  • The fatigue of back muscle in the repetitive lifting motion was studied using multiple parameters(FFT_MDF, RMS, 2C, NT) in this study. Recent developments in the time-frequency analysis procedures to compute the IMDF(instantaneous median frequency) were utilized to overcome the nonstationarity of EMG signal using Cohen-Posch distribution. But the above method has a lot of computation time because of its complexity. So, in this study, FFT_MDF(median frequency estimation based on FFT) algorithm was used for median frequency estimation of back muscle EMG signal during muscle work in uniform velocity portion of lumbar movement. The analysis period of EMG signal was determined by using the run test and lumbar movement angle in dynamic task, such as lifting. Results showed that FFT_MDF algorithm is well suited for the estimation of back muscle fatigue from the view point of computation time. The negative slope of a regression line fitted to the median frequency values of back muscle EMG signal was taken as an indication of muscle fatigue. The slope of muscle fatigueness with FFT_MDF method shows the similarity of 77.8% comparing with CP_MDF(median frequency estimation based on Cohen Posch distribution) method.

  • A direct numerical simulation is performed to analyze the effects of a localized time-periodic blowing on a turbulent boundary layer flow at R $e_{+}$=300. Main emphasis is placed on the blowing frequency effect on near-wall turbulent flow structures at downstream. Wall-normal velocity on a spanwise slot is varied periodically at different frequencies (0.004$\leq$ $f^{+}$$\leq$0.080). The amplitude of periodic blowing is $A^{+}$=0.5 in wall nit, which corresponds to the value of $v_{rms}$ at $y^{+}$=15 without blowing. The frequency responses are scrutinized by examining the phase or time-averaged turbulent statistics. The optimal frequency ( $f^{+}$=0.03) is observed, where maximum increase in Reynolds shear stress, streamwise vorticity fluctuations and energy redistribution occurs. The phase-averaged stretching and tilting term are investigated to analyze the increase of streamwise vorticity fluctuations which are closely related to turbulent coherent structures. It is found that the difference between PB and SB at a high blowing frequencies is negligible.e.e.

  • Effect of computational domain size in simulating of periodic obstacle flow has been investigated for the flow past tube banks. Reynolds number, defined by freestream velocity ($U_{\infty}$) and cylinder diameter (d), was fixed as 200, and center-to-center distance (P) as 1.5d. In-line square array and staggered square array were considered. Drag coefficient, lift coefficient and Strouhal number were calculated depending on domain size. Circular cylinders were implemented on a Cartesian grid system by using an immersed boundary method. Boundary condition is periodic in both streamwise and lateral directions. Previous studies in literature often use a square domain with a side length of P, which contains only one cylinder. However, this study reveals that the domain size is improper. Especially, RMS values of flow-induced forces are most sensitive to the domain size.

  • The three main physiological functions of nose are air-conditioning, filtering and smelling. Knowledge of airflow characteristics in nasal cavities is essential to understand the physiological and pathological aspects of nasal breathing. Several studies have utilized physical models of the healthy nasal cavity to investigate the relationship between nasal anatomy and airflow. In our laboratory, there have been a series of experimental investigations on the nasal airflow in normal and deformed nasal cavity models by PIV under both constant and periodic flow conditions. In this time, airflow inside normal nasal cavity is investigated numerically by the FVM general purpose code. The comparisons with PIV measurement are appreciated. Heat and humidity transfer is dealt numerically. Dense CT data and careful treatment of model surface under the ENT doctor’s advice provide more sophisticated cavity models for both PIV experiment and numerical grid system. Average and RMS velocity distributions have been obtained for inspirational and expirational nasal. Temperature distribution, heat and humidity transfer through the mucosa are obtained.

  • A direct numerical simulation of a spatially-developing turbulent boundary layer is performed to examine the characteristics of wall pressure fluctuations after the sudden application of wall blowing or suction. The uniform blowing or suction is given by the wall-normal velocity through a spanwise slot at the wall. The response of wall pressure fluctuations to uniform blowing or suction is analyzed by computing the turbulence statistics and frequency spectra. It is found that wall pressure fluctuations are more affected by blowing than by suction. The large elongated structure of wall pressure fluctuations is observed near the maximum location of $(p_w)_{rms}$ for blowing. The convection velocities for blowing increase with increasing the streamwise location after the slot. For both blowing and suction, the small scale of wall pressure fluctuations reacts in a short downstream distance to the spanwise slot, whereas the large scale recovers slowly in a farther downstream.

  • Airflow in the nasal cavity of a normal Korean adult is investigated experimentally by tomographic PIV measurement. Knowledge of airflow characteristics in nasal cavities is essential to understand the physiology and pathology aspects of nasal breathing. Several studies have utilized physical models of the healthy nasal cavity to investigate the relationship between nasal anatomy and airflow. All of these researches on nasal airflow are under the condition of constant flow-rate. In this study, nasal cavity flow with the physiological period is investigated by tomographic PIV, for the first time. A pumping system that can produce the periodic flow is created. Thanks to a new method for the model casting by a combination of the rapid prototyping and curing of clear silicone, a transparent rectangular box containing the complex nasal cavity can be made for PIV, The CBC PIV algorithm is used for analysis. Phase-averaged mean and RMS velocity distributions are obtained for inspirational and expiration nasal airflows. The comparison with the constant flow case is appreciated. There exist many flow patterns depending on each phase.

  • Sinusoidal wavy channel is one of the most commonly used devices in the industry for achieving mixing and heat transfer. Here we report on results obtained from the DNS of flow inside the wavy channel performed using the finite volume technique. As a primary stage to obtain the optimal design for heat transfer and mixing, this study observed the basic flow structures in a wavy channel. The mass flow rate is kept constant with friction Reynolds number of $Re_{\tau}$ = 140 . Time- and space-averaged and instantaneous flow fields are illustrated to observe the flow structures. Although the direct comparison of results between turbulent wavy and flat channel is somehow difficult due to the different flow phenomena derived from different configuration, here the mean streamwise velocity and RMS of velocities at same $Re_{\tau}$ of two different channels are compared. The basic difference between wavy and flat channel flow is the existence of small scale wall vortices along the walls in a wavy channel. These vortices make flow more complex, which will accompany the increase of heat transfer, pressure drop and drag.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of three rotational jump conditions (standing jump, left rotational jump and right rotational jump) on stability through center of pressure (COP) and EMG variables analysis. Method: A total of 16 college students (age: 24.13 ± 7.17 years, height: 169.24 ± 8.23 cm, weight: 65.65 ± 13.88 kg) participated in this study. The study used wireless two COP plates and wireless eight channel EMG. The analyized variables were 11 variables for COP and RMS for EMG, which were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance with repeated measures according to three rotational jump conditions. Results: Among the COP variables, left rotational jump (LRJ) and right rotational jump (RRJ) were larger than standing jump (SJ) for left and right amplitude, area, total displacement, and average velocity for both feet among the variables of COP, and for area of the left foot, RRJ was larger than that of SJ. Among the EMG variables, there was no statistical difference between the muscle activations, but the muscle activity was significantly higher in the order of RRJ, LRJ, and SJ according to direction of rotation. Conclusion: Although the results of COP and EMG were not consistent through this study, it can be expected that the differences in COP was due to the amount of rotation during rotational jump-landing in the left and right directions, and that the EMG is determined by the lateral movements required for rotation.

  • In the one-dimensional thermal-hydraulic (TH) codes, a subcooled boiling model to predict the void fraction profiles in a vertical channel consists of wall heat flux partitioning, the vapor condensation rate, the bubbly-to-slug flow transition criterion, and drift-flux models. Model performance has been investigated in detail, and necessary refinements have been incorporated into the Safety and Performance Analysis Code (SPACE) developed by the Korean nuclear industry for the safety analysis of pressurized water reactors (PWRs). The necessary refinements to models related to pumping factor, net vapor generation (NVG), vapor condensation, and drift-flux velocity were investigated in this study. In particular, a new NVG empirical correlation was also developed using artificial neural network (ANN) techniques. Simulations of a series of subcooled flow boiling experiments at pressures ranging from 1 to 149.9 bar were performed with the refined SPACE code, and reasonable agreement with the experimental data for the void fraction in the vertical channel was obtained. From the root-mean-square (RMS) error analysis for the predicted void fraction in the subcooled boiling region, the results with the refined SPACE code produce the best predictions for the entire pressure range compared to those using the original SPACE and RELAP5 codes.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate how much the motility of affected and unaffected lower limb respectively would have effects on their ambulation through comparing the difference between their affected and unaffected lower limb and studying the correlation between such difference and their ambulation. In addition, the study also intends to find out remedial measures suitable for improving their ambulation with relevant physical treatment. To do this, a quantitative electromyogram(QEMG) test was done to both quadriceps and hamstring of affected and unaffected lower limb so as to yield IP values. Based on such IP values, RMS(root mean square) values as the total sum of IP values were found with QEMG analysis system (made by Medelec Co.) and then the ambulation depending on the difference in muscular strength were analyzed by ink-foot print method as well as the corresponding statistics were processed by T-test through SPSS. The effect of differences in muscular strength of quadriceps in affected and unaffected limb of hemiplegic patients on their ambulation was also different in each element of ambulation. However, there was not any statistically significant difference (p>.05). The differences in muscular strength of hamstring in unaffected limbs of hemiplegic patients only affect stride length. It was statistically significant. The effect of difference in muscular strength of the hamstring in affected limb of hemiplegic patients on their ambulation was very different between strong and weak group in terms of walking velocity, step per minute, stride and step length, showing statistically significant difference(p<.05). Although there was a difference in the step length of the affected limb, it was not statistically significant(p>.05). For the unaffected hamstring, there were significant differences of stride length between in unaffected limb and in affected limb. For the affected hamstring, there were also significant differences in walking velocity, step per minute, stride and step length. Besides, it was found that the difference of the muscular strength between strong and weak group was at the highest. Thus, the effect of difference in muscular strength on ambulatory factors such as walking velocity, step per minute, stride and step length did not show any statistical significance but differences in affected and unaffected quadriceps. However, it was found that both the difference of stride in unaffected hamstring and the difference of all ambulatory factors except from step length with affected limb had effects on ambulation depending upon muscular strength.
