Compression of Multispectral Images (멀티 스펙트럴 영상들의 압축)

  • This paper is an overview of research contributions by the authors to the use of compression techniques to handle high resolution, multi-spectral images. Originally developed in the remote sensing context, the same techniques are here applied to food and medical images. The objective is to point out the potential of this kind of processing in different contexts such as remote sensing, food monitoring, and medical imaging and to stimulate new research exploitations. Compression is based on the simple assumption that it is possible to find out a relationship between pixels close one each other in multi-spectral images it translates to the possibility to say that there is a certain degree of correlation within pixels belonging to the same band in a close neighbourhood. Once found a correlation based on certain coefficient on one band, the coefficients of this relationship are, in turn, quite probably, similar to the ones calculated in one of the other bands. Based upon this second observation, an algorithm was developed, able to reduce the number of bit/pixel from 16 to 4 in satellite remote sensed multi-spectral images. A comparison is carried out between different methods about their speed and compression ratio. As reference it was taken the behaviour of three common algorithms, LZW (Lempel-Ziv-Welch), Huffman and RLE (Run Length Encoding), as they are used in common graphic format such as GIF, JPEG and PCX. The Presented methods have similar results in both speed and compression ratio to the commonly used programs and are to be preferred when the decompression must be carried out on line, inside a main program or when there is the need of a custom made compression algorithm.

Safety Impacts of Red Light Enforcement on Signalized Intersections (교차로 신호위반 단속카메라 설치가 차량사고에 미치는 영향)

  • The frequency and severity of traffic accidents related to signalized intersections in urban areas have been more serious than those in both arterial segments and crosswalks. Especially, traffic accidents involved with injuries and fatalities have caused by traffic signal violations within intersections. Therefore, many countries including Korea have installed the red light enforcement camera (RLE) to reduce traffic accidents associated with the traffic signal violation. Meanwhile, many methodologies have been studied in terms of safety impacts estimation of red light enforcement, which, however, cannot be easy to conduct. In this study, safety impacts was estimated for intersections of Chicago downtown area using SPF models and EB approach. As a result, for all crash types and target traffic accident types such as "angle", "rear end", "sideswipe in the same and other directions", "turn", and "head on", fatal crashes were reduced by 26% and 38%. However, RLE may increase property-demage-only-crashes by 3.23% and 1.16%, respectively.

REMOTELY SENSEDC IMAGE COMPRESSION BASED ON WAVELET TRANSFORM (Wavelet 변화을 이용한 우리별 수신영상 압축기법)

  • In this paper, we present an image compression algorithm that is capable of significantly reducing the vast mount of information contained in multispectral images. The developed algorithm exploits the spectral and spatial correlations found in multispectral images. The scheme encodes the difference between images after contrast/brightness equalization to remove the spectral redundancy, and utilizes a two-dimensional wavelet trans-form to remove the spatial redundancy. The transformed images are than encoded by hilbert-curve scanning and run-length-encoding, followed by huffman coding. We also present the performance of the proposed algorithm with KITSAT-1 image as well as the LANDSAT MultiSpectral Scanner data. The loss of information is evaluated by peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and classification capability.

  • 현재 인터넷이 생활의 일부로 자리함으로써 인터넷을 통해 수많은 멀티미디어의 교환이 발생하며, 많은 멀티미디어 서비스가 이루어지고 있다. 멀티미디어 서비스를 제공함에 있어 최근 저작권 관리 및 보호의 필요성이 대두되고 있다. 이에 따라 멀티미디어 데이터에 대한 암호기술 개발에 많은 연구가 진행되고 있으며 카오스 사상에 기반 한 암호화 연구가 최근 연구 추세이다. 본 논문은 MPEG(Moving Picture Experts Group) 인코딩 과정에서 1차원 카오스 사상(Map)을 이용하여 인트라 블록을 암호화하는 새로운 방법을 제안하고자 한다. 본 제안 시스템은 MPEG 구조 기반으로 CKD(Chaotic Key Distributor)를 이용하여 확장된 키 값으로 인트라 블록의 0이 아닌 DCT(Discrete Cosine Transform) 계수를 암호화 하는 방법이다. MPEG 인코딩 과정중 DCT 계수는 양자화를 통해 손실이 발생하더라도 비교적 많은 0값을 생성한다. 이는 RLE(Run Length Encoding) 과정에서 압축 효과를 높일 수 있다. 제안하는 방법은 영상 손실을 감수하고 수행한 양자화 과정의 효과를 유지하기 위하여 0이 아닌 DCT 계수만을 암호화 한다. 실험 결과 원본과 암호화된 MPEG의 크기의 변화는 매우 적으며, 인코딩 시간 또한 큰 차이를 보이지 않았다.

Engine Friction Reduction Through Liner Rotation (회전 라이너를 이용한 엔진 마찰저감)

  • Cylinder liner rotation is a new concept for reducing piston assembly friction in the internal combustion engine. The purpose of cylinder liner rotation is to reduce the occurrence of boundary and mixed lubrication friction in the piston assembly. This paper reports the results of experiments to quantify the potential of the rotating liner engine. A GM Quad-4 SI engine was converted to single cylinder operation and modified for cylinder liner rotation. The hot motoring method was used to compare the friction loss between the baseline engine and the rotating liner engine. Additionally, tear-down tests were used to measure the contribution of each engine component to the total friction torque. The cycle-averaged motoring torque of the RLE represents a $23\~31\%$ friction reduction compared to the baseline engine for hot motoring tests. Through tear down tests, it was found that the piston assembly friction of the baseline engine is reduced from $90\%$ at 1200 rpm to $71\%$ at 2000 rpm through liner rotation.

Antimicrobial and Antioxidant Activity of Hot Water and Ethanol Extracts of Ricinus communis L. Leaves and Fruits (피마자(Ricinus communis L.) 잎과 열매의 열수(熱水) 및 에탄올 추출물의 항균 활성과 항산화 효능)

  • RFW and RFE of castor fruit selected as part of the development of natural antimicrobials and antioxidants yielded 15.8% and 18.4% respectively. In the results of measuring the antimicrobial activity through paper disc method, the antimicrobial activity of castor fruits in ethanol extracts appeared. Especially, the activity was excellent in P. aeruginosa and S. aureus, and antimicrobial activity of C. was 1.5mm up to 16 hours. However, the proliferation of C. was observed again after 24 hours. In the MIC experiment results of RFE, S. aureus and P. aeruginosa showed 96% and 93% of antimicrobial activity, respectively. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of RLW and castor leaf ethanol extract showed $1.8{\pm}0.6%$ and $2.1{\pm}0.7%$ free radical scavenging activity at $1000({\mu}g/m{\ell})$. This study is expected to provide basic data for the development of antimicrobial agents and antioxidants using natural products.

A Development of JPEG-LS Platform for Mirco Display Environment in AR/VR Device. (AR/VR 마이크로 디스플레이 환경을 고려한 JPEG-LS 플랫폼 개발)

  • This paper presents the design of a JPEG-LS codec for lossless image compression from AR/VR device. The proposed JPEG-LS(: LosSless) codec is mainly composed of a context modeling block, a context update block, a pixel prediction block, a prediction error coding block, a data packetizer block, and a memory block. All operations are organized in a fully pipelined architecture for real time image processing and the LOCO-I compression algorithm using improved 2D approach to compliant with the SBT coding. Compared with a similar study in JPEG-LS, the Block-RAM size of proposed STB-FLC architecture is reduced to 1/3 compact and the parallel design of the predication block could improved the processing speed.

International Case Study and Strategy Proposal for IUCN Red List of Ecosystem(RLE) Assessment in South Korea (국내 IUCN Red List of Ecosystem(생태계 적색목록) 평가를 위한 국제 사례 연구와 전략 제시)

  • The IUCN Red List of Ecosystems serves as a global standard for assessing and identifying ecosystems at high risk of biodiversity loss, providing scientific evidence necessary for effective ecosystem management and conservation policy formulation. The IUCN Red List of Ecosystems has been designated as a key indicator (A.1) for Goal A of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The assessment of the Red List of Ecosystems discerns signs of ecosystem collapse through specific criteria: reduction in distribution (Criterion A), restricted distribution (Criterion B), environmental degradation (Criterion C), changes in biological interaction (Criterion D), and quantitative estimation of the risk of ecosystem collapse (Criterion E). Since 2014, the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems has been evaluated in over 110 countries, with more than 80% of the assessments conducted in terrestrial and inland water ecosystems, among which tropical and subtropical forests are distributed ecosystems under threat. The assessment criteria are concentrated on spatial signs (Criteria A and B), accounting for 68.8%. There are three main considerations for applying the Red List of Ecosystems assessment domestically: First, it is necessary to compile applicable terrestrial ecosystem types within the country. Second, it must be determined whether the spatial sign assessment among the Red List of Ecosystems categories can be applied to the various small-scale ecosystems found domestically. Lastly, the collection of usable time series data (50 years) for assessment must be considered. Based on these considerations, applying the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems assessment domestically would enable an accurate understanding of the current state of the country's unique ecosystem types, contributing to global efforts in ecosystem conservation and restoration.
