  • Recently, attention has been focused on mixed reality (MR) technology, which provides an experience that can not be realized in reality by fusing virtual information into the real world. Mixed reality has the advantage of having excellent interaction with reality and maximizing immersion feeling. In this paper, we propose a method to acquire a point cloud for the production of mixed reality contents using multiple Depth and RGB camera system.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm that extracts a high-precision 3D skeleton using a model generated using a distributed RGB-D camera. When information about a 3D model is extracted through a distributed RGB-D camera, if the information of the 3D model is used, a skeleton with higher precision can be obtained. In this paper, in order to improve the precision of the 2D skeleton, we find the conditions to obtain the 2D skeleton well using the PCA. Through this, high-quality 2D skeletons are obtained, and high-precision 3D skeletons are extracted by combining the information of the 2D skeletons. Even though this process goes through, the generated skeleton may have errors, so we propose an algorithm that removes these errors by using the information of the 3D model. We were able to extract very high accuracy skeletons using the proposed method.

  • Obstacle avoidance is one of the most important parts of autonomous mobile robot. In this study, we proposed safe and efficient local path planning of robot for obstacle avoidance. The proposed method detects and tracks obstacles using the 3D depth information of an RGB-D sensor for path prediction. Based on the tracked information of obstacles, the paths of the obstacles are predicted with probability circle-based spatial search (PCSS) method and Gaussian modeling is performed to reduce uncertainty and to create the cost function of caution. The possibility of collision with the robot is considered through the predicted path of the obstacles, and a local path is generated. This enables safe and efficient navigation of the robot. The results in various experiments show that the proposed method enables robots to navigate safely and effectively.

  • This paper proposes a method to minimize the error of the Kinect camera sensor by using a random undirected Kalman filter. Kinect cameras, which provide RGB values and depth information, cause nonlinear errors in the sensor, causing problems in various applications such as skeleton detection. Conventional methods have tried to remove errors by using various filtering techniques. However, there is a limit to removing nonlinear noise effectively. Therefore, in this paper, a randomized unscented Kalman filter was applied to predict and update the nonlinear noise characteristics, we next tried to enhance a performance of skeleton detection. The experimental results confirmed that the proposed method is superior to the conventional method in quantitative results and reconstructed images on 3D space.

  • This paper presents a novel feature detection algorithm called depth-hybrid speeded-up robust features (DH-SURF) augmented by depth information in the speeded-up robust features (SURF) algorithm. In the keypoint detection part of classical SURF, the standard deviation of the Gaussian kernel is varied for its scale-invariance property, resulting in increased computational complexity. We propose a keypoint detection method with less variation of the standard deviation by using depth data from a red-green-blue depth (RGB-D) sensor. Our approach maintains a scale-invariance property while reducing computation time. An RGB-D simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) system uses a feature extraction method and depth data concurrently; thus, the system is well-suited for showing the performance of the DH-SURF method. DH-SURF was implemented on a central processing unit (CPU) and a graphics processing unit (GPU), respectively, and was validated through the real-time RGB-D SLAM.

  • Structural supervision on the construction site has been performed based on visual inspection, which is highly labor-intensive and subjective. In this study, the remote technique was developed to improve the efficiency of the measurements on rebar spacing using a 360° camera and reconstructed 3D models. The proposed method was verified by measuring the spacings in reinforced concrete structure, where the twelve locations in the construction site (265 m2) were scanned within 20 seconds per location and a total of 15 minutes was taken. SLAM, consisting of SIFT, RANSAC, and General framework graph optimization algorithms, produces RGB-based 3D and 3D point cloud models, respectively. The minimum resolution of the 3D point cloud was 0.1mm while that of the RGB-based 3D model was 10 mm. Based on the results from both 3D models, the measurement error was from 10.8% to 0.3% in the 3D point cloud and from 28.4% to 3.1% in the RGB-based 3D model. The results demonstrate that the proposed method has great potential for remote structural supervision with respect to its accuracy and objectivity.

  • Multi-floor navigation of a mobile robot requires a technology that allows the robot to safely get on and off the elevator. Therefore, in this study, we propose a method of recognizing the elevator from the current position of the robot and estimating the location of the elevator locally so that the robot can safely get on the elevator regardless of the accumulated position error during autonomous navigation. The proposed method uses a deep learning-based image classifier to identify the elevator from the image information obtained from the RGB-D sensor and extract the boundary points between the elevator and the surrounding wall from the point cloud. This enables the robot to estimate the reliable position in real time and boarding direction for general elevators. Various experiments exhibit the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, we have studied the color compensation method for 3D that enables 3D color presentation similar to 2D. The color compensation method uses the difference of color presentation in 2D and 3D mode. First, the RGB I/O relationship curve was derived in 2D and 3D mode based on the input RGB color bar images. The relationship was modeled in modified power-law forms. Based on the modeling information, we generated color mapping tables, which can be used for compensating the difference of colors. The proposed color mapping block can be added at the output block of a 3DTV system, where the 2D content can be bypassed but the 3D content RGB data can be processed using the color mapping table. The experimental results show that the proposed method improves color presentation of a 3DTV system using a proper color compensation based on 2D presentation.

  • In this paper, we propose a synthesis method of elemental images from Kinect images for 3D integral imaging display. Since RGB images and depth image obtained from Kinect are not able to display 3D images in integral imaging system, we need transform the elemental images in integral imaging display. To do so, we synthesize the elemental images based on the geometric optics mapping from the depth plane images obtained from RGB image and depth image. To show the usefulness of the proposed system, we carry out the preliminary experiments using the two person object and present the experimental results.
