  • The first Space-VLBI project, VSOP, started successfully with the launch of the dedicated space-VLBI satellite HALCA in 1997. The project has been in scientific operation in the 1.6 GHz and 5 GHz bands, and studies have been done mainly of the jet phenomena related to active galactic nuclei. A second generation space- VLBI project, VSOP-2, has been planned by the working group formed at ISAS/JAXA with many collaborators. The spacecraft is planned to observe in the 8, 22 and 43 GHz bands with cooled receivers for the two higher bands, and with a maximum angular resolution at 43 GHz (7 mm) of about 40 micro-arcseconds. The VSOP-2 satellite will also have the capability of the phase-reference and full polarization observations, which will produce more powerful results than those of the VSOP project. Far-future space-VLBI projects following VSOP and VSOP-2, have a large potential to achieve enough resolution and sensitivity to satisfy astronomers in future.

  • This paper reviews the requirements for far-infrared astronomy in the period following the SPICA satellite in the late 2020's. We take a very long view of the state of FIR astronomy and what facilities will be required in a twenty year timeframe. We show that spatial resolution to match that of observatories operating in the optical and mid-infrared and the radio will be a necessity. Moreover this high spatial resolution must be combined with high spectral and photometric sensitivity to provide the data required to further our understanding of planetary formation mechanisms, the history of star formation through cosmic time and the feedback between active galactic nuclei and their host galaxies in controlling star formation. We review three possible conceptual mission scenarios and comment on the possibility of realising them in the coming deades.

  • MOS (Metal-Oxide Semconductor) devices among the most sensistive of all semiconductors to radiation, in particular ionizing radiation, showing much change even after a relatively low dose. The necessity of a radiation dosimeter robust enough for the working environment has increased in the fields of aerospace, radio-therapy, atomic power plant facilities, and other places where radiation exists. The power MOSFET (Metal-Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor) has been tested for use as a gamma radiation dosimeter by measuring the variation of threshold voltage based on the quantity of dose, and a maximum total dose of 30 krad exposed to a $^{60}Co$ ${\gamma}$-radiation source, which is sensitive to environment parameters such as temperature. The gate oxide structures give the main influence on the changes in the electrical characteristics affected by irradiation. The variation of threshold voltage on the operating temperature has caused errors, and needs calibration. These effects can be overcome by adjusting gate oxide thickness and implanting impurity at the surface of well region in MOSFET.

  • Digital harmonics, which may reduce the radio frequency sensitivity of a system, can be coupled with an antenna in a mobile handset. This letter presents a decoupling method for increasing the isolation between digital harmonics on a flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) and an antenna in terms of the ground mode current and the concept of reaction. We model the signal and ground lines in an FPCB as a loop circuit exciting a ground mode current and demonstrate a simple but efficient decoupling method for reducing the excited ground mode current.

  • A fast scan digital-IF FFT receiver at the radio communication band is presented for spectrum monitoring applications. It is composed of three parts: RF front-end, fast LO board, and signal processing board. It has about 19GHz/s scan rate, multi frequency resolution from 10kHz to 2.5kHz, and high sensitivity of below -99dBm. The design and performance analysis of the digital-IF FFT receiver are presented.

  • This paper describes an application of the on line partial discharge measurement method in operating transformer. In the operating transformer, the partial discharge signal may be superimposed by radio intereference voltage(RIV) and pulse shaped noise signals generated by external corona. The partial discharge quantity showed about 3,800pC due to very high sinusoidal interferences at the measuring impedance terminal of the transformer bushing tap. In order to reject these noises, this paper applied RIV filter, band-pass filters and noise gating method. The resulting measuring sensitivity was improved from 3,800pC to 160pC.

  • Because of their high sensitivity and moderate bandwidth, superconducting receivers with SIS (Superconductor Insulator Superconductor) tunnel junction mixer are now widely used for millimeter wave radio astronomy. In this paper we have introduced how to determine the parameters of SIS tunnel junction which have to be optimized to achieve a good mixer performance. From these results of optimized junction parameters determined by this methods, SIS junctions which consist of a series array of four Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb junctions with each area 3.4${\mu}m^{2}$ have been fabricated by SNEP (Selective Niobium Etching Process) and RIE (Reactive Ion Eching). Also we have tested their DC current-voltage characteristics. These SIS junctions will be used as a mixer for 100GHz band cosmic waves receiver.

  • We Investigate dust stripping of Virgo cluster galaxies that are known to suffer HI gas stripping. The gas stripping phenomena of these galaxies may result from either ram pressure induced by the hot intracluster medium or gravitational tidal interactions between galaxies. While much efforts have been made to directly detect gas removed from cluster galaxies, the spatial distributions of dust, which should also be affected, are hardly known. Several previous studies have tried to directly detect the morphology of gas or dust using radio or infrared observations, but such approaches are hard to widely apply because of the limit of observational resolution and sensitivity. In this study, we try a different approach using optical data: measuring the background galaxy reddening by the dust stripped from the Virgo cluster members. Based on optical color excess maps of the background galaxies, we compare the ambient dust distribution with the HI morphology of the Virgo galaxies. We discuss how efficiently dust stripping can be detected with this method and how the stripped dust is associated with the removed gas according to HI gas stripping stage over the sample.

  • This paper describes an application of the partial discharge measuring method in operating transformer. In the operating transformer, the useful PD signal may be superimposed by radio intereference voltage and impulse shaped noise signals generated by external corona or power electronics. In this paper, initial investigations after connecting the PD measuring system to the terminals of the measuring impedance showed a very high noise level of 3,700pC due to sinusoidal interferences. In order to reject these noises, this paper applied RIV and band-pass filters and noise gating method. The resulting measuring sensitivity was improved from 3,700pC to 160pC.

  • The definite molecular mechanisms underlying the genesis of nasopharyngeal carcinomas (NPCs) remain to be completely elucidated. miRNAs are small non-coding RNAs which are implicated in cell proliferation, apoptosis, and even carcinogenesis through negatively regulating gene expression post-transcriptionally. EBV was the first human virus found to express miRNAs. EBV-encoded BART-miRNAs and dysregulated cellular miRNAs are involved in carcinogenesis of NPC by interfering in the expression of viral and host cell genes related to immune responses and perturbing signal pathways of proliferation, apoptosis, invasion, metastasis and even radio-chemo-therapy sensitivity. Additional studies on the roles of EBV-encoded miRNAs and cellular miRNAs will provide new insights concerning the complicated gene regulated network and shed light on novel strategies for the diagnosis, therapy and prognosis of NPC.
