  • Since 1980's, optimum design techniques for ship structural design have been developed to the preliminary design which aims at minimum weight or minimum cost design of mid-ship section based on analytic structural analysis. But the optimum structural design researches about the application for the detail design of local structure based on FEA have been still insufficient. This paper presents optimization technique for the detail design of a racing motor boat. To improve the performance and reduce the damage of a real existing racing boat, direct structural analyses; static and non-linear transient dynamic analyses, were carried out to check the constraints of minimum weight design. As a result, it is shown that the optimum structural design of a racing boat has to be focused on reducing impulse response from pitching motion than static response because the dynamic effect is more dominant. Optimum design algorithm based on nonlinear finite element analysis for a racing motor boat was developed and coded to ANSYS, and its applicability for actual structural design was verifed.

  • A variety of game algorithms have been proposed in recent years. Racing games using these new algorithms have greatly improved compared to those in the past. According to the analysis of racing games done by wheelgamer.com, a website that specializes in racing games, cars are the most common subject in mainstream racing games. These results show there are very few racing games using special subjects such as boats. This paper proposes a method to develop a realistic boat racing game using the Buoyont Force, beyond the limitation of typical racing games that are restricted to cars. A Material Editor based on Unreal Engine 4.12 is used to manifest the Dynamic Material of realistic ocean water. Blueprint, a visual scripting function, is used to materialize buoyancy which allows the boat to move freely along the waves.

  • The simulation results of a small racing boat racing in steady wind and encountering waves are investigated by Nakato & Ha. The simulation of the race running is realized by referring the measured data of boats and the motions are described by a set of equations of motion in six degree of freedom as generals used in the aerodynamics. In this report, Nakato & Ha's motion equations are modified by equipping the flaps to generate the lift. The flaps of the racing boat could restrain considerably the boat from capsizing caused by superposed external disturbances, wind and encountering waves.

  • A light-weight cantilever type towing carriage was devised and installed in the towing tank at Seoul National University. Wireless measurement devices were also provided for appropriate data acquisition during high-speed towing tests. With the new carriage system, a series of model tests were performed to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of the racing boat in the towing tank and the resistance test results had sufficient accuracy so that they could be used in the development of a high speed planning hull.

  • In this paper a study on the construction of a solar boat prototype is presented. Basic components of solar boats and the construction of a simple solar boat prototype by undergraduate students are described. Main purposes of this study are to examine the feasibility of developing commercial solar boats and to evaluate the effect of solar boat construction on the education of students. A low-cost solar boat prototype is constructed by assembling parts available in the market or laboratory. From the prototype construction experience, students obtained basic knowledge on the design and construction of commercial or racing solar boats. In addition, it is shown that the construction of a solar boat can be au effective educational program to expose students to practical multidisciplinary study involving naval architecture, ocean engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical and electronics engineering.
