Recently, wood is attracting attention as green building interior decoration material. When wood is used as building interior decoration material, excellent dimensional stability and thermal performance is required. In this study, superheated steam treatment process and thermal compression process were applied to flat sawn Pinus koraiensis wood panel in order to improve dimensional stability and thermal performance. According to results of this study, superheated steam treatment process and thermal compression process improve thermal performance and dimensional stability of wood, especially in tangential direction. The spring back in radial direction reduces the effect of thermal compression on dimensional stability of wood in radial direction.

The pollution problem of fossil energy sources has caused the development of green energy harvesting systems. Piezoelectric energy harvesting technology has been developed under those external environmental factors. A piezoelectric energy harvester can be defined as a device which transforms mechanical vibration or impact energy into electrical energy. Most researches have focused on bender structures. However, these have a limitation on energy efficiency because of the small effective electromechanical coupling factor, around 10%. Therefore, we should look for a new design for energy harvesting. A cymbal energy harvester can be a good candidate for the high-power energy harvester because it uses a high amplification mechanism using endcaps while keeping a higher electromechanical coupling factor. In this research, we focused on energy efficiency improvements of the cymbal energy harvester by changing the polarization direction, because the electromechanical coupling factor of the k33 mode and the k15 mode is larger than that of the k31 mode. Theoretically, we checked the cymbal harvester with radial polarization and it could obtain 6 times larger energy than that with the k31 direction polarization. Furthermore, we verified the theoretical expectation using the finite element method program. Consequently, we could expect a more efficient cymbal harvester with the radial polarization by comparing two polarization directions.

This paper describes the design and evaluation procedure of an ultra-precision rotary table for freeform generating machined tools. Design of the thrust and journal hydrostatic bearings and experimental evaluation of the table were performed. To get the compact size and less lost motion direct drive servomotor with ultra precision encoder. From the considered design, following performance were confirmed by experiment. The total stiffness of the prototype rotary table was 483.6 $N/{\mu}m$ and 97.6 $N/{\mu}m$ for axial and radial direction, respectively. Rotational accuracy of the table was investigated by capacitive sensor and reversal measurement technique, and 0.10 ${\mu}m$ radial direction and 0.05 ${\mu}m$ axial direction of the rotational accuracy were confirmed. The micro resolution of the table was also investigated with displacement of capacitive sensor, and $0.5/10000^{\circ}$ of micro resolution was confirmed. Index accuracy of the table was evaluated by the autocollimator and polygon mirror, and the $\pm0.39$ arcsec accuracy and $\pm0.16$ arcsec repeatability of the table were confirmed. Those are under the general requirements of ultra precision rotary tables for freeform generating machined tools.
A study was carried out to observe the 1% aqueous safranine solution flow speed in longitudinal and radial directions of softwood Metasequoia glyptostroboides, diffuse-porous wood Anthocephalus cadamba and ring-porouswood Fraxinus rhynchophylla. In radial direction, ray cells and in longitudinal direction, tracheids, vessel and wood fiber were considered for the measurement of liquid penetration speed at less than 12% moisture contents (MC). The length, lumen diameter, pit diameter, end wall pit diameter and the numbers of end wall pits determined for the flow rate. The liquid flow in the those cells was captured via video and the capillary flow rate in the ones were measured. Vessel in hardwood species and tracheids in softwood was found to facilitate prime role in longitudinal penetration. Anatomical features like the length and diameter, end-wall pit numbers of ray parenchyma were found also responsible fluid flow differences. On the other hand, vessel and fiber structure affected the longitudinal flow of liquids. Therefore, the average liquid penetration depth in longitudinal tracheids of Metasequoia glyptostroboides was found the highest among all cells considered in Anthocephalus cadamba and Fraxinus rhynchophylla In radial direction, ray parenchyma of Metasequoia glyptostroboides was found the highest depth and the one of Fraxinus rhynchophylla was the lowest. The solution was penetrated lowest depth in the wood fiber of Fraxinus rhynchophylla. The large vessel of Fraxinus rhynchophylla was found the lowest depth among the vessels. The solutin was penetrated to the wood fiber of Anthocephalus cadamba higher than the one of Fraxinus rhynchophylla.

When strong static magnetic field is applied to the TMP, it is expected that the presence of the magnetic field might retard the velocity of the blades which results in the change of the pumping speed of the TMP. However, such effect of the magnetic field on the TMP has not been well characterized. Thus, under the strong magnetic field, monitoring pumping speed as well as generated heat, pressure, and vibration of the TMP may be an important issue to understand the magnetic field tolerance of the TMP and the development of magnetic shielding technique for the key components of the pump. For this purpose, magnetic field generation system to the vertical direction by a circular current source was firstly designed and suggested [K. Baik et al., 44th Annual Conf. KVS, 22(1), 153, (2012)]. In the current study, another magnetic field generation systems are presented to apply the magnetic field to the horizontal and radial directions by the rectangular current sources and the permanent magnets respectively. Such systems were made to generate at least 50 Gauss of magnetic field along the vertical direction and at least 25 Gauss of magnetic field along the horizontal or radial direction. Current study introduces the evaluation system of the magnetic field along the vertical, horizontal, and radial directions and presents the measured experimental results of the magnetic field when such systems are combined with the equipment where TMP will be installed.
Bamboo culm is in the form of a tube/pipe, composed of internodes which are bounded by a partition/diaphragm (node). Anatomically, bamboo is composed of vascular bundles and parenchyma ground tissue. One of the constituents of vascular bundles is fibers that are grouped to form a fiber sheath. The anatomical structure of the nodes and internodes is thought to influence the strength of bamboo strips, including tensile strength. This study aimed to determine the characteristics of vascular bundles (distribution and fiber percentage) and their effects on the density and tensile strength of Gigantochloa apus bamboo strips with and without nodes. The bamboo culms were divided into three parts (outer, middle, and inner) along the radial direction. The results showed that the distribution of vascular bundles and percentage of fiber sheaths decreased significantly from the outer to the inner layer. This also had a significantly decreased density and tensile strength. Furthermore, the number of vascular bundles (in the transverse plane) was greater in the internodes than in the nodes. Anatomically, the orientation of the vascular bundles at irregular nodes is observed in the radial and tangential planes, where the direction is not only in the axial direction, but also in the radial and tangential directions. This caused the tensile strength of the G. apus bamboo strips to be lower at the nodes than at the internodes.
The distribution and kinematic information of the planetary nebula (PN) may provide a hint about the Galactic dynamics and evolutionary history. An analysis of the Galactic planetary nebular distribution and kinematics (distance, direction, velocity) is underwent, using the 502 PNs observational data given in the ‘THE STRASBOURG-ESO CATALOGUE OF GALACTIC PLANETARY NEBULAE.’ The representative average radial velocities, $(V_r)s$ is derived in six different directions of galactic latitudes, $l = 0^{\circ},\;90{\circ},\;180{\circ},\;270{\circ},$ plus apex and antapex $(56{\circ},\;236{\circ})$, respectively. The PNe near the apex approaches to the Sun with radial velocities, which values are $(V_r) = 69.0 km/s;$ whereas, those near the antapex recedes with $(V_r) = 64.1 km/s$, respectively. No particular trends are found along the z direction, although more PNs are found below the Galactic plane. This implies that the 3rd generation objects, PNs, move slowly on the galactic plane compared to the 4th generation stars like the Sun, indicative of possible interaction.

Some living thingsuse micro- or nano- structures for living in nature. Scientists and engineers made efforts to mimic them, and they succeeded in making new types of applications. They used 'Namib desert beetle' to self-filling device by moisture harvesting and 'lotus leaf' to self-cleaning device by water repelling. 'Namib desert beetle' and lotus leaf have micro-patterns on their surface, which consists of hydrophobic or hydrophilic materials [1]. Moreover, micro-patterns on the surface make self-filling or self-cleaning property enhanced because of the surface roughness. Surface roughness enhances wettability [2]. Micro-pattern is a significant factor to make the surface be functional, so we want to make new types of functional surface by micro-patterning. In this work,we make several functional micro-patterns (radial, line, and dot arrays) using maskless lithography and analyze the characteristics of each micro-pattern. In order to analyze and understand surface characteristics, micro-patterns with varying sizes are investigated. All experiments are proceeded on mr-DWL5 photo resists coated on silicon wafers in same condition. All the experiments have demonstrated good performances about hydrophobic or hydrophilic property corresponding to their material and structural combinations. In radial micro-pattern, although the surface is flat, water drops on hydrophilic radial pattern can be convergent to a middle point and water drops on hydrophobic radial pattern can be divergent from the middle point. In line array micro-pattern, water drops can roll off along only one direction in parallel with the line arrays. Such phenomena might be mainly caused by the local change of surface roughness. From these results, controlling the movement and direction of water drops is made feasible without introducing a slope, which can potentially be used for new types of applications.
Small clear specimens of Quercus acutissima Carr. and Larix caempferi Carr. were used to measure shrinkage and thermal conductivity for the reasonable and effective use. All samples were conditioned to 18, 12, 5% moisture contents in a humidity chamber of 86, 66, 20% relative humidity(RH), respectively and room temperature(23℃) All specimens were conducted on the shrinkage and thermal conductivity test at each MCs. These processes(cycle) were repeated three times. The radial and tangential shrinkages of Quercus acutissima Carr. and Larix caempferi Carr. decreased at each level of MCs, with the increasing cycles. The radial and tangential shrinkages increased as the specific gravity(on oven-dry weight and volume basis) increased. Thermal conductivities of the radial and tangential direction of Quercus acutissima Carr. and Larix caempferi Carr. increased at each levels of MCs, with increasing cycles. Good correlations were obtained between shrinkages and thermal conductivities of radial and tangential direction, and specific gravity (on oven-dry weight and oven-dry volume basis) and MC.
