  • The three medicinal herbs, Astragali Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix and Aurantii nobilis Pericarpium, irradiated with γ-rays have been tested for their possible genotoxicity. The hot water extracts of the 10 kGy γ-ray irradiated herbs were examined in the Salmonella mutagenicity test(histidine reversion assay; Ames test) using Salmonella. typhimurium TA98 and TA100 as tester strains. No mutagenicity was detected in this assay both with and without metabolic activation. The safety of the herbs irradiated with γ-rays at tactical doses needs to be evaluated in further tests of genotoxicity in vivo and chronic and reproductive toxicity.

  • Objective : We investigate toxicity of Aconiti ciliare tuber and antioxidant activity of Aconiti ciliare tuber Pharmacopuncture to develop safe Aconiti ciliare tuber Pharmacopuncture and find out the effect. Methods : In order to investigate toxicity of Aconiti ciliare tuberm, we administered Aconiti ciliare tuberm orally to rats and examined the survival rate, comparing with the survival rate of rats administered by Radix aconitum simmered with Semen Glycine and Radix Glycyrrhizae. We examined the in vitro biological activity of Aconiti ciliare tuber Pharmacopuncture, including the total polyphenol content, and ABTS radical scavenging. Results and Conclusions : The $LD_{50}$ of Radix aconitum simmered with Semen Glycine and Radix Glycyrrhizae was 9.0g/kg, on the other hand, the $LD_{50}$ of Aconiti ciliare tuberm was more than 15g/kg. The total polyphenol contents of Aconiti ciliare tuberm Pharmacopuncture was 2.31mg/L. The 2,2'-azinobis-3-ehtlbezothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid radical decolorization (ABTS) was 10.26%. We conclude that Aconiti ciliare tuberm is not highly toxic, Aconiti ciliare tuber Pharmacopuncture has a little antioxidant effect.

Results and Conclusion : The name of the prescription is unified into "Huangqintang", and its composition ratio between Scutellariae Radix, Paeonia lactiflora, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, and Zizyphi Fructus is 3:2:2:3. Huangqintang is used for enteritis diseases due to its antipyretic and antinflammatory effects. Its medical application was relatied with 'A'code, 'C'code, and 'K'code as indicated by KCD. By standardizing the mixed conceptions of Huangqintang, this review will facilitate the coding of Huangqintang prescription. Therefore, it will make Huangqintang prescription more useful in clinics.

  • Ssangwhatang which has been known to have antipyretic, analgesic and antifatigue effects are composed of Paeoniae Radix, Angelicae gigantis Radix, Astragali Radix, Rehmaniae Radix, Cnidii Rhizoma, Cassiae Cortex, Glycyrrhizae Radix and Puerariae Radix. Effects of some formulations of Ssangwhatang were studied with respect to the analgesic, antipyretic, hypothermic, anticonvulsive and antiinflammatory actions in experimental animals. The results obtained were as follows: 1) Prescription A, B, C and D of Ssangwhatang were showed significant analgesic effect by the acetic acid stimulating method in mice. 2) All Ssangwhatang-prescriptions used in this studies had hypothermic effect in normal mice. 3) Significant antipyretic effect in febrile rabbits were recognized in prescription A and C of Ssangwhatang, while not in prescription B and D of Ssangwhatang. 4) Prescription A, B, C and D of Ssangwhatang showed marked antiinflammatory effect against the edema induced by carrageenin in rats. 5) Prescriptions of Ssangwhatang did not show significant anticonvulsive effect against the convulsion induced by picrotoxin and strychnine in mice. From the above results, analgesic, hypothermic, antipyretic and antiinflammatory effects were recognized in Ssangwhatang. Ssangwhatang A- and C- prescriptions added with Pueraiae Radix showed better effects than prescription B and C of Ssangwhatang.
