ADEOS(Advanced Earth Observing Satellite)/IMG(Interferometric Monitor for Greenhouse Gases) measurements - temperature, water vapor($H_2O$), ozone($O_3$) have been compared with the radio sonde and ozone sonde observations at Osan and Pohang stations for the 4 cases on 10 Jan.(a), 28 Jan.(b), 2 Apr.(c), and 19 Jun.(d) 1997 to detect the error ranges of the IMG data. It showed that the IMG data of the cases (b), (d) when the ADEOS passed over the central part of Korea were quite stable with the good agreement with the sonde observations, however, that of (a),(c) when the ADEOS passed over south- east coastal area were unstable with the larger differences from the sonde-observations. The RMSE and bias analyses of temperature for the stable cases (b),(d) showed that the differences between the IMG data and the sonde observations were about 1~4 K at the 700~300 hPa level and about 4~5 K or more at the higher level, and the IMG measurements tended to be larger than the sonde observations at the higher level above 200 hPa, while no typical bias was seen at the lower level. The RMSE and bias analysis for the version of level 2 5_6_4_4 of ozone showed that the RMSE of ozone were quite small, in general, except at the higher level above 50~60 hPa in the all 4 cases, however the bias was generally big with the positive value in the troposphere and the negative in the stratosphere. An example of vertical profile of trace gases such as $CO_2, N_2O, CH_4, HNO_3$, CO measured by IMG was also presented and it showed that the IMG data had large differences between the 5 different observation points.

GPS/Meteorology technique for PWV monitoring is currently actively being researched an advanced nation. But, there is no detailed research on an evaluation of precision of GPS derived PWV measurements during the period of foul weather condition. Here, we deal with the precision of GPS derived PWV during the passage of Typhoon RUSA. Typhoon RUSA which caused a series damage was passed over in Korea from August 30 to September 1, 2002. We compared th tropospheric wet delay estimated from GPS observation and radio-sonde data at four sites(Suwon, Kwangju, Taegu, Cheju). The mean standard deviation of PWV differences at each site is ${\pm}$0.005mm. We also obtained GPS PWV at 13 GPS permanent stations(Seoul, Wonju, Seosan, Sangju, Junju, Cheongju, Taegu, Wuljin, Jinju, Daejeon, Mokpo, Sokcho, Jeju). GPS PWV time series shows, in general, peak value before and during th passage of RUSA, and low after the RUSA. GPS PWV peak time at each station is related to the progress of a typhoon RUSA. We obtained very similar result as we compare GMS satellite image with tomograph using GPS PWV and we could present th possibility of practical use by numerical model for weather forecast.

In order to investigate of possibility for developing urban wind power, wind profile and wind power density are estimated using Sodar and Lidar based on surface. Since poor performance of Sodar and Lidar are often shown in a paticular meteorological condition, inter-comparison and validation with radio-sonde for each of instruments are performed. As a result, Lidar shows a good performance and wind data from Lidar are used to analyze wind profile and wind power density. It can be found that a wind power system mounted tall building in urban area is very attractive.
It is very important to measure atmospheric particles and evaluate the characteristics of them since aerosol can influence atmospheric environment, climate, and health. Satellite, aircraft, radio sonde are usually used to measure the vertical distribution of particle properties, temperature, humidity, and pressure. Although the method of using an aircraft is favorable to collect the horizontal distribution of the particles, but unadaptable to measure the vertical distribution of the particles. However, all-in-one balloon particle sampler system can collect particles depending on each altitude controling the balloon by winch. In this research, we performed the air sampling on the TEM grids using house made light weight impactor at the altitude of 300m and 900m. The collected particles were analyzed using TEM/EDS.
To evaluate high-resolution wind resources for local and coastal area with complex terrain was attemped to combine the prognostic MM5 mesoscale model with CALMET diagnostic modeling this study. Firstly, MM5 was simulated for 1km resolution, nested fine domain, with FDDA using QuikSCAT seawinds data was employed to improve initial meteorological fields. Wind field and other meteorological variables from MM5 with all vertical levels used as initial guess field for CALMET. And 5 surface and 1 radio sonde observation data is performed objective analysis whole domain cells. Initial and boundary condition are given by 3 hourly RDAPS data of KMA in prognostic MM5 simulation. Geophysical data was used high-resolution terrain elevation and land cover(30 seconds) data from USGS with MM5 simulation. On the other hand SRTM 90m resolution and EGIS 30m landuse was adopted for CALMET diagnostic simulation. The simulation was performed on whole year for 2007. Vertical wind field a hour from CALMET and latest results of MM5 simulation was comparison with wind profiler(KEOP-2007 campaign) data at HAENAM site.
Aircraft observations constitute one of the major sources of temperature observations which provide three-dimensional information. But it is well known that the aircraft temperature data have warm bias against sonde observation data, and therefore, the correction of aircraft temperature bias is important to improve the model performance. In this study, the algorithm of the bias correction modified from operational KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) global model is adopted in the preprocessing of aircraft observations, and the effect of the bias correction of aircraft temperature is investigated by conducting the two experiments. The assimilation with the bias correction showed better consistency in the analysis-forecast cycle in terms of the differences between observations (radiosonde and GPSRO (Global Positioning System Radio Occultation)) and 6h forecast. This resulted in an improved forecasting skill level of the mid-level temperature and geopotential height in terms of the root-mean-square error. It was noted that the benefits of the correction of aircraft temperature bias was the upper-level temperature in the midlatitudes, and this affected various parameters (winds, geopotential height) via the model dynamics.

Understanding limitation of simulation for Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) height in mesoscale meteorological model is important for accurate meteorological variable and diffusion of air pollution. This study examined the accuracy for simulated PBL heights using two different PBL schemes (MYJ, YSU) in Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model during the radiosonde observation period. The simulated PBL height were verified using atmospheric sounding data obtained from radiosonde observations that were conducted during 5 months from August to December 2014 over the Gumi weir in Nakdong river. Four Dimensional Data Assimilation (FDDA) using radiosonde observation data were conducted to reduce error of PBL height in WRF model. The assessment result of PBL height showed that RMSE with YSU scheme were lower than that with MYJ scheme in the day and night time, respectively. Especially, the WRF model with YSU scheme produced lower PBL height than with the MYJ scheme during night time. The YSU scheme showed lower RMSE than the MYJ scheme on sunny, cloudy and rainy day, too. The experiment result of FDDA showed that PBL height error were reduced by FDDA and PBL height at the nudging coefficient of $3.0{\times}10^{-1}$ (YSU_FDDA_2) were similar to observation compared to the nudging coefficient of $3.0{\times}10^{-4}$ (YSU_FDDA_1).
Using the FSSP-100(FSSP) and Microwave Radiometer (MWR), the fog and clear day characteristics (the size and number concentration of fog particles and the liquid water content) have been measured and analyzed at Daegwallyoung observation site ($37^{\circ}41^{\prime}N$, $128^{\circ}45^{\prime}E$) during 27 - 30 November 2003 (fog day) and 19 January 2004 (clear day). During the fog days, the measured fog-particle size by using FSSP is 0.8~8.4 ${\mu}m$, which is similar to the WMO typical value, the fog number concentration varies from 121 to 200 count ($No./cm^2$) and the fog liquid water content from $0.018g/m^3-0.1g/m^3$ in the site. The precipitable water vapor obtained by the MWR, showing the correlation coefficient $R^2$=0.83 between the total precipitable water vapor obtained from the radio sonde and MWR, shows the larger amount (0.75-8.3 cm) during the fog days than the clear-sky data (0.2 cm).

Precise analysis of local winds for the prediction of atmospheric phenomena in the planetary boundary layer is extremely important. In this study, wind profiler data with fine time resolution and density in the lower troposphere were used to improve the performance of a numerical atmospheric model of a complex coastal area. Three-dimensional variational data assimilation (3DVAR) was used to assimilate profiler data. Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of the profiler data on model results. First, we performed an observing system experiment. Second, we implemented a sensitivity test of data assimilation intervals to extend the advantages of the profiler to data assimilation. The lowest errors were observed when using both radio sonde and profiler data to interpret vertical and surface observation data. The sensitivity to the assimilation interval differed according to the synoptic conditions when the focus was on the surface results. The sensitivity to the weak synoptic effect was much larger than to the strong synoptic effect. The hourly-assimilated case showed the lowest root mean square error (RMSE, 1.62 m/s) and highest index of agreement (IOA, 0.82) under weak synoptic conditions, whereas the statistics in the 1, 3, and 6 hourly-assimilated cases were similar under strong synoptic conditions. This indicates that the profiler data better represent complex local circulation in the model with high time and vertical resolution, particularly when the synoptic effect is weak.
In the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, drones have become a flexible device that can be integrated with new technologies. The drones were originally developed as military unmanned aircraft and are now being used in various fields. In the environment and weather observation area, the atmospheric boundary layer is near the surface where the atmosphere is the most active in the meteorological phenomenon and has a close influence on human activities. In order to carry out the study of these atmospheric boundary layers, it is necessary to observe precisely the lower atmosphere and secure the observation technology. The drones in the meteorological field can be used for meteorological observations at a relatively low maintenance cost compared to existing equipment. When used in conjunction with various sensors, the drones can be widely used in atmospheric boundary layer and local meteorological studies. In this study, the possibility of meteorological observations using drones was confirmed by conducting vertical meteorological (temperature and humidity) observation experiments equipped with a combined meteorological sensor and a radio sonde on drones owned by NIMS.
