  • In this study, the method is proposed, which enable us to noninvasively assess baroreflex sensitivity through the closed-loop feedback modle between RR flucturarion and arterial blood pressure fluctuation. The proposed indexes of baroreflex sensitivity, BRS$_{LF}$와 BRS$_{HF}$ are calculated by the modulus (or gain) of the transfer function between fluctuatuons in blood pressure and RR interval in the LF band HF band, where the coherence is more than 0.5 to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, it is applied to various cardiovascular variability signals obtained form subjects under the submaximal ecericse on bicycle ergometner. In result it is concluded that the proposed method can noninvasively assess the baroreflex sensitivity.ty.

  • This study identified heart response of participants while listening to sounds which have 1/f fluctuations with exponent ${\alpha}$ gradient. The participants were engaged in emotional stress work. Prior studies related to 1/f fluctuation sound have reported that sound source can alleviate psychological and physiological state of users. Subjects of this study were exposed to sound with three levels of ${\alpha}$ gradient. Heart response of subjects were measured with Photoplethysmography(PPG) sensor simultaneously. The dependent variables of this study were beat per minute(BPM), very low frequency percent of pulse rate variability (VLF percent), the standard deviation of all normal RR intervals (SDNN), and high frequency power(HF power). Subject showed arousal response when exposed to sound with exponent ${\alpha}$ gradient of 3 whereas the sound with exponent ${\alpha}$ gradient of 1 and 2 resulted in relax effect. The characteristic of 1/f fluctuation sounds can be applied to alleviate stress for employers under emotional labor.

  • Purpose : The purposes of this study were to determine short- and long-term fractal correlation behavior of heart rates during daily activity in patients with neurocardiogenic syncope. Methods : Twenty five patients with histories of neurocardiogenic syncope episodes were included. Their analogue 24h ambulatory Holter electrocardiograms were analyzed. The tape was digitized and the digitized electrocardiograms were partioned into sections of one hour. Then their RR intervals were measured and 20,000 points of RRI were used. To quantify the fractal correlation behavior, we employed the detrended fluctuation analysis, and short-term($n{\leq}16$, ${\alpha}_1$) and long-term(n>16, ${\alpha}_2$) fractal scaling exponents were calculated. Results : When compared to control, 24-hour average values of ${\alpha}_1$ and all ${\alpha}_1$ values at quarters of each day were significantly higher in patients with syncope. On the contrary, their 24-hour average value of ${\alpha}_2$ and all ${\alpha}_2$ values at quarters of each day were lower in patients with syncope. However, statistical significances were found in 24-hour average value of ${\alpha}_2$ and in ${\alpha}_2$ value at MN-6AM. Conclusion : In the syncope patients with neurocardiogenic syncope, short-term fractal scaling exponents of RR interval was significantly high throughout the day. Therefore, their RR intervals were smoother in the short term scale and had a tendency to continue in the same direction of increase or decrease, which may contribute to persistent decrease in heart rate during a syncopal attack.

  • In this paper, the method is proposed, which enables us to assess baroreflex sensitivity noninvasively through the closed-loop feedback model between RR fluctuation and arterial blood pressure fluctuation, which are obtained in blood low signals. The proposed indexes of baroreflex sensitivity, $BRS_{LF}$ and $BRS_{HF}$, are calculated by the modulus(or gain) of the transfer unction between two fluctuations above in LF band and HF band, where the coherence is more than 0.5. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, it is applied to blood low signals obtained from subjects at tilt angles of $0^{\circ},\;45^{\circ},\;90^{\circ}$ and $0^{\circ}$ successively. In result, it is concluded that the proposed method enables us to assess baroreflex sensitivity noninvasively.

  • Pasture composed of about 30% botanical composition of white clover (Trijolium repem L.) is desirable in its productivity and quality. To get information on maintaining its productivity in the pasture, the experiment was canied out to determine the effect of infrequent, frequent defoliation or their alternation on change of its harvest yield and growth. Individual plants of Regal, Louisiana S-1, Grasslands Huia and Aberystwyth S184 were grown in 22cm plastic pot containing a 2 : 1 : 1 soil : sand : Peat moss mixture for 27 days after transplanting 50day seedlings raised on 3cm pots, and then all their fully expanded leaves are removed. Defoliation treatments were forced every 1 (CC, frequent), 4 week (RR, infrequent) or their alternations (CR, RC) after 8 weeks from the removal. To analyze the treatment effects, plants were sampled on 0 (the removal day), 4, 8, 12 and 16 weeks after the removal and seperated to leaves, petioles, stolons and roots. Each harvest yield of infrequent defoliation (RR) was higher than that of frequent defoliation (CC). Their alternations (RC, CR), however, forced fluctuation of the yield according to defoliation interval. Fraction weights from their altemations showed intermediate ones of infrequent and Frequent defoliation whose weights did the similar result to their harvest yields. Fraction and total dry weights per plant, shoot/root ratio were changed by relative span of defoliation interval, which resulted from the weights of leaves and petioles, removed parts. Root and total dry weight per plant of Regal were greater than the other cultivm in infrequent defoliation interval regardless of continuous or alternations. Productivity of white clover in pasture, therefore, can be controlled by alternation of infrequent and frequent defoliation or reverse.

  • We have developed a device for recording biological data by inserting three electrodes and a needle with an angular velocity sensor into the moth for the purpose of measuring the electromyogram of the flapping and the corresponding lift force. With this measurement, it is possible to evaluate the moth-physiological function of moths, and the amount of pesticides that insects are exposed to (currently LD50-based standards), especially the amount of chronic low-concentration exposure, can be reduced the dose. We measured and recorded 2-channel electromyography (EMG) and angular velocity corresponding to pitch angle (pitch-like angle) associated with wing flapping for 100 sweet potato hawkmoths (50 females and 50 males) with the animals suspended and constrained in air. Overall, the angular velocity and amplitude of EMG signals demonstrated high correlation, with a correlation coefficient of R = 0.792. In contrast, the results of analysis performed on the peak-to-peak (PP) EMG intervals, which correspond to the RR intervals of ECG signals, indicated a correlation between ΔF fluctuation and angular velocity of R = 0.379. Thus, the accuracy of the regression curve was relatively poor. Using a DC amplification circuit without capacitive coupling as the EMG amplification circuit, we confirmed that the baseline changes at the gear change point of wing flapping. The following formula gives the lift provided by the wing: angular velocity × thoracic weight - air resistance - (eddy resistance due to turbulence). In future studies, we plan to attach a micro radio transmitter to the moths to gather data on potential energy, kinetic energy, and displacement during free flight for analysis. Such physiological functional evaluations of moths may alleviate damage to insect health due to repeated exposure to multiple agrochemicals and may lead to significant changes in the toxicity standards, which are currently based on LD50 values.
