  • The manufacturing processes of the head hardened rails and the principles of the heat treatment for carbon steels are introduced in this paper, To get the good wear resistance of the rail, many kinds of microstructure had been developed for the rail head hardening. One of these is the tempered martensitic structure, which is very hard but brittle because of Quenching-Tempering Process. Another is the fine pearlitic structure by Slack Quenching. Now Banitic structure steels are emerging as a potential new material to replace eutectoid pearlitic steels for rail. The main reason of this change is due to the limitaion of pearlitic microstructure with regard to mechanical properties and wear resistances of railway rails.

  • A pilot production is made to the high carbon Cr-Ti alloy rail steels with slight quantity of Cr & Ti added to the eutectoid carbon steel. As a part of weldability of these alloy steels, SH-CCT diagram for welding is first applied to the high carbon Cr-ti alloy rail steel with 0.1wt% Ti. The microstructure, which will be appeared at the HAZ of Enclosed-arc welding of this alloy rail seel, is a single phase of pearlite. As a result of this, it shows that the welding condition of Enclosed-arc welding applied to this alloy rail steel is a good condition.

  • Continuously welded tracks, first introduced on train lines, are being used increasingly in Europe. And the different arc welding methods are only used on minor lines, private tracks and in the manufacturing of switches and crossings. Mobile flash butt welding belongs the future in rail welding on side if new tracks have to be erected. The following contribution reviews the processes available, usual test methods for welded rail joints and various applications.

  • In this paper, optimization for frontal crashworthiness is carried out for the weight reduction design of an auto-body member with the advanced high strength steels(AHSS) such as 780TRIP and 780DP. The frontal crashworthiness is evaluated in order to optimize thicknesses for the front rail member of the ULSAB-AVC, Thicknesses of the front rail member with AHSS are optimized by comparison of crushing distance, absorbed energy and the deceleration for the auto-body with the response surface methodology. The results demonstrate that the crashworhiness of the front rail member with the optimum thicknesses of the AHSS is similar to analysis results obtained from the ULSAB-AVC project. The results also show that the weight reduction design is performed by substituting the AHSS for conventional structural steels such as 440E in the auto-body members.

  • Contact fatigue damages on the rail surface, such as head checks and squats are a growing problem. The fatigue cracks forming on the contact surface grow according to load and lubricating conditions and may end up breaking the rail. Rail fracture can be avoided by preventing the cracks from reaching the critical length. Therefore, the crack growth rate needs to be estimated precisely according to the conditions of the track and load to develop a maintenance plan against rail damages. Therefore, it is important to understand the mechanism of cracks initiation and growth on a rail due to repetitive rolling contact. In this study, we have investigated the crack growth behavior on the rail surface by using the twin-disc tests and the finite element analysis.

  • Ratcheting is a cyclic accumulation of strain under a cyclic loading. It is a kind of mechanisms which generate cracks in rail steels. Though some experimental and numerical study has been performed, modeling of ratcheting is still a challenging problem. In this study, an elastic-plastic constitutive equation considering non-linear kinematic hardening and isotropic hardening was applied. Under the tangential stress of the contact stresses, a cyclic stress-strain relation was obtained by using the model. Strain under repeated cycles was accumulated.

  • In this study, springback amounts of an S-rail are quantitatively compared according to the hardening model using a finite element simulation for the stamping process with high strength steels. For comparison of the hardening models, two types of hardening models were investigated. The two models were isotropic hardening and kinematic hardening. For the analysis with kinematic hardening, the Yoshida-Uemori model was selected. Five kinds of springback modes were measured at designated sections and a comparison was made between the experiment and the analyses with two types of hardening models. The analysis results show that the springback in the flange and the wall curl are predicted more accurately with a kinematic hardening model.

  • This paper aims to evaluate quantitatively the springback characteristics that evolve in the sheet metal forming of an S-rail in order to understand the reasons of shape inaccuracy and to find a remedy. The geometrical springback is classified into six modes: angle change of punch and die shoulders, wall curl, ridge curl, section twist, and axial twist. The measuring method for each springback mode is suggested and quantitative measurements were made to determine the tendency towards shape accuracy. Forming experiments were conducted with four types of steel sheets that have different tensile strengths, which were 340MPa, 440MPa, 590MPa and 780MPa, in order to evaluate the effect of the tensile strength and the bead shape on the springback behavior. Springback tendencies show that they are greatly affected by the tensile strength of the sheet and the shape of the tools. Almost all springback modes except the section twist and the axial twist show a linearly increasing trend as the tensile strength of the sheet increases. The results can be used as basic data for design and for compensation of the press die geometry when forming high strength steels which exhibit large amounts of springback.

  • Rolling-sliding, cyclic contact of wheel and rail progressively alters the microstructure of the contacting steels, eventually leading to micro-scale crack initiation, wear and macro-scale crack growth in the railhead. Relating the microstructural changes to subsequent wear and cracking is being accomplished through modelling at three spatial scales: (i) bulk material (ii) multi-grain and (iii) sub-grain. The models incorporate detailed information from metallurgical examinations of used rails and tested rail material. The initial 2-dimensional models representing the rail material are being further developed into 3-dimensional models. Modelling is taking account of thermal effects, and traffic patterns to which the rails are exposed.
