The properties and mechanism of silicon protuberance and groove processing by diamond tip sliding using atomic force microscope (AFM) in atmosphere were studied. To control the height of protuberance and the depth of groove, the processed height and depth depended on load and diamond tip radius were evaluated. Nanoprotuberances and grooves were fabricated on a silicon surface by approximately 100-nm-radius diamond tip sliding using an atomic force microscope in atmosphere. To clarify the mechanical and chemical properties of these parts processed, changes in the protuberance and groove profiles due to additional diamond tip sliding and potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution etching were evaluated. Processed protuberances were negligibly removed, and processed grooves were easily removed by additional diamond tip sliding. The KOH solution selectively etched the unprocessed silicon area. while the protuberances, grooves and flat surfaces processed by diamond tip sliding were negligibly etched. Three-dimensional nanofabrication is performed in this study by utilizing these mechanic-chemically processed parts as protective etching mask for KOH solution etching.
For the life prediction and fatigue failure prevention of the constant velocity joint, the maximum equivalent stress and its location in depth from the contact area are essential. These values give the fundamental information to determine the depth of the surface hardening treatment at the contact area. Contact stresses are evaluated at the surface and subsurface of the ball groove of the Weiss type constant velocity joint. The maximum contact pressure and the maximum equivalent stress are obtained. The effects of various parameters such as the radius of ball groove, friction coefficient, and residual stress are studied. The maximum equivalent stress and the maximum contact pressure increase as the radius of the ball grove increases. The location of the maximum equivalent stress moves toward surface as the friction coefficient increases. It was also found that the maximum equivalent stress becomes minimum when the compressire residual stress is about 0.16 times of the maximum contact pressure.

Among various methods to manufacture the PDP barrier ribs, the pressing and the roll forming methods are simple and economical because they form the ribs by utilizing the plastic flow of the green tape in a relatively short time without generating air-polluting dusts. In the present study, the roll forming method was investigated by experiments as well as numerical analyses and in result the groove roll and the preform were designed. The effect of draft angle, corner radius, and initial thickness of the green tape on the plastic flow was examined by a series of parametric studies. The preform was recommended to ease the plastic flow into the grooves and to avoid the occurrence of cracks during rolling and sintering processes.
This study analyzed performance changes by an inner flow path of impeller groove for side channel type ring blower using CFD. Two models have the same side channel and clearance while one has an inner flow path and the other doesn't. To analyze the performance change of a ring blower, overall performance and local flow field were analyzed. For the overall performance, pressure increase and impeller torque were checked under the design flow condition. Under the design flow condition, pressure increase was greater for the model with the inner flow path. The model with the inner flow path showed improved efficiency because the area subject to torque decreased due to the creation of inner flow path. To analyze local flow field, a section was created from the representative location of each impeller groove toward the direction of radius. Inner channel pressure distribution depending on the rotation direction shows that the model with the inner flow path has pressure equilibrium of working fluid through the inner flow path. Velocity distribution of inside impeller groove shows that flow field was coupled and appeared to form an inner wall where the flow field was stabilized.

This research numerically analyzes the dynamic characteristics of a coupled journal and thrust hydrodynamic bearing due to its groove location which has the static load due to the weight of a rotor in the axial direction and the dynamic load due to its mass unbalance in the radial direction. The Reynolds equation is transformed to solve a plain member rotating type of journal bearing(PMRJ), a grooved member rotating type of journal bearing (GMRJ), a plain member rotating type of thrust bearing (PMRT) and a grooved member rotating type of thrust bearing (GMRT). FEM is used to solve the Reynolds equations in order to calculate the pressure distribution in a fluid film. Reaction forces and friction torque are obtained by integrating the pressure and shear stress along the fluid film, respectively. Dynamic behaviors, such as whirl radius or floating height of a rotor, are determined by solving its nonlinear equations of motion with the Runge-Kutta method. This research shows that the groove location affects the pressure distribution in the fluid film and consequently the dynamic performance of a HDD spindle system.
A reliable analytic model that predicts the surface profile of the exit cross section of workpiece in round-oval (or oval-round) pass sequence is established. The presented model does not require any plasticity theory but needs the only geometric information on workpiece and roll groove. Formulation is based on the linear interpolation of the radius of curvature of an incoming workpiece and that of roll groove in the roll axis direction when the maximum spread of workpiece is known beforehand. The validity of the analytic model is examined by hot rod rolling experiment with the roll gap, specimen size, design parameter of oval groove and steel grade changed. Results revealed that the cross sectional shapes predicted by the model were in good agreement with those obtained experimentally. We found that the analytic model not only has simplicity and accuracy for practical usage but also saves a large amount of computational time in comparison with finite element method.

The factors to influence the travelling distance of sprayed particles for the medium range nozzle may by the groove depth of swirl plate, the cap slope, the diameter of cap hole, and pressure. 1. This study was conducted to examine Interaction effects among four factors to the travelling distance. The results of this study are summarized as followa; a) Interaction effects among four factors the groove depth(G), cap slope(C), diameter of cap hole(D), and pressure (P), were significant to influence the travelling distance except for $G{\times}P,\;C{\times}D{\times}P\;and\;G{\times}C{\times}D{\times}P$. b) Interaction effects with the pressure were very smaller than interaction effects among the other factors. c) Effect of change of the groove depth of swirl plate on the travelling distance of sprayed particles was generally a linear, the increasing rate of the change was about 0.345, which was very significant. d) Effect of change of cap slope on the travelling distance was generally a linear or a dull quadratic, the increasing rate was very small. e) Main effect of change of cap slope in the medium range nozzle was very smaller than that of the close range nozzle on the travelling distance, which was estimated by the changing of turning radius of flowing course in nozzle. f) Interaction effect between two factors in the medium range nozzle was more significant than that of the close range nozzle on the travelling distance.
Burr and shape distortion are two main problems in micro-grooving. In this study, a simplified model is proposed based on large thrust force due to the tool edge radius. Experiments are conducted with a single crystal diamond tool on a 3-axis snaper-like machine varying the depth of cuts, and groove angles on brass, aluminum and OFHC. Experiments have shown that the thrust force becomes a dominant variable in burr generation compared to the principal force when the depth of cut is less than 2${\mu}m$. And fewer burrs develop on more brittle materials. Shape distortion is significant only when the groove angle is small and the depth of cut is larger than 30 ${\mu}m$.

The austenitic STS 304 stainless steel was turned to clarify the effects of tool geometry on the tool wear. The wear of TiN-TiCN-TiC-TiAlN coated tungsten carbide tool was the smallest, exhibiting larger wear in the order of Si-Al-O-N ceramic, TiN coated tungsten carbide, TiN-TiCN-TiN coated tungsten carbide, TiC-TiN cermet and M20 tungsten carbide tools at the same cutting conditions. The S-type tool of M20 with large approach angle showed the longest tool life of all tools used in this tests due to preventing the groove wear of the side cutting edge. The wear of the S-type tool with the rake angle of 15$^{\circ}$became smaller than with that of -5$^{\circ}$, but the tool with the nose radius of 0.8mm did not perform much better with increasing the rake angle.
