The natural convection and combined heat transfer induced by fire in a rectangular enclosure is numerically studied. The model for this numerical analysis is partially opened right wall. The solution procedure includes the standard k-$\varepsilon$ model for turbulent flow and the discrete ordinates method (DOM) is used for the calculation of radiative heat transfer equation. In numerical study, SIMPLE algorithm is applied for fluid flow analysis, and the investigations of combustion gas induced by fire is performed by FAST model of HAZARD I program. In this study, numerical simulation on the combined naturnal convection and radiation is carried out in a partial enclosure filled with absorbed-emitted gray media, but is not considered scattering problem. The streamlines, isothermal lines, average radiation intensity and kinetic energy are compared the results of pure convection with those of the combined convection-radiation, the combined heat transfer. Comparing the results of pure convection with those of the combined convection-radiation, the combined heat transfer analysis shows the stronger circulation than those of the pure convection. Three different locations of heat source are considered to observe the effect of heat source location on the heat transfer phenomena. As the results, the circulation and the heat transfer in the left region from heating block are much more influenced than those in the right region. It is also founded that the radiation effect cannot be neglected in analyzing the building in fire. And as the results of combustion gas analysis from FAST model, it is found that O2 concentration is decreased according to time. While CO and CO2 concentration are rapidly increased in the beginning(about 100sec), but slowly decreased from that time on.
An experimental study has been conducted to evaluate the effects of $CO_{2}$ on heat transfer from hydrogen oxygen-enriched flame. Experiments were performed on flames stabilized by a co-flow swirl burner, which mounted on top of the furnace. Five composition conditions of oxidizer were chosen with replacing $N_{2}$ with $CO_{2}$. In a steady state, total and radiative heat flux rates from the flame to the wall of furnace has been measured using heat flux meters. Temperature distribution in furnace also has been checked. Increasing $CO_{2}$ ratio in the oxidizer, the dominant heat transfer mode was changed into convection from radiation. Temperature in the furnace decreased but total heat flux increased.
The present study has numerically investigated the effects of the fuel-side nitrogen dilution on the precise structure and NOx formation characteristics of the turbulent syngas nonpremixed flames. Numerical results indicate that for highly diluted case, the flame structure is dominantly influenced by the turbulence-chemistry interaction and marginally modified by the radiation effect. On the other hand, no-dilution case with the longer flight time and the relatively intermediate scalar dissipation rate is influenced strongly by the radiative cooling as well as moderately by the turbulence-chemistry interaction.
Investigation on ignition and flame propagation of pyrolyzing fuel in a cylindrical enclosure is accomplished. The pyrolyzing fuel of cylindrical shape is located in an outer cylinder sustained at high-temperature. Due to gravity, the buoyancy motion is inevitably incurred in the enclosure and this affects the flame initiation and propagation behavior. The radiative heat transfer plays an important role since a high temperature difference is involved in the problem. Numerical studies have been performed over overheat ratio, and vertical fuel eccentricity. The location of flame onset is affected by the vertical eccentricity of inner pyrolyzing fuel as well as thermal conditions applied.

An analysis of radiative heat transfer has been conducted on axisymmetric finite cylindrical media. It is assumed that the temperature in the media is uniformly distributed and the boundaries are diffusely emitting and reflecting at a constant temperature. The scattering phase function is represented by the delta-Eddington approximation to account for highly forward scattering by particulates just as in the combustion system. Exact numerical solutions are obtained by Gaussian quadrature method and compared with P-1 and P-3 approximation solutions to verify their engineering application limit. The effects of optical thickness, scattering albedo, wall emissivity and aspect ratio are investigated. The results show that P-3 approximation is found to be in good agreement with the exact solution.

The extinction characteristics of low strain rate normal gravity (1-g) nonpremixed methane-air flames were studied numerically and experimentally. A time-dependent axisymmetric two-dimensional (2D) model considering buoyancy effects and radiative heat transfer was developed to capture the structure and extinction limits of 1-g flames. One-dimensional (1D) computations were also conducted to provide information on 0-g flames. A 3-step global reaction mechanism was used in both the 1D and 2D computations to predict the measured extinction limit and flame temperature. A specific maximum heat release rate was introduced to quantify the local flame strength and to elucidate the extinction mechanism. Overall fractional contribution by each term in the energy equation to the heat release was evaluated to investigate the multi-dimensional structure and radiative extinction of 1-g flames. Images of flames were taken for comparison with the model calculation undergoing extinction. The two-dimensional numerical model was validated by comparing flame temperature profiles and extinction limits with experiments and ID computation results. The 2D computations yielded insight into the extinction mode and flame structure of 1-g flames. Two combustion regimes depending on the extinction mode were identified. Lateral heat loss effects and multi-dimensional flame structure were also found. At low strain rates of 1-g flame ('Regime A'), the flame is extinguished from the weak outer flame edge, which is attributed to multi-dimensional flame structure and flow field. At high strain rates, ('Regime B'), the flame extinction initiates near the flame centerline due to an increased diluent concentration in reaction zone, which is the same as the extinction mode of 1D flame. These two extinction modes could be clearly explained with the specific maximum heat release rate.

The main motivation for this study was to establish a CFD-based procedure for the analysis of heating characteristics, particularly in industrial furnaces. As certain open-source software packages have gained popularity in dealing with complex industrial problems, the OpenFOAM framework was selected for further development of advanced physical models to meet industrial requirements. In this study, the newly developed comprehensive model was applied to simulate physical processes in the full-scale horizontal furnace of a continuous galvanizing line (CGL). The numerical results obtained indicate that the current approach predicts heating characteristics reasonably well. It was also found that radiative heat transfer plays a dominant role in heating the moving strip. To improve the predictability of our method, further work is required to model the turbulence-chemistry interaction realistically, as well as to impose a physically correct thermal wall boundary condition.

Experiments were conducted to clarify role of the outermost edge flame on low-strain-rate flame extinction in buoyancy-suppressed non-premixed methane flames diluted with He and $N_2$. The use of He curtain flow produced a microgravity level of $10^{-2}-10^{-3}g$ in $N_2$- and He-diluted non-premixed counterflow flame experiments. The critical He and $N_2$ mole fractions at extinction with a global strain rate were examined at various burner diameters (10, 20, and 25 mm). The results showed that the extinction curves differed appreciably with burner diameter. Before the turning point along the extinction curve, low-strain-rate flames were extinguished via shrinkage of the outermost edge flame with and without self-excitation. High-strain-rate flames were extinguished via a flame hole while the outermost edge flame was stationary. These characteristics could be identified by the behavior of the outermost edge flame. The results also showed that the outermost edge flame was not influenced by radiative heat loss but by convective heat addition and conductive heat losses to the ambient He curtain flow. The numerical results were discussed in detail. The self-excitation before the extinction of a low-strain-rate flame was well described by a dependency of the Strouhal number on global strain rate and normalized nozzle exit velocity.

Flame characteristics and NO emission behavior in $CH_4$/air-air premixed counterflow flames with applying FIR and FGR with $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ were investigated numerically by varying the ratios of FIR and FGR as well as global strain rate. Chemical effects of added $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ via FIR and FGR were analyzed through comparing flame characteristics and NO behaviors from real species($CO_2$ and $H_2O$) with those from their artificial species($XCO_2$ and $XH_2O$) which have the same thermochemical, radiative, and transport properties to those for the real species. The results showed that flame temperature and NO emission with FIR varied much more sensitively than that with FGR. Those varied little irrespective of adding $CO_2$, $H_2O$, and their artificial species to the fuel stream via FIR. However, Those were varied complicatedly by chemical effects of added $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ via FGR. Detailed analyses for them were made and discussed.

Thermal analyses have been performed to study the effect of location of fuel ring and thermal barrier coatings in regenerative cooling channels in a full-scale combustor. For the effective cooling, the fuel ring has better be installed near axial location of the low expansion ratio and low heat flux, and branching of cooling channels is preferable. Also, the radiative cooled nozzle extension is thought to be reasonable for the cooling of combustion walls. Among the possible coatings, $Y_2O_3$ stabilized $ZrO_2$ coating and Ni/Cr coating have been adopted. Compared with Ni/Cr coating which has high oxidation resistance, $Y_2O_3$ stabilized $ZrO_2$ coating, one of ceramic coatings is found to be much effective to sustain the thermal survivability of combustion walls.
