The performance of wind profilers were evaluated in Bukgangneung and Changwon, where both wind profilers and radiosonde are being operated. From December 2019 to November 2020, the acquisition rate of wind speed data by altitude and month was investigated and compared with the wind speed of radiosonde. The acquisition rate of normal data increased at the minimal observable altitude, and then decreased again from 2 km or more at the two observation sites. The acquisition rate was high in summer (June, July, August), and low in winter (December, January, February). The results compared with radiosonde showed high correlation of 0.9 in the high mode and 0.8 in the low mode.

As the retrieval accuracy of PWV estimates from GPS measurements is proportional to the accuracy of water vapor WMT, the WMT model is a significant formulation in the conversion of PWV from the GPS ZWD. The purpose of this study is to develop a MWMT model for the retrieval of highly accurate GPS PWV using the radiosonde measurements from six upper-air observing stations in the region of Korea. The values of 1-hr PWV estimated at four GPS stations during one year are used to evaluate the validity of the MWMT model. It is compared to the PWV obtained from radiosonde data that are located in the vicinity of GPS stations. Intercomparison of radiosonde PWVs and GPS PWVs derived using different WMT models is performed to assess the quality of our MWMT model for Korea. The result in this study indicates that the MWMT model is an effective model to retrieve the enhanced accurate GPS PWV, compared to other GPS PWV derived by Korean annual or global WMT models.

The performance assessment in radiosonde observation on the special observation program (ProbeX-2009) is performed and the characteristics of precipitation using Auto Weather System (AWS) and radiosonde data in 2009 at the Ulleungdo are investigated. The launching time, observation time, and maximum altitude of radiosonde are satisfied with the regulation from Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and World Meteorological Organization (WMO) but the duration of observational time of radiosonde is much shorter than that of the ProbeX-2007 because the altitude of launching site is higher than others in 2007. From the analysis of trajectories of radiosonde, most radiosondes at the Ulleungdo tend to move into the east because the westerly prevail at the middle latitude. However, when the Okhotsk high is expanded to the Korean peninsula and the north-westerly winds strengthen over the East Sea as the subtropical high is retreated, radiosonde tends to move into the south-west and south-east, respectively. Maximum distance appears at the end of observation level before May but the level of maximum distance is changed into 100 hPa after June because the prevailing wind direction is reversed from westerly to easterly at the stratosphere during summer time. The condition of precipitation was more correlated with the dynamic instability except Changma season. Precipitation in 2009 at the Ulleungdo occurred under the marine climate so that total precipitation amounts and precipitation intensity were increased and intensified during nighttime. The local environment favorable for the precipitation during nighttime was while the wind speed at the surface and the inflow from the shoreline were strengthened. Precipitation events also affected by synoptic condition but the localized effect induced by topography was more strengthened at the northern part of Ulleungdo.

The performance of up-to-date mapping functions and various mean temperature equations were analyzed to derive optimal mapping function and mean temperature equation when GNSS precipitable water vapor (PWV) was investigated in the Korean Peninsula. Bernese GNSS Software 5.2, which can perform high precision GNSS data processing, was used for accurate analysis, and zenith total delay (ZTD) required to calculate PWV was estimated via the Precise Point Positioning (PPP) method. GNSS, radiosonde, and meteorological data from 2009 to 2014 were acquired from Sokcho Observatory and used. ZTDs estimated by applying the global mapping function (GMF) and Vienna mapping function 1 (VMF1) were compared with each other in order to evaluate the performance of the mapping functions. To assess the performance of mean temperature equations, GNSS PWV was calculated by using six mean temperature equations and a difference with radiosonde PWV was investigated. Conclusively, accuracy of data processing was improved more when using VMF1 than using GMF. A mean temperature equation proposed by Wu (2003) had the smallest difference with that in the radiosonde in the analysis including all seasons. In summer, a mean temperature equation proposed by Song & Grejner-Brzezinska (2009) had the closest results with that of radiosonde. In winter, a mean temperature equation proposed by Song (2009) showed the closest results with that of radiosonde.
Radiosonde is an observation equipment that measures pressure (geopotential height), temperature, relative humidity and wind by being launched up from the ground. Radiosonde data which serves as an important element of weather forecast and research often causes a bias in a model output due to accuracy and sensitivity between the different manufacturers. Although Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA) and several institutes have conducted routine and intensive radiosonde observations, very few studies have been done before on the characteristics of radiosonde performance. Analyzing radiosonde observation data without proper understanding of the unique nature of those sensors may lead to a significant bias in the analysis of results. To evaluate performance and reliability of radiosonde, we analyzed the differences between two sensors made by the different manufacturers, which have been used in the campaign of Experiment on Snow Storm At Yeongdong (ESSAY). We improved a couple of methods to launch the balloon being attached with the sensors. Further we examined cloud-layer impacts on temperature and humidity differences for the analysis of both sensors' performance among various weather conditions, and also compared daytime and nighttime profiles to understand temporal dependence of meteorological sensors. The overall results showed that there are small but consistent biases in both temperature and humidity between different manufactured sensors, which could eventually secure reliable precisions of both sensors, irrespective of accuracy. This study would contribute to an improved sounding of atmospheric vertical states through development and improvement of the meteorological sensors.
To improve the predictability of high-impact weather phenomena around Seoul, where a larger number of people are densely populated, KMA conducted the intensive observation from 22 June to 20 September in 2020 over the Seoul area. During the intensive observation period (IOP), the dropsonde from NIMS Atmospheric Research Aircraft (NARA) and the radiosonde from KMA research vessel Gisang1 were observed in the Yellow Sea, while, in the land, the radiosonde observation data were collected from Icheon and Incheon. Therefore, in this study, the effects of radiosonde and dropsonde data during the IOP were investigated by Observing System Experiment (OSE) based on Korean Integrated Model (KIM). We conducted two experiments: CTL assimilated the operational fifteen kinds of observations, and EXP assimilated not only operational observation data but also intensive observation data. Verifications over the Korean Peninsula area of two experiments were performed against analysis and observation data. The results showed that the predictability of short-range forecast (1~2 day) was improved for geopotential height at middle level and temperature at lower level. In three precipitation cases, EXP improved the distribution of precipitation against CTL. In typhoon cases, the predictability of EXP for typhoon track was better than CTL, although both experiments simulated weaker intensity as compared with the observed data.

This study is based on the data of velocity actually measured at varied the heights in the last 3 years. As mentioned in the World Meteorological Monitoring Plan(World Weather Watch: WWW), using the meteorological data by radiosonde can calculate the probability of velocity greater than 10m/s which is the standard beginning point of non-working condition by wind. The height is divided into sections, with 100m for each section starting from the ocean surface up to 700m high. The data measured at each section could be used for estimating and predicting the probability of non-working days for the construction nearby. For example, the data of Osan region is expected to be applicable for the project located in Seoul which has similar geographical conditions. As comparing the velocity varied with height, non-working days calculated basing on the measured data shows a variation of from -0.3 to +64 days. However, this study use Weibull distribution which considered more reliable, the result is expected to be more useful, as the data was all actually measured in the real conditions.
When pseudolite navigation system is applied to wide area, the tropospheric delay is the main error factor. In this study, we experimentally compared and analyzed the performance of the conventional pseudolite tropospheric delay models. The integration method using radiosonde meteorological data was suggested to derive the reference value for the comparison and analysis. Flight tests were carried out to analyze the performance of the tropospheric delay models according to the elevation angle and distance conditions between the user receiver and the pseudolite. As the results of this study, we provided the basis for the choice of tropospheric delay model appropriate to the relative location characteristics of the pseudolite and the user.
Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has operationally produced Atmospheric Motion Vector (AMV) from the consecutive MTSAT-1R satellite image dataset. Comparing with radiosonde data, our current AMV scheme shows more than 10 m/s RMSE. Therefore we need to improve continuously its accuracy. Many AMV producers have stated that the bad performance of the Height Assignment (HA) algorithm is the main reason of degrading the accuracy of AMV. The uncertainties in AMV HA can occur in the algorithm itself, used NWP profiles, and the performance of Radiative Transfer Model (RTM) etc. This study introduces currently operated AMV HA schemes and the impacts of NWP profile data and RTM that these schemes use were investigated. Finally we analyzed the relationship between vectors by vector tracking and heights assigned to each vector by using collocated wind profile dataset with radiosonde data. This study is a preliminary work to improve the accuracy of AMV by removing or decreasing the uncertainties in AMV estimation.

As the GPS signals propagate from the GPS satellites to the receivers on the ground, they are delayed by the atmosphere. The tropospheric delay consists of two components. The hydrostatic (or "dry") component that is dependent on the dry air gasses in the atmosphere and accounts for approximately 90% of the delay. And the "wet" component that depends on the moisture content of the atmosphere and accounts for the remaining effect of the delay. The Zenith Hydrostatic Delay (ZHD) can be calculated from the local surface pressure. The Total Zenith Delay (TZD) will be estimated and the wet component extracted later. Integrated water Vapor (IWV) gives the total amount of water vapor that a signal from the zenith direction would encounter. Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) is the IWV scaled by the density of water. The quality of this PWV has been verified by comparison with radiosonde data(at Osan). We processed data for JULY 2 and JULY 14, 1999 from four stations(Cheju, Kwangju, Suwon, Daegu). We found the coincidence between PWV of the estimations using GPS and PWV of pressing the radiosonde data. The average of the difference between PWV using GPS and PWV using radiosonde was 3.77 mm(Std. = $\pm$0.013 mm) and 2.70 mm(Std. = $\pm$0.0011 mm) at Suwon & Kwangju.
