  • The traffic realizes that people come and go. The mobility is on the basis of location and time. The physical means for the traffic is composed of roads, vehicles and fuel. The current traffic services place emphasis on the physical elements. In the near future, with the current elements, the railroad service is considerably improved of through intangible factors including the customized customer services that the mobile-social network service is newly applied. The intangible things are connected to the increase of the time value for customers.

  • The Trans-Central Asian Railway consists of the Trans-Caspian Railroad, the Kazalinsk Route, the Turk-Sib, and the Trans-Kazakhstan Trunk Line. Currently, one-fifth of the residents in Central Asia are living around these railroads on which 70% of the economic activities in the region depends. The construction of the railroads in Central Asia was motivated by the Russian Empire's competition 'with its maritime rival, the United Kingdom, over the Eurasian heartland in a geostrategic sense. Using the railroads, the Russian Empire aspired to connect its central industrial regions in European Russia with the remote frontier areas in the Central Asian republics and to increase economic specialization of the region. After the breakdown of the USSR, however, the rail network, which had well been linked among the regions in the former Soviet nations, has been in a deteriorated linkage with their non-Soviet neighboring nations. Despite a lot of problems to be solved, the Trans-Central Asian rail network is expected to play a crucial role as a land bridge between East Asia and Europe as well as between Russia/the Baltic sea and the Indian Ocean/the Persian Gulf in the long-term.

Total reference-free displacements for condition assessment of timber railroad bridges using tilt

  • The US railroad network carries 40% of the nation's total freight. Railroad bridges are the most critical part of the network infrastructure and, therefore, must be properly maintained for the operational safety. Railroad managers inspect bridges by measuring displacements under train crossing events to assess their structural condition and prioritize bridge management and safety decisions accordingly. The displacement of a railroad bridge under train crossings is one parameter of interest to railroad bridge owners, as it quantifies a bridge's ability to perform safely and addresses its serviceability. Railroad bridges with poor track conditions will have amplified displacements under heavy loads due to impacts between the wheels and rail joints. Under these circumstances, vehicle-track-bridge interactions could cause excessive bridge displacements, and hence, unsafe train crossings. If displacements during train crossings could be measured objectively, owners could repair or replace less safe bridges first. However, data on bridge displacements is difficult to collect in the field as a fixed point of reference is required for measurement. Accelerations can be used to estimate dynamic displacements, but to date, the pseudo-static displacements cannot be measured using reference-free sensors. This study proposes a method to estimate total transverse displacements of a railroad bridge under live train loads using acceleration and tilt data at the top of the exterior pile bent of a standard timber trestle, where train derailment due to excessive lateral movement is the main concern. Researchers used real bridge transverse displacement data under train traffic from varying bridge serviceability levels. This study explores the design of a new bridge deck-pier experimental model that simulates the vibrations of railroad bridges under traffic using a shake table for the input of train crossing data collected from the field into a laboratory model of a standard timber railroad pile bent. Reference-free sensors measured both the inclination angle and accelerations of the pile cap. Various readings are used to estimate the total displacements of the bridge using data filtering. The estimated displacements are then compared to the true responses of the model measured with displacement sensors. An average peak error of 10% and a root mean square error average of 5% resulted, concluding that this method can cost-effectively measure the total displacement of railroad bridges without a fixed reference.

  • This study presents a simulation of the traction return current based on $2{\times}25kV$ power supply system in order to determine the impedance bond intensity of impulse type track circuit on the electrified Gyeongbu line. The results of the simulation enables us to measure the precise intensity of catenary current that returns to the substation through KTX (Korean Train Express) operated by $2{\times}25kV$ power supply system with common earth network. The combination of $2{\times}25kV$ and common earth network established on the electrified Gyeongbu line for the first time in Korea.   • Induction motors are critical components of many industrial machines and are frequently integrated in commercial equipment. The heavy economical losses and the deterioration of system reliability might be caused by the failure of induction motors in industrial field. Based on the reliability and cost competitiveness of driving system (motors), the faults detection and diagnosis of system is considered very important factors. In order to perform the faults detection and diagnosis of motors, the vibration monitoring method and motor current signature analysis (MCSA) method are emphasized. In this paper, MCSA method are used for induction motor fault diagnosis. This method analyzes the motors supply current. since this diagnoses faults of the motor. The diagnostic algorithm is based on the artificial neural network, and the diagnosis system is programmed by using LabVIEW and MATLAB.

  • This study examined the existing issues and current status of how to best approach the establishment of railroad asset of the corporation in the long run. It also explored some preventative measures for further problems. Based on the law of state property and related railroad statutes, the research referred to basic plans for railroad management of Korea Rail Network Authority, the outcome of file research, handbook of asset management, guidelines and policy of Ministry of Finance and Economy for state property management, recommendations of the Board of Audit and Inspection and fact-finding research of state property (miscellaneous properties). The findings are making a few suggestions on the service of the Korea Rail Network Authority and Korail.

  • Active application of auger-drilled piling is expected in Korea considering its advantage in noise and vibration problems against driven piling and its cost-effectiveness in comparison to the cast in-situ piling. The current design practice being used in Korea is adopted from the Japanese one, however the equipment and construction procedure is modified for the geotechnical conditions and construction circumstances in Korea. Therefore there is an urgent need for the establishment of the rational design criteria for the auger-drilled piling in Korea. As the preliminary work for the establishment, this paper presents the current practice in Korean railway constructions. Design criteria of Korea Railway Network Authority are introduced and its characteristics and the problems are described. Application cases of auger-drilled pile to railway construction are introduced as well.

  • The electrified railway has various power supply schemes. Although the identical trains are operated in same condition and the impedance of track are equal, the genealogy impedance of track is changed according to composition method of feeding scheme. So, the harmonic current flowing into the railway substation are greatly unlike. For simulation of harmonic magnification flowing into the railway substation according to feeding scheme, we propose 6-port network analysis method based on 4-port network, find 6-port equivalent model of each circuit component, and compare and investigate harmonic magnification in the case of parallel post and normal feeding scheme.
