This experiment was conducted to elucidate the effect of plant growth regulators (PGR) on the root -mat formation of infant seedling (8- to 10-day-old seedling) of rice in machine transplanting. The rice seeds of Odaebyeo were socked in water with different concentrations of PGRs for 48 hours at room temperature. Seeding rate was 220 g per seed tray (30x60x3cm). Metalaxyl (25% wettable powder) was used for a fungicide. Generally, the metalaxyl-treated seeds markedly promoted the root growth of the rice seedling, while tetracy-cle, pachlobutrazol and NTN -821 reduced the seedling height and root length, and thickened the shoot diameter at higher concentation levels. Tetracycle decreased root length of the rice seedlings but increased root number per seedling, and root-mat formation was poor. Whereas, metalaxyl concentrations of 200 and 1,000 ppm markedly increased root length and number of root hairs without decreasing root number, thus root-mat formation was excellent. The optimum concentration of metalaxyl seed treatment to increase the root-mat formation of infant seedling of rice was about 200 ppm. Metalaxyl seed treatment could be advanced one to two days of the duration of root-mat formation compared with control.
Traumatic injuries of the face often involve root fractures especially in anterior teeth. The prognosis and the treatment of the root fracture depend on the extent of the fracture line, general health and patient compliance. This case report outlines a new conservative trial treatment modality to stabilize the maxillary central incisors with horizontal root fracture on the cervical to middle third by fabricating canine guidance to remove loading on the traumatized maxillary central incisors during eccentric movements and thus inducing spontaneous healing of the fractured line between the fragments. Radiographs after thirty months showed adequate healing with no signs of pathological changes including root resorption, ankylosis or displacement. Long term follow-up revealed that vitality, stability and aesthetics were maintained and the patient was satisfied with the outcome.
Pressure root resorption can be observed during the eruption of permanent dentition, especially of the maxillary canines (affecting lateral incisors) and mandibular third molars (affecting mandibular second molars). Since the cause of root resorption of the adjacent affected teeth is evident, treatment simply involves extraction of the impacted tooth. However, there have been few reports on the prognosis of the remaining resorbed tooth, as dentists often choose to extract them when damage due to root resorption is observed. We report a case involving a tooth that was severely resorbed due to pressure from an adjacent impacted tooth. After extraction of the impacted tooth, the remaining tooth retained vital pulp and survived as a functional tooth.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the resorption potential in human permanent teeth by analyzing the frequency and the degree of root resorption as revealed by routine intraoral roentgenograms. The following conclusions were obtained: 1) The distribution of root resorptions was as follows; a) 65.3 per cent were no root resorption. b) 7.0 per cent showed questionable root shortening. c) 25.2 per cent were definite root shortening. d) 2.5 per cent showed very severe resorption. 2) The order of susceptibility of teeth to resorption in this study was consistent with other studies. 3) The maxillary teeth showed a much higher incidence (52.2 per cent) than the mandibular teeth (17.1 per cent) 4) The sex ratio of the sample in this study was 1.3 female to 1 male.
Minimally processed lotus root was stored at 4$^{\circ}C$ followed by dipping in distilled water, 3% ascorbic acid, 1% citric acid, 1% acetic acid, 1% EDTA, 2% lactic acid and 3% malic acid. The weight loss, color, soluble solids, pH, vitamin C and sensory characteristic were measured during storage period. The rate of weight loss decreased in the minimally processed lotus root. ΔL was changed slightly after 1 week storage and 1% acetic acid and 1% EDTA especially retarded a little retardation in browning during storage. Soluble solids was changed slightly, but decreased after 2 week storage in lotus root treated with 2% lactic acid and 3% malic acid. pH increased but vitamin C decreased during storage. The organoleptic quality of lotus root treated 1% EDTA showed the best by sensory evaluation.
A primary goal of periodontal therapy is the creation of root surfaces that are free of plaque and calculus. It is not yet to be determined whether it is desirable to have a smooth root surface after treatment. It is also not clear what degree of roughness result from different instruments. In the present study various instruments for root surface debridement were evaluated. 20 extracted teeth were utilized, and the teeth were treated with one of the following instrument: Gracey curette, Perio Clean, and piezo ultrasonic device(Setlec, P Max) with general scaler tip, curette-like tip, and diamond tip. 3 dimensional planimetric device(Accura) was used to evaluate the average surface roughness. It was demonstrated hand and power-driven instruments did not have a significant difference in roughness of the root surface following instrumentation. And ultrasonic scaler tip tended to make a most smooth surface than other instruments. The possible reasons of the result were discussed.

As one of the developmental disturbances in shape of teeth, an accessory root may involve any teeth, but has very rare frequency in the deciduous teeth. Because it is possible to diagnose the accessory root only by use of the radiographs, it is important to detect this root early by carefully examining the radiographs. The accessory root produces several problems such as abnormal exfoliation of deciduous teeth, eruption abnormality of successive permanent teeth, infection due to residual root during tooth extraction, and incomplete pulp treatment, and therefore it is necessary to have a continuous follow check-up to prevent these problems.
Most parts of alfalfa plant have been reported to contain autotoxic substances that inhibit seed germination and early seedling growth, however, the chemical(s) is not still studied much. Effect of seed leachates of 'Vernal' alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) was evaluated for inhibition of alfalfa germination and root growth through bioassay. Alfalfa seeds were extracted in 1 L deionized water for 1 h after soaking and the leachates caused to reduce root length of alfalfa significantly as the soaking time increased. Crude seeds at 4 g L$L^{-1}$ exudated autotoxins that reduce significantly root length by 34 % compared to the control, when the seeds soaked in deionized water for 24 h. However, the extracts did not affect final germination as well as speed of germination. Extracts from ground seeds significantly reduced speed of germination (GT 50) and root length. The results indicate that release of autotoxic substances from seeds during seed imbibition was increased with increase of soaking time and seed amount, and that autotoxicity was more occurred in ground seeds than in crude seeds.
Proximate composition, minerals and fatty acid in dried chicory root (moisture content 7.0%) are analyzed and subsequent results are as follows: Crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, total sugar and ash content in chicory root are 8.6%, 1.6 %, 6.9%, 58.5% and 4.2%, respectively. Mineral content of Ca, P, Fe, Mg and Si in the root are 1,560, 180, 10,600 and 180 mg%, respectively. Other minerals such as K, Na, Al, Zn, Ag, Cu and Ti are also determined. Unsaturated fatty acid content in total fat of the root is 65.4%, Particularly high in linoleic acid. Uridine-5'-diphospho-glucose, as sole nucleotide-sugar in the root, was detected.
Extradural meningiomas are relatively rare and those arising from spinal root are even rarer. Recently, a case of extradural meningioma arising from a spinal nerve root was surgically treated in our institution. This patient was a 19-year-old female presented with paraparesis and paresthesia. The mass was compressing the spinal cord at the level of fourth thoracic spine, and it was extended to the nerve root. At operation it was found to be originated from the fourth thoracic spinal nerve root. After removal of the tumor, the neurologic symptom and sign were recovered completely. Histoligic examination of tumor revealed as transitional type of meningioma.
