An important approach towards solving the scattered data problem is by using radial basis functions. However, for a large class of smooth basis functions such as Gaussians, the existing theories guarantee the interpolant to approximate well only for a very small class of very smooth approximate which is the so-called 'native' space. The approximands f need to be extremely smooth. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to study approximation by a scattered shifts of a radial basis functions. We provide error estimates on larger spaces, especially on the homogeneous Sobolev spaces.

We study a semiparametric Bayesian approach to small area estimation under a nested error linear regression model with area level covariate subject to measurement error. Consideration is given to radial basis functions for the regression spline and knots on a grid of equally spaced sample quantiles of covariate with measurement errors in the nested error linear regression model setup. We conduct a hierarchical Bayesian structural measurement error model for small areas and prove the propriety of the joint posterior based on a given hierarchical Bayesian framework since some priors are defined non-informative improper priors that uses Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods to fit it. Our methodology is illustrated using numerical examples to compare possible models based on model adequacy criteria; in addition, analysis is conducted based on real data.

A new and efficient algorithm for the integration of the thermal-elasto-plastic constitutive equation is proposed. While it falls into the category of the return mapping method, the algorithm adopts the three point approximation of plastic corrector within one time increment step. The results of its application to a von Mises-type thermal-elasto-plastic model with combined hardening and temperature-dependent material properties show that the accurate iso-error maps are obtained for both angular and radial errors. The accuracy achieved is because the predicted stress increment in a single step calculation follows the exact value closely not only at the end of the step but also through the whole path. Also, the comparison of the computational time for the new and other algorithms shows that the new one is very efficient.
Recently it is attempted to manufacture gears by various cold forging methods to meet requirements of mass production and uniform qualities. Compared to machined gears cold forged ears reveal higher tooth strength and better surface roughness but they reveal lower geometrical accuracies. Therefore in the present study a series of experiments are performed to investigate relations between geometrical accuracies of dies and billet and those of the final product. The geometrical accuracies of forged gears are considered through functional gear-element tolerances by measuring pitch error profile error lead error radial error tooth thickness and rolling test. Results of the experiments can be summarized as follows: (1) involute spur gears of KS 5(or AGMA7) accuracies can be made,(2) concentricity of die set should be maintained within 0.01mm (3) clearance between the billet and die set should be less than 0.1mm (4) con-centricity and radial runout should be less than 0.08mm and 0.1mm respectively. However it is thought that FEM analysis of elastic/thermal deformations of dies and the billet is necessary for a better understanding of the findings obtained through the present study.

In high-capacity disk drives with ever-growing track density, the allowable level of position error signal (PES) is becoming smaller and smaller. A substantial portion of the PES is caused by disk vibration. This can be reduced by using a head gimbal assemblies (HGAs) that do not confine the slider movement to the vertical direction to disks, but allow movement to the radial direction of disks with respect to disk vibration. Several types of HGAs are proposed for such radial motion of the slider. Experimental results show that the PES levels are reduced by the proposed HGA-design concepts.

In healthcare and medical research, many important variables have a measurement error such as body mass index and laboratory data. It is also not easy to collect samples of large size because of high cost and long time required to collect the target patient satisfied with inclusion and exclusion criteria. Beside, the demand for solving a complex scientific problem has highly increased so that a semiparametric regression approach could be of substantial value solving this problem. To address the issues of measurement error, small domain and a scientific complexity, we conduct a multivariable Bayesian smoothing under structural measurement error covariate in this article. Specifically we enhance our previous model by incorporating other useful auxiliary covariates free of measurement error. For the regression spline, we use a radial basis functions with fixed knots for the measurement error covariate. We organize a fully Bayesian approach to fit the model and estimate parameters using Markov chain Monte Carlo. Simulation results represent that the method performs well. We illustrate the results using a national survey data for application.
In this paper, a on-line estimation method of the radial immersion angle using cutting force is presented. The ratio of cutting forces in feed and cross-feed directions acting on the single tooth at the immersion angle is a function of the immersion angle and the ratio of radial to tangential cutting force. It is found that the ratio of radial to tangential cutting force is not affected by cutting conditions and axial rake angle, which implies that the ratio determined by one preliminary experiment can be used regardless of the cutting conditions for a given tool and workpiece material. Using the measured cutting force during machining and predetermined ratio, the radial immersion ratio is estimated in process. Various experimental results show that the proposed method works within 5% error range.

In order to improve the rotational performances of NC lathe spindle system in high speed range, a new type(Floating-type driven by V-belt)spindle system was optimally designed and experimented. Through the results of the experiments, the rotational performances of the new type spindle system was discussed and compared with the three equivalent conventional lathe spindle systems. The spindle rotational accuracy( radial error motion of spindle axis), the accelation and the temperature rise of the front spindle bearings for the non-cutting operation were considered as the spindle rotational performances. The radial error motion of the spindle axis was measured by applying the modified L.R.L. method. Compared with the equivalent conventional spindle systems, the following results were obtained. (1) The new type spindle system reduces the radial error motion of the spindle axis in high speed range(1800rpm-2000rpm). (2) The new type spindle system reduces the acceleration and the temperature rise of the spindle bearings considerably with increasing the spindle speed. It is also confirmed that, by this new type spindle system, the max. allowable speed can be increased with satisfying the spindle rotational performances.
