Populations both in the US and worldwide are aging. It is projected that by the year 2030 the population of Americans over 65 will increase to 70 million, more than twice their number in 1998. About one-third of elderly over the age of 65 have debilitating chronic health conditions that greatly impede their activities. Age-associated chronic diseases are believed to be associated with free radicals and the imbalance in antioxidant and oxidative stress contributes to development of several chronic health conditions. Diet and nutrients can have great impact in the health status of elderly. Several factors may contributor to the inadequate consumption of nutrients in elderly, including an inability to chew food adequately, polypharmacy, living along and limited income. Low intake of energy and several micronutrients are common among the elderly. Although overt deficiency of nutrients among the elderly is not common. a recent study showed that while elderly consume more fat, the total energy intake is low among the elderly. Inadequate intake of antioxidant nutrients such as vitamin E in elderly may contribute to the development of chronic health problems. Intake of higher than normal RDA levels of vitamin E for long periods of time has been shown to reduce the risk of many degenerative diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases(CVD) and cancer, and improve immune response in elderly. High intake of other antioxidants is also associated with reduced risk chronic diseases. Dietary antioxidants are abundant in fruits and vegetables. However, due to variety of factors, the elderly may not be able to receive these and other micronutrients through diet. Therefore, supplemental intake of micronutrients in the form of multi vitamins/minerals and/or specific micronutrients is a more practical approach to the maintenance of health status in the elderly.
This paper presents the fabrication of a micro electromagnetic flow sensor for the liquid flow rate measurement. The micro electromagnetic flow sensor has some advantages such as a simple structure, no heat generation, a rapid response and no pressure loss. The principle of the micro electromagnetic flow sensor is based on Faraday's law. If conductive fluid passes through a magnetic field, the electromotive force is generated and detected by two electrodes on the wall of the flow channel. The flow sensor consists of two permanent magnets and a silicon flow channel with two electrodes. The dimension of the flow sensor is $9\;mm\;{\times}\;9\;mm\;{\times}\;1\;mm$. The micro flow channel is mainly fabricated by anisotropic etching of two silicon wafers, and the detection electrodes are fabricated by metal evaporation process. The characteristic of the fabricated flow sensor is obtained experimentally. When the flow rates of water with the conductance of $100-200\;{\mu}S/cm$ are 9.1 ml/min and 62 ml/min, the generated electromotive forces are $261\;{\mu}V$ and 7.3 mV, respectively.
Psychoacoustic characteristics of automobile horns play significant role in resulting subjective evaluation and psychphysiological reactions. However, comparison and differentiation of physiological responses to commercially available horns is a complicated task due to the small contrast in technical features of horns and the influence of such processes as habituation on physiological outcome with the increased number of auditory stimulation trials. In a study on 10 college students, there was performed comparative analysis of reactivity of physiological responses mediated by central and autonomic nervous systems in order to identify the role of habituation on decrement of psychophysiological responsivity and assess the ability to differentiate subjectively most and least preferred, as well as most and least appropriate horns according to physiological manifestations. The EEG and autonomic responses to 7 automobile horns were analyzed during 3 blocks of trials, with varying order of stimuli and changed acoustic parameters of horns in each block. Thus, responses were analyzed for totally 21 trials of auditory stimulation. It was shown that electrodermal and cardiovascular responses have different reactivity patterns to repeated stimulation: skin conductance measures habituated, cardiac reactivity showed no signs of habituation, and the vascular response demonstrated sensitization. The temporal EEG exhibited marked habituation of fast beta band power, while alpha-blocking effect did not habituate during the course of experiment. Differentiation of physiological responses of most and least preferred and appropriate horns was possible in our study, however, some cardiovascular reactivity measures differentiated during the entire course of the experiment, while EEG and electrodermal parameters showed significant differences only during first block of trials, and were later affected by the habituation.
Autonomic and EEG responses were analyzed in 32 college students exposed to visual stimulation with Korean Affective Picture System (KAPS) and 36 students exposed to the International Affective Picture System (IAPS). Cardiac, electrodermal, and electrocortical measures were recorded during 30 sec of viewing affective pictures. The slides intended to elicit basic emotions (fear, anger, surprise, disgust, and sadness) were presented to subjects via Kodak slide-projector. The aim of the study was to differentiate autonomic and EEG responses associated with the same negative valence emotions elicited by KAPS and IAPS stimulation and to identify the influence of cultural relevance on physiological reactivity. The analysis of obtained results revealed significant differences in physiological responsiveness to emotionally negative valence slides from KAPS and IAPS. The typical response profile for all emotions elicited by the KAPS included HR acceleration (except surprise), and increase of electrodermal activity, slow and fast alpha blocking and fast beta power increase in EEG, which was not associated with significant asymmetry (except fast alpha in sadness). Stimulation with the IAPS evoked HR deceleration, specific electrodermal responses with relatively high tonic electrodermal activation, alpha-blocking and fast beta increase, and was accompanied also by theta power increase and marked frontal asymmetry (e.g., fast beta, theta asymmetries in sadness, fast alpha in fear). Physiological responses to fear and anger-eliciting slides from the IAPS were significantly less profound and were accompanied by autonomic and EEG changes more typical for attention rather than negative affect. Higher cardiovascular and electrodermal reactivity to fear emotion observed in the KAPS, e.g., as compared to data with the IAPS as stimuli, can be explained by cultural relevance and higher effectiveness of the KAPS in producing certain emotions such as fear in Koreans.
The Alcoholics Anonymous(AA) program has been known to be effective in many countries in helping alcoholics to stop drinking and to change their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. In this study, we examined AA activities among Korean AA members and measured the self-evaluated physical, social, and mental changes following the entry into the AA program. Out of identified 300 AA members who were attending 18 different AA group meetings at the time of the survey, 207 completed the self-administered questionnaire(response rate of 69.0%). T-test and ANOVA were used to compare the scores of physica(4-items), social(4-items), and menta(10-items) changes according to the level of AA activities. The proportion of the respondents who practiced the 11th step (meditation) or the 12th step (take alcoholics to a meeting after carrying messages) on the regular basis was 66.6% and 37.2%, respectively. The average time spent in meditation per week was $4.8{\pm}5.47$ hours. The length of participation in AA meetings has significantly positive impact on the average score of changes in all the 3 health states; physical(p<.01), social(p<.05), and mental states(p<.01). Also, practicing the 11th step was significantly associated with improvement of social(p<.01) and mental(p<.05), while practicing the 12th step improved only mental states(p<.01). Our findings demonstrated that not only the length of participation in AA meetings but also the practice of regular meditation(11th step) and taking alcoholics to an AA meeting after carrying messages(12th step) are very important for AA members, and lead to great positive changes in physical, social, and mental states following entry into the AA program.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of plant growth retardants (daminozide, chlormequat, hexaconazole, uniconazole, paclobutrazole) and fungicides of triazole chemical (microbutanil, difenoconazole, terbuconazole, bitertanol) on the rooting of 'New Guinea' impatiens cuttings. In both 'Papete' and 'Anguilla', the formation of adventitious roots was promoted by all concentrations of chlormequat, hexaconazole, uniconazole, and paclobutrazole treated. More adventitious roots were formed with hexaconazole, uniconazole, and paclobutrazole than with chlormequat. Length of the longest root and rooting zone decreased at higher concentrations of chlormequat, hexaconazole, uniconazole, and paclobutrazole in 'Papete', while 'Anguilla' showed less responses. In contrast with plant growth retardants, the formation of adventitious roots was remarkably promoted by fungicides of triazole chemical such as microbutanil, difenoconazole, terbuconazole, and bitertanol in 'Pepete' and 'Martinique' impatiens, but was not in 'Pagopago'. However, length of the longest root and rooting zone showed more sensitive response in 'Martinique' and 'Pagopago' than in 'Pepete'. These results suggest that fungicides of triazole chemical can be effectively used for rooting promotion of impatiens cuttings.

The analysis of power spectrum based on linear AR model is applied widely to quantize the response of autonomic nerve noninvasively, In this paper, we estimate the power spectrum density for heartrate variability of the electrocadiogram and pulse wave for short term data(less than two minute), The time series of heart rate variability is obtained from the time interval(RRI, PPI) between the feature point of the electrocadiogram and pulse wave for normal person, The generated time series reconstructed into new time series through polynomial interpolation to apply to the AR mode. The power spectrum density for AR model is calculated by Burg algorithm, After applying AR model, the power spectrum density for heart rate variability of the electrocadiogram and the pulse wave is shown smooth spectrum power at the region of low frequence and high frequence, and that the power spectrum density of electrocadiogram and pulse wave has similar form for same subject.

The purpose of this research was to apply and conduct a class with Gordon’s Creative Problem Solving Method(Synectics) to the area of ’human development and family relations’among male students in a jr. high school. Subject matters which were appropriate for applying Gordon’s Creative Problem Solving method were selected from ’human development and family relations’area, with problem circumstances set to reflect to the highest degree the interests of individuals and families. An 8 hour teaching instructional guide was constructed with $\boxdr$strategy 1$\boxul$of Gordon’s Creative Problem Solving method in order to solve creatively the established problem. This was practically implied to 70 students(each class had 34 and 36 students respectively) in K middle school located in Seoul. The period of this application was for 3 months during March through May of 1999. The perception of this method was examined by the teachers and students through open-ended questions. The record of perception showed that 56 students out of 70(with no response from 5 students) through that the class done by the creativity problem solving method was good. The majority of reasons mentioned for the positive answers were ’being able to receive different thoughts which were unusual of daily life’. In addition the students who participated in the class were able to foster a joint experience which improved their understanding of relationships and sens of community. moreover students who did not do well n the class or were diffident were encouraged to participate which in result showed that there was even an internal effect.
Field experiments of nitrogen application (0, 100, 200, 400, 800kg N/ha year) were carried out to study the nitrogen response of Sudangrass at College Farm, Seoul National Univ., in 1979 and 1980. Dry matter yield and leaf area index increased up to 400kg N/ha in 1979 and 800kg N/ha in 1980. The forage yield of 1980 was less than that of 1979, due to the extraordinarily low temperature and the decreased solar radiation during summer. Total nitrogen contents in forage increased with nitrogen application, but maximum contents were found either 400 or 800kg N levels depend on each cutting stages. Nitrate nitrogen content in forage exceded over 2000 ppm at 800kg N application. Overall percentages of N recovery were below 50% with average 34%. Net assimilation rate and nitrogen use efficiency of Sudangrass were improved in higher temperature and more sunlight condition during regrowth period.
This study was conducted to assess factors associated with the degree of performance of qualify improvement(QI) activities. A mailed questionnaire survey was conducted between September 15 and October 30, 2000, with the staffs being charge of QI at each of the hospitals with 400 beds or greater. Of the 108 hospitals eligible for inclusion in our study, 79 participated, yielding a response rate of 73.1%. After excluding 12 hospitals that did not perform any QI activities, 117 responses from 67 hospitals were used for the analysis. Using the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Criteria(MBNQAC), perceived performance of QI was measured in terms of the improvement of the quality of clinical practice, clinical supporting department, administrative procedure of receiving care, customer satisfaction, efficiency and standardization of work process. Factors evaluated for the association were the extent of QI implementation, compliance to 5 QI principles, participation of hospital CEOs, budget allocation, history of QI, and bed size. Path analysis was performed to assess the relationship between QI performance and these factors. Major findings of this study are as follows. Hospitals showing higher degree of QI implementation (path coefficient=0.5967, p<0.001)) and better compliance with the basic principes of QI(0.5736, p<0.05) tended to achieve better performance. Path analysis results showed that interest and participation of hospital CEOs(0.1954, p<0.05) and compliance with the basic principes of QI(0.4028, p<0.0001) indirectly affected the outcomes of QI by influencing the intermediate variable of the level of QI implementation. This study results suggest that having employees have a good orientation of the basic concept and principes of QI through relevant training be the most important requirement to achieve better outcomes from QI activities. In addition, to educate leaders of hospitals the need of active implementation of QI is important to encourage their participation and draw strong support for QI programs.
