  • The rate constants for the hydrolysis of styryldiphossphine oxide(SDPO) were deter-mined by ultraviolet visible spectrophotometric method and rate equation which can be applied over wide pH ranges was obtained. On the basis of pH-rate profile, hydrolysis product analysis, general base catalysis and substituent effect, a plausible hydrolysis mechanism is proposed : Below pH 4.5, the hydrolysis reaction is pro-ceeded by the attack of water to carbocation after protonaticentration of hydroxide ion.

  • Compound K (CK) is a final metabolite of panaxadiol ginsenosides. Although panax ginseng is known to have anti-diabetic activity, the active ingredient is not yet fully identified. Therefore, it would be interesting to know whether and how CK has an anti-diabetic activity. First, insulin secretion-stimulating activity of CK was examined using RIN-m5F cell line and primary cultured islets. CK enhanced the insulin secretion in a concentration dependent manner. This effect, however, was almost completely abolished in the presence of diazoxide, $K^+$ channel opener, indicating that the insulin secretion-stimulating activity of CK is presumably due to blockade of ATP sensitive $K^+$ channel. In addition, effects of CK on gene expressions of hepatic enzymes (phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase[PEPCK], glucose-6-phos-phatase[G6Pase]) and on adipocyte differentiation in H4IIE and 3T3-Ll cells, respectively, were examined. CK suppressed the induction of PEPCK and G6Pase mRNA expressions under the dexamethasone/cAMP stimulation condition. CK also reduced the $PPAR-{\gamma}$ mRNA expression and triglyceride accumulation in a dose dependent manner as compared to the control. The present study suggests that CK deserves to examine whether it shows an anti-diabetic activity in animal and human studies.

  • The concentration of Strontium-90 in liquid whole milk produced in Korea were measured during past four years. The samples of milk were purchased from dairies in Seoul. Strontium-90 was analysed radiochemically and the amount of stable calcium was also determined. Radioactivity of Yttrium-90 was counted in low background beta counter which has the background of 1.38 cpm. The concentrations of Strontium-90 in the milk are 25.1 PCi $^{90}Sr$/g.Ca in 1965, 26.8 PCi $^{90}Sr$/g. Ca in 1966, 13.7 PCi 90Sr/g.Ca in 1967 and 18.2 PCi $^{90}Sr$/g.Ca in 1968 in annual average. The concentrations of Strontium-90 in the milk of 1967 and of 1968 were decreased approximately compared with the values of 60% 1965 and 1966. From the results we can see that Strontium-90 concentrations in the milk vary roughly proportionally with the specific activity of fallout. Considering on the safety problems, the Strontium-90 levels in the milk produced in Korea were far below the maximum permissible level recommended by ICRP.

  • Middle-sized $CO_2$ water heater having compressor power of 7.45 kW was designed, and its performances were experimentally tested. Besides, optimum design of the $CO_2$ water heater was conducted by cycle simulation. When ambient temperature of $7^{\circ}C$ and hot water outlet temperature of $80^{\circ}C$ the $CO_2$ water heater showed the COP of 3.2. As hot water temperature increased the COP is getting decreased due to significant increase of compressor power consumption compared to increasing rate of heating capacity. When ambient temperature increased from $-3^{\circ}C$ to $12^{\circ}C$ the COP increased by 30%. The optimum components design of a gas cooler, an internal heat exchanger, and an evaporator were conducted, and the experimental correlation between amount of EEV opening and ambient temperature, and hot water temperature was suggested.

  • The influences of stress triaxiality on ductile fracture have been investigated for various specimens and structures. With respect to a transferability issue, recently, the interests on local approaches reflecting micromechanical specifics are increased again due to rapid progress of computational environments. In this paper, the applicability of the local approaches has been examined through a series of finite element analyses incorporating modified GTN and Rousselier models as well as fracture toughness tests. The ductile crack growth of nuclear carbon steels is assessed to verify the transferability among compact tension (CT) specimens with different in-plane size. At first, the basic material constants were calibrated for standard CT specimens and used to predict fracture resistance (J-R) curves of larger CT specimens. Then, the in-plane size effects were examined by comparing the numerically estimated J-R curves with the experimentally determined ones. The assessment results showed that the in-plane size effect should be considered for realistic engineering application and the damage models might be used as useful tool for ductile fracture evaluation.

  • This paper presents a new approach for thermal unit commitment (UC) using a differential evolution (DE) algorithm. DE is an effective, robust, and simple global optimization algorithm which only has a few control parameters and has been successfully applied to a wide range of optimization problems. However, the standard DE cannot be applied to binary optimization problems such as UC problems since it is restricted to continuous-valued spaces. This paper proposes binary differential evolution (BDE), which enables the DE to operate in binary spaces and applies the proposed BDE to UC problems. Furthermore, this paper includes heuristic-based constraint treatment techniques to deal with the minimum up/down time and spinning reserve constraints in UC problems. Since excessive spinning reserves can incur high operation costs, the unit de-commitment strategy is also introduced to improve the solution quality. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed BDE, it is applied to largescale power systems of up to 100-units with a 24-hour demand horizon.

  • This paper deals with the effect of the internal sampling frequency and core band down sampling ratio on the overall performance of the MPEG USAC. Here, the internal sampling frequency is the sampling frequency of a signal actually coded. The core band down sampling ratio is the ratio of the width of the core band over that of the coded band. The performance was measured on 6 different test sound sources by the MUSHRA test with 10 subjects. The experiments showed that 1/3 or 1/4 core band down sampling ratio could yield the better performance than the conventional 1/2 ratio, especially at low rates.

  • We investigated the effect of polyelectrolyte types in Layer-by-Layer multilayering and furnish combination on physical properties of paper. Handsheets were made from pulp fibers with different polyelectrolytes composition, and their density, formation, tensile strength, strain, tear strength and burst strength were evaluated. The density of handsheet was slightly decreased by polyelectrolyte multilayering. Formation did not show a significant change, but all mechanical properties were increased by polyelectrolyte multilayering. Remarkable improvement in tensile and tear strengths was obtained when pulp fibers were treated with cationic starch and poly styrene 4-sulfonate. Irrespectively of final ionicity of pulp fiber, tensile index, strain and tear strength of paper could be improved simultaneously by polyelectrolyte multilayering.
