The ocean's response to the Pinatubo and 1259 volcanic eruptions was investigated using an ocean general circulation model equipped with an energy balance model. Volcanic eruptions release gases into the atmosphere which increases the aerosol optical depth and acts to reduce the incoming short-wave radiation. For example, there was a huge volcanic eruption (Pinatubo) in 1991 which reduced the global mean radiative forcing by about 3 W $m^{-2}$. Two numerical experiments were simulated. The first experiment features the Pinatubo eruption and the second experiment simulates the much larger volcanic eruption that occurred in 1259 when the radiative forcing was reduced by 7 times compared to the Pinatubo event. With the reduced radiative forcing due to the Pinatubo eruption at about 3 W $m^{-2}$ and 1259 eruption at about 21 W $m^{-2}$, the global mean sea surface temperature (SST) decreased to its lowest in the second year after each event by about $0.4^{\circ}C$ and $1.6^{\circ}C$, respectively. Sea surface salinity (SSS) increased substantially in the northern North Pacific, northern North Atlantic, and the Southern Ocean. The reduced SST together with SSS increased ocean convection, which yielded an increase in North Atlantic Deep Water, Antarctic Bottom Water, and North Pacific Intermediate Water production and their outflows. The increase in overturning circulation eventually increased the pole-ward ocean heat fluxes. In conclusion, huge volcanic eruptions perturb the ocean substantially and their hallmarks last for more than a decade, confirming the importance of volcanic eruptions in illustrating the decadal-climate variability recorded in the paleoclimate proxy data for the past million years.
The annual variations of sea surface temperature (SST), air temperature (AT), and sea-air temperature separation (SST-AT) in the East Sea (Japan Sea) are studied by harmonic analysis of the monthly data in 2 by 2 degree rectangles. In the Tsushima Current region of the Japan Sea, the annual means of SST and AT are high due to warm water advection by the current, and the annual amplitudes of SST and AT are small because the annual variations of heat advection the the current and of the incoming solar radiation are almost out of phase each other. In summer the SST and the AT in the Japan Sea are almost the same, but in winter the SST is $6{\sim}10^{\circ}C$ higher than the AT. The physical processes responsible for the observed SST-AT in the Japan Sea and their consequences in the sea-air thermal interactions are discussed in this paper.

Flame characteristics and NO emission behavior in $CH_4$/air-air premixed counterflow flames with applying FIR and FGR with $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ were investigated numerically by varying the ratios of FIR and FGR as well as global strain rate. Chemical effects of added $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ via FIR and FGR were analyzed through comparing flame characteristics and NO behaviors from real species($CO_2$ and $H_2O$) with those from their artificial species($XCO_2$ and $XH_2O$) which have the same thermochemical, radiative, and transport properties to those for the real species. The results showed that flame temperature and NO emission with FIR varied much more sensitively than that with FGR. Those varied little irrespective of adding $CO_2$, $H_2O$, and their artificial species to the fuel stream via FIR. However, Those were varied complicatedly by chemical effects of added $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ via FGR. Detailed analyses for them were made and discussed.

Space Imaging Sensor operated on LEO is affected from the Earth IR and Albedo as well as the Sun Radiation. The Imaging Sensor exposed to extreme environment needs thermal control subsystem to be maintained in operating/non-operating allowable temperature. Generally, units are periodically dissipated on spacecraft panel, which is designed as radiator. Because thermal design of the imaging sensor inside a spacecraft is isolated, heat pipes connected to radiators on the panel efficiently transfer dissipation of the units. First of all, preliminary thermal design of radiating area and heater power is performed through steady energy balance equation. Based on preliminary thermal design, on-orbit thermal analysis is calculated by SINDA, so calculation for thermal design could be easy and rapid. Radiators are designed to rib-type in order to maintain radiating performance and reduce mass. After on-orbit thermal analysis, thermal requirements for Space Imaging Sensor are verified.

Solar energy conversion to hydrogen was carried out via a two-step thermochemical water splitting using metal oxide redox pair. To simulate the solar radiation, a 7 kW short arc Xe-lamp was used. Partially reduced iron oxide and cerium oxide have the water splitting ability, respectively. So, $Fe_3O_4$ supported on $CeO_2$ was selected as the active material. $Fe_3O_4/CeO_2$(20 wt/80 wt%) was prepared by impregnation method, then the active material was washcoated on the ceramic honeycomb monolith made of mullite and cordierite. Oxygen was released at the reduction step($1673{\sim}1823\;K$) and hydrogen was produced from water at lower temperature($873{\sim}1273\;K$). The result demonstrate the possibility of the 2-step thermochemical water splitting hydrogen production by the active material washcoated monolith. And hydrogen and oxygen was produced separately without any separation process in a monolith installed reactor. But the SEM and EDX analysis results revealed that the support used in this experiment is not suitable due to the thermal instability and coating material migration.
An UET (ultrasound excited thermography) has been used for several years for a remote non-destructive testing in the automotive and aircraft industry. It provides a thermo sonic image for a defect detection. A thermograhy is based On a propagation and a reflection of a thermal wave, which is launched from the surface into the inspected sample by an absorption of a modulated radiation. For an energy deposition to a sample, the UET uses an ultrasound excited vibration energy as an internal heat source. In this paper the applicability of the UET for a realtime defect detection is described. Measurements were performed on two kinds of pipes made from a copper and a CFRP material. In the interior of the CFRP pipe (70mm diameter), a groove (width - 6mm, depth - 2.7mm, and length - 70mm) was engraved by a milling. In the case of the copper pipe, a defect was made with a groove (width - 2mm, depth - 1mm, and length - 110 mm) by the same method. An ultrasonic vibration energy of a pulsed type is injected into the exterior side of the pipe. A hot spot, which is a small area around the defect was considerably heated up when compared to the other intact areas, was observed. A test On a damaged copper pipe produced a thermo sonic image, which was an excellent image contrast when compared to a CFRP pipe. Test on a CFRP pipe with a subsurface defect revealed a thermo sonic image at the groove position which was a relatively weak contrast.
This paper is intended to provide key issues and current research outcomes on accelerator-based Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). Accelerator-based neutron sources are efficient to provide epithermal neutron beams for BNCT; hence, much research, worldwide, has focused on the development of components crucial for its realization: neutron-producing targets and cooling equipment, beam-shaping assemblies, and treatment planning systems. Proton beams of 2.5 MeV incident on lithium target results in high yield of neutrons at relatively low energies. Cooling equipment based on submerged jet impingement and micro-channels provide for viable heat removal options. Insofar as beam-shaping assemblies are concerned, moderators containing fluorine or magnesium have the best performance in terms of neutron accumulation in the epithermal energy range during the slowing-down from the high energies. NCT_Plan and SERA systems, which are popular dose distribution analysis tools for BNCT, contain all the required features (i.e., image reconstruction, dose calculations, etc.). However, detailed studies of these systems remain to be done for accurate dose evaluation. Advanced research centered on accelerator-based BNCT is active in Korea as evidenced by the latest research at Hanyang University. There, a new target system and a beam-shaping assembly have been constructed. The performance of these components has been evaluated through comparisons of experimental measurements with simulations. In addition, a new patient-specific treatment planning system, BTPS, has been developed to calculate the deposited dose and radiation flux in human tissue. It is based on MCNPX, and it facilitates BNCT efficient planning based via a user-friendly Graphical User Interface (GUI).

Recently, the cases of BIPV(Building-integrated Photovoltaic) have been increased with interest in renewable energy application for buildings. PV System in building can perform a variety of roles as an energy supplier, exterior materials, aesthetic element and etc. To apply PV modules in buildings, various factors should be considered, such as the installation angle and orientation of PV module, shading, and temperature. The temperature of PV modules that are attached to building surfaces especially is one of the most important factors, as it affects both the electrical efficiency of a PV module and the energy load in a building. BIPV modules designed as finished material for spandrels are presented in this paper. The purpose of this study is to analysis on the thermal performance characteristics of BIPV modules. This study dealt with different types of BIPV modules depending on the backside material, such as clear glass and backsheet. The analysis of monitoring data shows that the PV module temperature was closely related to the solar radiation on the BIPV module surface, and the BIPV used at the backside also had an effect on the PV module temperature that in turn determines its thermal performance.

;The Kwinana Shoreline Fumigation Experiment(KSFE) took place in Fremantle, WA, Australia between 23 January and 8 February, 1995. All measurement systems performed to expectation. The CSIRO DAR(Division of Atmospheric Research) LIDAR measured plume sections from near the Kwinana Power Station(KPS) stacks to up to about 5 km downstream. It also measured boundary layer aerosols and the structure of the boundary layer on some occasions. Both stages A and C of KPS were used as tracers at different times. Radiosonde and double theodolite sounding systems measured temperature, humidity, air pressure and wind structure at the coast(Woodman Point) and at the inland(ALCOA residue dump) site at intervals of roughly two hours. These were supplemented by mid afternoon soundings(radiosonde and single theodolite) by Department of Environmental Protection(DEP) at Swanbourne. The Flinders aircraft measured wind, turbulence and temperature structure of the atmospheric boundary layer, concentrations of $C0_2,\;0_3,\;S0_2\;and\;NO_x$ in the smoke plumes and surface radiation over both land and sea. CSIRO DCET(Division of Coal and Energy Technology) vehicle successfully interceptde many smoke plumes and using a range of tracers will be able to identify the various sources much of the time. Routine data from the DEP and Kwinana Industrial Council(KIC) air quality monitoring networks were also automatically logged. Murdoch University measured surface heat flux at Hope Valldy monitoring station and also at Wattleup monitoring station for the last five days. The heart of the LIDAR system is a Neodymium-doped Yttrium-aluminumgarnet(Nd:Y AG) laser operating at a fundamental wavelength of 1064 nm, with harmonics fo 532 nm and 355 nm. A small fraction of the laser beam is scattered back to the LIDAR, collected by a telescope and detedted by a photomultiplier tube. The intensity of the signal as a function of time is a measure of the particle concentration as a function of distance along the line of the laser shot. The results of nine days special field observations are summarized in detail.etail.

The land reclamation area of Saemangeum(Kunsan) is located between 126$^{\circ}$10' E~126$^{\circ}$50' E and 35$^{\circ}$35' N~356$^{\circ}$05'N at the western coast of the Korean peninsula. The are many small islands including extensive areas of semi-diurnally flooded and dewatered tidal flats. The reclamation area of Saemangeum has a range of 5.6m spring tide and the maximum tidal current speed is about 1.41m s-1 in ordinary spring tide. Most of the sediments deposited on the tidal flats are transported from the Geum river, the Manjyung river and The Dongjin river. The soil in this area consists of silty sand with the depth of 10m to 30m . The wind in winter is strong from the direction of northwest. In the past twenty years, land reclamation projects for agricutural purpose or industrial cocmplex have been mostly implemented along the western coast of Korea. Saemangeum coastal area is being constructed the33km sea dike and 40, 100ha reclamation area. The purpose of this study is to find the residual circulations in four seasons after the dike construction by a robust diagnostic and prognostic numerical model. Heat flux at the sea surface in January ,May , August , October was asopted on the basis on the daily inflow of solar radiation at the earth surface, assuming an average atomospheric transmission and no clouds , as a function of latitude and time of year(George L.P.J.E William, 1990). The discharge from the Geum , the Mankyung and the Dongjin rivers was adopted on the basis of experience formula of river flow in January , May ,August, October (The M. of C.Korea, 1993) . Water temperature and salinity along the open boundaries are obtained from the results of field observation s.
