, and the need for quality control can be minimized. The ground conditions were corrected by adjusting the relative density of sandy soil during the construction of non-open cut tunnels, and after introducing various tensile forces, the surface settlement according to excavation was measured, and the optimal tensile force was derived. As a result of the experiment, the amount of settlement according to the relative density was found to be minor. Furthermore, analysis of each tensile force based on loose ground conditions resulted in an average decrease of approximately 22% in maximum settlement when the force was increased by 0.8 kN per segment. Considering these results, it is indicated that more than 2.0 kN tensile force per segment is recommended for settlement of the upper ground.
