  • Bowel and rectal diseases are on the increase by irregular life and westernized eating habits of modern people, especially rectal cancer, which accounts for 50% of the entire colon cancer. For the initial rectal cancer, because there is no portion projecting on the surface, if not see inside the tissue with ultrasound, you make an errors that misdiagnosis as rectal abscess. However there is a need for more accurate diagnosis, because it is sometimes difficult to distinguish abscess from rectal cancer depending on staging, in spite of the ultrasonic diagnosis. Therefore, this study was performed quantitative analysis by using a computer algorithm for rectal cancer and abscess image. Each of 20 cases about normal, abscess and cancer by setting analysis region ($50{\times}50$ pixels) applies to GLCM algorithm and Autocorrelation, Max probability, Sum average, Sum variance in each image were analyzed by comparing the 4 single parameter. Consequently, The high lesion detection efficiency was presented 100% by the 3 parameter of Autocorrelation, Max probability, Sum variance and the parameter of Sum average presents 95% in cancer, more than 90% in abscess. Those parameters are valuable in distinction standard about normal, cancer and abscess in rectum. It is sufficient availability as a computer assisted diagnosis system depended on clinical using.

  • According to the increase in the use of radiotherapy to cancer patients, many approaches have been tried to develop new agents for the protection of surrounding normal tissues. However, it is still few applied in the clinic as a radioprotector. We aim to find a representative parameter for radioprotection to easily predict the activity of in vivo experiment from the results of in vitro screening. The polysaccharide extracted from Panax ginseng was used in this study because the immunostimulator has been regarded as one of the radioprotective agent category and was already reported having a promising radioprotective activity through the increase of hematopoietic cells and the production of several cytokines. Mitogenic activity, AK cells activity and nitric oxide production were monitored for the in vitro immunological assay, and endogenous colony-forming unit (e-CFU) was measured as in vivo radioprotective parameter. The immunological activity was increased by the galactose contents of ginseng polysaccharide dependently. The result of this study suggests that mitogenic activity of splenocytes demonstrated a good correlation with in vivo radioprotective effect, and may be used as a representative parameter to screen the candidates for radioprotector.

  • Background: Not only regulatory framework including radiation protection quantities and regulatory standards, but also methodology for regulatory compliance may be different in each country due to inherent philosophy for radiation protection. Materials and Methods: Based on the Korean regulatory models, off-site radiological dose resulting from the routine releases of gaseous radioactive effluents was calculated by applying the parameter values and assumptions recommended in the Korean and Japanese regulations. Results and Discussion: Effective dose for adult based on the Korean recommendation were 17.5 and 1.6 times higher than those of Japanese recommendation for 131I and 133I, respectively, for the same atmosphere dispersion and ground deposition factors. Conclusion: It was due to different parameter values and assumptions recommended for the purpose of evaluating compliance with dose criteria for the radiation protection of the public in each country.

  • This study deals with the relationship between the magnitude of ultrasonic nonlinear parameter B/A, and sound speed of amount of fat present in biological media to measure B/A system using a wide band ultrasonic transducer. To represent this case, mixtures of egg whites and egg yolk were studied. Even though the differences in density and sound speed of the two egg components were in the range of 1%, B/A increase parabolically as a function of the fat density, which is not in agreement with the Yoshizumi et al's suggestion. In skim milk that does not contain fat, both the B/A and the sound speed increase with the solubility. It is considered that protein could affect these values.
