  • The A-KRS (Advanced Korean Reference Disposal System) is the disposal concept for pyroprocessed waste, which has been developed by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. In this disposal concept, the amount of high-level radioactive waste is minimized using pyrochemical process, called pyroprocessing. The produced pyroprocessed waste is then solidified in the form of monazite ceramic. The final product of ceramic wastes will be disposed of in a deep geological repository. By the way, the decay heat is generated due to the radioactive decay of fission products and raises the temperature of buffer materials in the near field of radioactive waste repository. However, the buffer temperature must be kept below $100^{\circ}C$ according to the safety regulation. Usually, the temperature can be controlled by variation of the canister interdistance. However, KAERI has modelled thermal analysis under the boundary condition, where the waste canisters are in direct contact with each other. Therefore, a reliable temperature analysis in the disposal system may fail because of unknown thermal resistence values caused by the spatial gap between waste canisters. In the present work, we have performed thermal analyses considering the gap between heating elements and canisters at the beginning of canister loading into the radioactive waste repository. All thermal analyses were performed using the COMSOL software package.

  • In this study, we investigated the main characteristics of off-gas generated from melting process and off-gas treatment system operation example to provide some primary data for commercial vitrification facility design. The purpose of vitrification facility operation is to treat hazardous materials in the radioactive wastes and harmful off-gas containing a variety of chemical species generated in the glass melting process. Constructing and operating vitrification facility essentially need to be licensed through safety analysis; it is very important to treat radionuclide and hazardous materials below the legal environment emissions regulation level. We must accurately understand the characteristics of off-gas and apply an appropriate off-gas treatment process accordingly. Thus, to design the appropriate off-gas treatment there must be a wide range of elements taken into account such as characteristics of waste and melter, regulation guidance of off-gas, characteristics of generated off-gas and off-gas treatment system performance assessment.

  • The IMEF(Irradiated Materials Examination Facility), located in KAERI site, is a hot cell facility to test and evaluate the irradiation defects or embrittlement through post-irradiation examination(PIEs) of irradiated nuclear fuels and structural materials which are come from HANARO research reactor and commercial nuclear power plants. Therefore, to carry out its own function, the high level solid radioactive wastes, produced through PIEs, are periodically carried out and managed from hot cell to monolith. So far, approximately 30 drums which contains 50 liters are transported to monolith, and it is shown that the quantity is slowly increasing, In this paper, the procedures and work contents of the high level solid radwaste carrying out and management for IMEF are described in detail.

  • Several types of gamma-ray sensors were constructed by packing different numbers of fibers into aluminum tubes, and tested to detect the $^137Cs$ gamma ray. It has been found from this investigation that tapered fibers can be more efficient to collect the lights produced inside the sensor and transfer them into the transmitting fiber in order to predict the functioning of the tapered fiber, tapered plastic scintillators, composed of polystyrene with minute amount of dPOPOP and PPO or dPBD, were fabricated and tested for the detection of gamma rays from 1.0 1.5 3.0 5.0 ${\mu}Ci$ $^137Cs$ sources, and the pulse hight spectrum and the relationship between the radioactivity and the total counts are analyzed. It has been found from this study that the tapered scintillating optical fiber, if manufactured, can be practically applied to the development of gamma-ray sensors which can be deployed In ${\mu}Ci$-level radiation fields

  • In this work, as a preliminary experimental works, which focuses on utilizing separated pastes from activated (or radioactive) concrete as solidifying agents for radioactive waste immobilization, were performed. It was found that density of hydrated cement paste, which was lower than that of ordinary portland cement, increased as temperature for heat treatment increased. Highest compressive strength was observed with the specimens that was heat treated at $600^{\circ}C$. However, heat treatment over $700^{\circ}C$ showed higher CaO content that caused higher heat of hydration after in contact with water, lows of workability, and lower strength. Based on experimental results, it is suggested that $600^{\circ}C$ heat treatment is more appropriate for waste cement paste to be used as a solidifying agent.

  • With Kori nuclear power plant unit 1 as a beginning in April 1978, 24 nuclear power plants have been operated in Korea and two more plants are under construction. As the nuclear power plants being operated, radioactive wastes from the plants have been accumulated so that various methods for disposing them have been proposed. In Korea, researches have been conducted, being focused on DGD (Deep Geological Disposal), however, DBD (Deep Borehole Disposal) method needs considering as an alternative. In this technical note, element technologies for DBD were analyzed by compiling previous researches and their applicability on domestic cases were investigated. Conceptual studies regarding relevant designs were conducted and finally, technical challenges for actual disposal were described.

  • Neutrons are generated by the nuclear reaction, which is absorbed into the concrete wall and causes the activation during cyclotron operation. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of neutron activation and radiative concrete on concrete type. This experiment used Monte Carlo simulation and RESRAD model. The results of the experiment showed that the higher the content of Fe in concrete, the greater the shielding rate. The effect of $^{56}Fe(n,\;2np)^{54}Mn$ reaction on workers is also increased. However, radioactive nuclides have low activity and have very low impact on workers. Radioactive concrete should be treated as general wastes with less than its self-disposal tolerance level, and it should be recycled to the surface such as road repair rather than landfill to minimize the effect of $^{14}C$.

  • Securing the radiological safety is a prerequisite for the safe management of the naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) which cannot be reused. This becomes a crucial focus of our R&D efforts upon the implementation of the Act on Protective Action Guidelines against Radiation in the Natural Environment. To secure the safety, the establishment of technical bases and procedures for securing radiological safety related to the disposal of NORM is required. Thus, it is necessary to analyze the characteristics, to collect the data, to have the radiological safety assessment methodologies and tools, to investigate disposal methods and facilities, and to study the effects of the input data on the safety for the NORM wastes. Here, we assess the environmental impact of the NORM waste disposal with respect to the major domestic and foreign NORM characteristics. The data associated with major industries are collected/analyzed and the status of disposal facilities and methodologies relevant to the NORM wastes is investigated. We also suggest the conceptual design concept of a landfill disposal facility and the management plan with respect to the major NORM wastes characteristics. The radionuclide pathways are identified for the atmospheric transport and leachate release and the environmental impact assessment methodology for the NORM waste disposal is established using a relevant code. The assessment and analysis on the exposure doses and excessive cancer risks for the NORM waste disposal are performed using the characteristics of the representative domestic NORM wastes including flying ash, phosphor gypsum, and redmud. The results show that the exposure dose and the excessive cancer risks are very low to consider any radiation effects. This study will contribute to development in the areas of the regulatory technology for securing radiological safety relevant to NORM waste disposal and to the implementation technology for the Act.

  • High level radioactive wastes, such as spent fuels generated from nuclear power plant, will be disposed in a deep geological repository. To maintain the integrity of the disposal canister and to carry out the process effectively, the emplacement process for the canister system in borehole of disposal tunnel should be well defined. In this study, the concept of the disposal canister emplacement process for deep geological disposal was established. To do this, the spent fuel arisings and disposal rate were reviewed. Also, not only design requirements, such canister and disposal depth but also preliminary repository layout concept were reviewed. Based on the requirements and the other bases, the canister emplacement process in the borehole of the disposal tunnel was established. The established concept of the disposal canister emplacement process will be improved continuously with the future studies. And this concept can be effectively used in implementing the reference repository system of our own case.
