  • In co-orbiting scroll compressor, the two scroll members are to orbit with independent radii, producing a relative orbit motion between them. One scroll member is driven by the crank mechanism while the motion of the other member is determined by geometrical constraints and reacting forces. This paper presents an analytical study on the performance of a co-orbiting scroll compressor. The following results have been obtained: Radial contact force between the scroll wraps is virtually free from the centrifugal force of the orbiting scroll member. The frictional losses are somewhat increased due to the complicated drive mechanism, yielding to a little lower EER compared to conventional radially compliant scroll compressors .

  • This study presents the measured unsteady flctuation of impeller discharge flow for a centrifugal compressor in an unstable operating region. The characteristics of the blade-to-blade flow at rotating stall onset were investigated by measuring unsteady velocity fluctuations at several different diffuser axial distances using a hot wire anemometer. The flow characteristics in terms of the radial and tangential velocity components and the flow angle distribution at the impeller exit were analyzed using phase-locked ensemble averaging techniques. As a result, increase or decrease of the radial velocity component during the rotating stall is dominated by that of the suction side. The radial velocity distributions show the opposite trends in the regions where the radial velocity during rotating stall onset increases and decreases.

  • The effects of casing shape on the performance and interaction between the impeller and casing in a small-size turbo-compressor are investigated. Numerical analysis is conducted for the compressor with circular and single volute casings from inlet to discharge nozzle. In order to predict the flow pattern inside the entire impeller, vaneless diffuer and casing, calculations with multiple frames of reference method between the rotating and stationery parts of the domain are carried out. For compressible turbulent flow fields, the continuity and three-dimensional time-averaged Wavier-Stokes equations are employed. To evaluate the performance of two types of casings, the static pressure and loss coefficients are obtained with various flow rates. Also, static pressure distributions around casings are studied for different casing shapes, which are very important to predict the distribution of radial load. To prove the accuracy of numerical results, measurements of static pressure around casing and pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the compressor are peformed for the circular casing. Comparisons of these results between the experimental and numerical analyses are conducted, and reasonable agreement is obtained.

  • In this study, a program to design a multi-stage axial compressor is developed wi th mean-line analysis and vortex methods. In a preliminary design stage, a method. to design in a short time is needed and mean-line analysis is usually used for this purpose. Arbitrary pressure ratio and reaction can be assigned to generate overall geometry and several vortex methods are adopted to consider the radial distribution of velocity and reaction. The variation of performance, when we use free vortex, forced vortex, and exponential method, is compared and discussed.

  • This paper reports an experimental investigation on a centrifugal compressor with the adjustable inlet guide vane. The compression system is composed of a radial impeller, a vaneless diffuser, and an IGV. The results have shown that surge line on the performance map is affected by the amount of prewhirl and the prewhirl has an effect on transient region between rotating stall and surge. The surge lines have been shifted toward the lower flow region with the increased positive prewhirl and the higher flow region with the increased negative prewhirl. During the unsteady performance test, it was also found that the transient region was reduced with the increased negative prewhirl, and weak signals of rotating stall were detected just before surge as the positive prewhirl was increased.

  • For a reciprocating compressor of household refrigerators, a direct analogy between the pipe flow network and the electric circuit network has been utilized to set up a mathematical model for oil supply system. Individual lubrication elements of the oil supply system, such as propeller- installed oil cap, oil galleries, radial oil feeding holes, spiral oil grooves, and various sliding surfaces have been analogized by equivalent electric elements, and these have been combined together to form an electric circuit corresponding to the whole oil supply system. By solving the closed network equations of the model, oil flow rates at various lubrication elements could be obtained. Total amount of the oil flow rate drawn into the shaft has been measured and compared reasonably well with the prediction of the numerical simulation.

  • An effective balancing method for mil compressors is developed based on vibration plane model. By assuming the design range of balancer size is not large and considering only the radial axial direction rigid vibration of the mil compressors, we can find the vibration plane (V-plane) describing the vibration level of the scroll compressor depending upon balancer design specifications. By in the intersection of two minimum lines (areas) obtained from the couple of V-Planes we can find the design lesion to minimize vibration level of the compressor. The full design process is described by using an illustrative example with upper and lower balancer weights. Further more sensitivity analysis of parameters important for designation of size and positioning of the balancer is analyzed.

  • This study describes the results of the analysis of measured rotating stall signal in a centrifugal compressor with vaneless diffuser. Unsteady flow and rotating stall in vaneless diffuser were investigated by measuring of unsteady velocity fluctuation using hot-wire anemometer. Experiments were carried out in several impeller rotating speeds, at different radius ratios. Single hot -wire was used to study the characteristics of rotating stall. As a result, the abrupt rotating stall was detected at all measured impeller rotating speeds and the several flow coefficients which are less than 0.16. The number of the stall cell was one at all measured rotational speeds, and the rotating direction was the same as that of the impeller. As the flow rate decreased, the profile of the phase averaged radial velocity component with time changed from a sawtooth to a sine wave.
