  • A U-80 propeller and its modified version, U-75 propeller, are used for a micro air vehicle. The performance characteristics of a U-80 propeller and a U-75 propeller have not much known in the published literature. Thus, their aerodynamic characteristics are investigated using a lifting surface numerical method. The lifting surface method is validated by comparing computed results with measured data in a wind tunnel. From the computed results, it is found that the U-75 propeller produces larger thrust with higher efficiency than the U-80 propeller. To enhance the performance of these propellers, a new propeller is designed by following the sequential design procedures with the design parameters such as hub-tip ratio, maximum camber and its position, and chord length distribution along the radial direction. The performance of the designed propeller is shown to be improved much comparing with those of both the U-80 and U-75 propellers.

  • The purpose of the present study is to search for and study the origin of planetary companion by a precise radial velocity (RV) survey for K dwarfs. The high-resolution spectroscopy of the fiber-fed Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO) is used from September 2008 to June 2012. We report the detection of two new exoplanets in orbit around HD 208527, and HD 220074 with exhibiting a periodic variation of 875.5 and 672.1 days. The examinations of surface inhomogeneous are no related to the RV variations and Keplerian motion is the most likely explanation, which suggests that the RV variations arise from an orbital motion under the influence of planetary companion. We obtain the minimum masses for the exoplanets of 11.5 and 11.1 MJup with an orbital semi-major axis of 2.3 and 1.6 AU and an eccentricity of 0.08 and 0.14, respectively. From the literatures and our estimations of stellar parameters, the luminosity class of HD 208527 is changed K dwarf to K giant and the spectral type of HD 220074 is confirmed M giant rather than K dwarf. HD 220074 is the first M giant star harboring a planetary companion.

  • This paper is concerned with Interval Type-2 Radial Basis Function Neural Network classifier realized with the aid of Census Transform(CT) and (2D)2LDA methods. CT is considered to improve performance of face recognition in a variety of illumination variations. (2D)2LDA is applied to transform high dimensional image into low-dimensional image which is used as input data to the proposed pattern classifier. Receptive fields in hidden layer are formed as interval type-2 membership function. We use the coefficients of linear polynomial function as the connection weights of the proposed networks, and the coefficients and their ensuing spreads are learned through Conjugate Gradient Method(CGM). Moreover, the parameters such as fuzzification coefficient and the number of input variables are optimized by Artificial Bee Colony(ABC). In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed classifier, Yale B dataset which consists of images obtained under diverse state of illumination environment is applied. We show that the results of the proposed model have much more superb performance and robust characteristic than those reported in the previous studies.

  • This paper presents an application of power system fault diagnostic algorithm for the PEFP Proton Accelerator Research Center using neural network. Proposed fault diagnostic system is constructed by the radial basis function (RBF) neural network because it has the capabilities of the pattern classification and function approximation of any nonlinear function. Proposed system identifies faulted section in the power system based on information about the operation of protection devices such as relays and circuit breakers. In this paper, parameters of the RBF neural networks are tuned by the GA-TS algorithm, which has the global optimal solution searching capabilities. To show the validity of the proposed method, proposed algorithm has been tested with a practical power system in Proton Accelerator Research Center of PEFP.

  • Methods to measure and estimate transpiration of a forest composed of evergreen broad-leaved trees (Pasania edulis Makino) are studied. Heat pulse velocity has been measured along with soil moisture and micrometeorological factors at the Fukuoka Experimental Forest, the Research Institute of Kyushu University Forests in Fukuoka, Japan (33$^{\circ}$38'N, 130$^{\circ}$31'E, alt. 75m). Tree cutting measurement was conducted to convert the heat pulse velocity into sap flow and transpiration. A big leaf model to calculate transpiration and Interception loss is examined and the estimated values are compared with the measured values obtained from the heat pulse measurement. The results show that 1) Pasania edulis Makino posessing radial pore structure had relatively high water content and high heat pulse velocity even within the central part of the stem near the pith, 2) the heat pulse velocity was well correspond to the water uptake in the tree cutting measurement, 3) the estimation of sap flow based on the heat pulse velocity is accurate, and 4) the big leaf model using the parameters obtained from measurement of a portable photosynthesis system in one day in summer gives reasonable estimation of transpiration independent of seasons and weather.

  • In the present paper, we report a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of non-rigid zeolite-A framework only as the base case for a consistent study of the role of intraframework interaction on several zeolite-A systems using the same technique in our previous studies of rigid zeolite-A frameworks. Usual bond stretching, bond angle bending, torsional rotational, and non-bonded Lennard-Jones and electrostatic interactions are considered as intraframework interaction potentials. The comparison of experimental and calculated structural parameters confirms the validity of our MD simulation for zeolite-A framework. The radial distribution functions of non-rigid zeolite-A framework atoms characterize the vibrational motion of the framework atoms. Mean square displacements are all periodic with a short period of 0.08 ps and a slow change in the amplitude of the vibration with a long period of 0.53 ps. The displacement auto-correlation (DAC) and neighbor-correlation (DNC) functions describe the up-and-down motion of the framework atoms from the center of α-cage and the back-and-forth motion on each ring window from the center of each window. The DAC and DNC functions of the framework atoms from the center of α-cage at the 8-ring windows have the same period of the up-and-down motion, but those functions from the center of 8-ring window at the 8-ring windows are of different periods of the back-and-forth motion.

  • Current paper deals with thermoelastic static and free vibrational behaviors of axisymmetric thick cylinders reinforced with functionally graded (FG) randomly oriented graphene subjected to internal pressure and thermal gradient loads. The heat transfer and mechanical analyses of randomly oriented graphene-reinforced nanocomposite (GRNC) cylinders are facilitated by developing a weak form mesh-free method based on moving least squares (MLS) shape functions. Furthermore, in order to estimate the material properties of GRNC with temperature dependent components, a modified Halpin-Tsai model incorporated with two efficiency parameters is utilized. It is assumed that the distributions of graphene nano-sheets are uniform and FG along the radial direction of nanocomposite cylinders. By comparing with the exact result, the accuracy of the developed method is verified. Also, the convergence of the method is successfully confirmed. Then we investigated the effects of graphene distribution and volume fraction as well as thermo-mechanical boundary conditions on the temperature distribution, static response and natural frequency of the considered FG-GRNC thick cylinders. The results disclosed that graphene distribution has significant effects on the temperature and hoop stress distributions of FG-GRNC cylinders. However, the volume fraction of graphene has stronger effect on the natural frequencies of the considered thick cylinders than its distribution.

  • Interlocked armor layers of unbonded flexible risers may crush when risers are being launched. In order to predict the behavior of interlocked armor layers, they are usually simplified as rings with geometric and contact nonlinearity ignored in the open-literature. However, the equivalent thickness of the interlocked armor layer has not been addressed yet. In the present paper, a geometric coefficient ${\gamma}$ is introduced to the equivalent stiffness method, and a linear relationship between ${\gamma}$ and geometric parameters of interlocked armor layers is validated by analytical and finite element models. Radial stiffness and equivalent thickness of interlocked armor layers are compared with experiments and different equivalent methods, which show that the present method has a higher accuracy. Furthermore, hoop stress distribution of interlocked armor layer under crushing is predicted, which indicates the interlocked armor layer can be divided into two compression and two expansion zones by four symmetrically distributed singular points.

  • Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) are an unusual galaxy population. They are ghostlike galaxies with fainter surface brightness than normal dwarf galaxies, but they are as large as MW-like galaxies. The key question on UDGs is whether they are 'failed' giant galaxies or 'extended' dwarf galaxies. To answer this question, we study UDGs in massive galaxy clusters. We find an amount of UDGs in deep HST images of three Hubble Frontier Fields clusters, Abell 2744 (z=0.308), Abell S1063 (z=0.347), and Abell 370 (z=0.374). These clusters are the farthest and most massive galaxy clusters in which UDGs have been discovered until now. The color-magnitude relations show that most UDGs have old stellar population with red colors, while a few of them show bluer colors implying the existence of young stars. The stellar masses of UDGs show that they have less massive stellar components than the bright red sequence galaxies. The radial number density profiles of UDGs exhibit a drop in the central region of clusters, suggesting some of them were disrupted by strong gravitational potential. Their spatial distributions are not homogeneous, which implies UDGs are not virialized enough in the clusters. With virial masses of UDGs estimated from the fundamental manifold, most UDGs have M_200 = 10^10 - 10^11 M_Sun indicating that they are dwarf galaxies. However, a few of UDGs more massive than 10^11 M_Sun indicate that they are close to failed giant galaxies.

  • A complete solution for a soluble-boron-free (SBF) small modular reactor (SMR) is pursued with a new burnable absorber concept, namely centrally-shielded burnable absorber (CSBA). Neutronic flexibility of the CSBA design has been discussed with fuel assembly (FA) analyses. Major design parameters and goals of the SBF SMR are discussed in view of the reactor core design and three CSBA designs are introduced to achieve both a very low burnup reactivity swing (BRS) and minimal residual reactivity of the CSBA. It is demonstrated that the core achieves a long cycle length (~37 months) and high burnup (~30 GWd/tU), while the BRS is only about 1100 pcm and the radial power distribution is rather flat. This research also introduces a supplementary reactivity control mechanism using stainless steel as mechanical shim (MS) rod to obtain the criticality during normal operation. A further analysis is performed to investigate the local power peaking of the CSBA-loaded FA at MS-rodded condition. Moreover, a simple $B_4C$-based control rod arrangement is proposed to assure a sufficient shutdown margin even at the cold-zero-power condition. All calculations in this neutronic-thermal hydraulic coupled investigation of the 3D SBF SMR core are completed by a two-step Monte Carlo-diffusion hybrid methodology.
