The next generation high-speed train, HEMU-430X, was developed and is now being tested. However, the existing mode choice models based on the guidelines for feasibility studies do not consider a high-speed train with a higher speed than KTX. This limitation might result in inaccurate demand forecasting. In this research, a stated preference survey was conducted in order to supplement the problem by considering the characteristics of HEMU-430X. Based on the survey results, this research developed two mode choice models, including a multinomial logit model and a nested logit model. For this purpose, the utility functions of travel time and travel costs were estimated using a Limdep 8.0 NLOGIT 3.0 package. After comparing the two models, it was concluded that the nested logit model is appropriate. The paper suggested a plan to implement the nested logit model and presented a policy implication.

The development of a technique for the real-time sensing of a curve section is very important for active rolling-stocks in order to improve the curving performance. However, conventional methods using expensive track inspection equipment or various complex sensors are not practicable to be applied to commercial vehicles. Therefore, we have proposed a new method to estimate the curve radius of a curve section. This method uses the relative displacements occurring between the body and the bogie when the rolling-stock is running on a curve. To verify the validity of this method, we conducted a vehicle dynamics simulation and test using a real vehicle on a test line. The results confirmed the validity of the proposed method. We expect that this method will be effectively applied in studies of active rolling-stocks to increase the curving performance using active control technology.
Though the Platform Screen Door System (PSD) has received a positive evaluation and is installed in all the Urban Railroad platforms, PSD is not installed in the Intercity Railroad platforms. The limitation of PSD in the Intercity Railroad platforms is due to the fact that first, various types of trains such as KTX, Saemaeul, Mugunghwa, and Nuriro stop at the platforms and their locations of the doors are different and secondly, they are not operated under ATO (automatic train operation). RPSD system currently under research and development, on the other hand, is based on the improved door that slides up and down and can be installed in any Intercity Railroad platform regardless of the length of the train, the location of doors, and the number of doors. This study considers the mechanism of RPSD, develops a manual open/close algorithm, and evaluates the function of RPSD. The results show that the manual open/close algorithm achieves a significant improvement in efficiency when provided with power supply.

The obstacle deflector sweeps obstacles off the track or absorbs crash energy with an energy absorber to prevent derailment of a train and to minimize damage and casualties after an accident. In this study, an obstacle deflector and its operational mechanism were designed with a tension-type energy absorber and a 4-bar linkage system. Also, a test method was suggested and verified with FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and UTM (Universal Test Machine) for testing of the static load and energy absorbing ability according to EN 15227 regulations. Through this study, an obstacle deflector that meets the EN 15227 standard was designed and a test method was suggested to adjust the collapse load easily and to verify it experimentally according to the design and verification procedure of the obstacle deflector.
Gravel scattering that is generated during operation of high-speed railway vehicle is cause to damage of vehicle such as windows, axle protector and so on. Especially, those are frequently occurred in winter season when snow ice is generated easily. Above all, damage of vehicle windows has not only caused maintenance cost but also increased psychological anxiety of passengers. Various methods such as heating system using copper wire, heating jacket and heating air are applied to remove snow ice generated on the under-body of vehicle. However, the methods require much run-time and man power which can be low effectiveness of work. Therefore, this paper shows that large-area heating system was developed based on heating coat in order to fundamentally prevent snow ice damage on high-speed railway vehicle in the winter season. This system gives users high convenience because that can remotely control the heating system using IoT-based wireless communication. For evaluating the applicability to railroad sites, a field test on an actual high-speed railroad operation was conducted by applying these techniques to the brake cylinder of a high-speed railroad vehicle. From the results, it evaluated how input voltage and electric power per unit area of the heating specimen influences exothermic performance to draw the permit power condition for icing. In the future, if the system developed in the study is applied at the railroad site, it may be used as a technique for preventing all types of damages occurring due to snow ice in winter.

To achieve the safety and reliability, RAMS activity for a railway signal system of Near Surface Transit is studied. In this paper, preliminary hazard analysis in RAMS activities is studied for the railway signal system of Near Surface Transit. Preliminary hazard analysis is done through automatic train protection, automatic train operation and automatic train supervision. The hazards are defined, then causes and consequence for each hazard are defined. The total 75 preliminary hazards are classified. For high severity hazards are changed to acceptable level by upgrading of system requirement specification.
The study for ubiquitous computing infra is proceeding actively, it make possible to use service and access network anywhere, anytime because of wire/wireless communication technology and progress of hardware. Domestically, study for the network mobility support technology which is the key technology for future ubiquitous computing realization have progressed, but that is Insufficient. Especially, there is no study for independent mobility support study about railway wireless network. So, this study propose network mobility management technology for mobile network infra in railway and proper network model in train.

This study examined the concentration level of the major air pollutants in public transportation. The study was conducted between February 2009 and March 2008 at Suwon-Yeosu line in Korea. $PM_{10}$ concentration level was $100{\mu}g/m^3$ on average. The $PM_{2.5}$ to PM10 ratio in transport is 0.37, which was lower than the results published by other researches. The result also demonstrated that outdoor $PM_{10}$ concentration was about 56~60% level compared to that of the cabin. $CO_2$ concentration level in the cabin was 1,359ppm, which does not exceed 2,000ppm, which is the guideline concentration level according to the Ministry of Environment. $CO_2$ concentration level in the cabin was $CO_2=23.4{\times}N+460.2$, and about 23.4ppm in $CO_2$ concentration level increased every time one passenger was added on. The experiment conducted on the train demonstrated that the average $PM_{10}$ concentration level was $100{\mu}g/m^3$ in case of the reference cabin while average $PM_{10}$ concentration level of the modified vehicle was $68{\mu}g/m^3$. Likewise, effect of the particle reduction device for the reduction of $PM_{10}$ concentration level was approximately 21%. Meanwhile there was almost no difference in the concentration level between reference and modified cabin in case of $PM_{2.5}$. Using zeolite as an adsorbent was made to reduce the $CO_2$ concentration level in the cabin. Number of passengers was factored in, to calculate the effect of the adsorption device, which demonstrated that about 36% of $CO_2$ concentration level was reduced in the modified cabin effect of the $CO_2$ reduction device. This research analyzed the current status concerning the quality of air in the public transportation and technologies were developed that reduces major air pollutants.

R&D trend for Auxiliary Power Supply(APU) of electric vehicle can be well understood by analyzing patents at home and abroad. Based on this trend analysis, domestic technology development direction is proposed. To get technique trend, patents of Korea, Japan, Europe and America published until February of 2014 are analyzed by WIPS DB. First, power converter and transformer two big category are classified. Power converter can be classified into resonant DC to DC converter and resonant Half bridge inverter; transformer can be classified into high frequency transformer, ferrite transformer and matching transformer. By analyzing R&D trend of different counties, companies and years, specific technology needed to be developed and trend of technology can be accurately grasped.
The decisive criteria to determine collection performance is the contact force between pantograph and catenary. The contact force consists of a static force and dynamic force related to vibration characteristics, train speed and etc. The low contact force leads to the loss of contact, and most countries regulate it below 1% at operation speed. This study presents a technical overview of criteria for collection performance of catenary system.
