  • A 500Wh class high-speed Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS) driven by a built-in BLDC motor/generator has been designed, which runs from 30000 to 60000rpm nominally. Due to the motor/generator inside, the flywheel rotor made of composites supported by PM/EM hybrid bearing system has a shape of bell or pendulum and thus requires accurate rotordynamic analysis and prediction of its dynamic behavior to secure the operating reliability. Rotordynamic analyses of the flywheel rotor-bearing system revealed that the bell shaped rotor has two conical rigid-body modes in the system operating range and the first conical mode, of which nodal point lies in the radial EM bearing position, can adversely affect the dynamic response of the rotor at the corresponding critical speed. To eliminate the possibility of wild behavior of the rotor, two guide bearings are adopted at the upper end of the rotor and motor/generator. It was also revealed that the EM bearing stiffness if 0.5~1.0E+6 N/m and damping of 2000 Ns/m are favirable for smooth operation of the system around the 2nd critical speed.

  • The rubber wheel-type AGT has two major kinds of bogie; one is the bogie type and the other steering one. Both are important vehicular structure to support the whole running vehicle and passenger loads. This paper deals with the static analysis for the two types of bogie frame subjected to combined external forces, as well as independent ones specified in UIC 515-4. Furthermore, the dynamic analysis is performed under vibrational loading conditions so as to compare dynamic characteristics, Numerical results by using commercial packages, I-DEAS and NASTRAN show that maximum stresses do not exceed the yield strength level of material used for both bogies. From an overall viewpoint of strength, the bogie type turns out to be superior to the steering type except for the case of a lateral loading. It is also observed that the steering type shows a characteristics of low frequency behavior during a course of searching for structurally weak areas to be stiffened. The vibrational fatigue analysis for each bogie frame depends on the loading time history conditions which is applied. Time History Central Database List in the NASTRAN package. Subsequent1y, the fatigue life of bogie type is longer than the steering type.

  • Blister beetles produce cantharidin, which is toxic to people and animals. Cantharidin has been believed to be an aphrodisiac and an abortifacient based on its tendency to cause marked irritation to the genitourinary system leading to priapism in men and pelvic congestion in women for many years. Cantharidin was used by oriental traditional medicine for more than 2000 years. Typical signs related to cantharidin ingestion are gastrointestinal tract and urinary tract irritation, endotoxemia, shock and myocardial dysfunction. Cantharidin is a severe irritant to epithelial linings (gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract, and skin) and develop systemic inflammatory response syndrome. We report a case of corrosive esophagogastritis and acute renal failure by ingestion of cantharidin.

  • Infection with rice blast fungus (Magnaporthe grisea) significantly reduced foliar net photosynthesis (A) of rice cultivars: Ilpoom, Hwasung, and Choochung in greenhouse experiments. By measuring the amount of diseased leaf area with a computer image analysis system, the relation between disease severity (DS) and net photosynthetic rate was curvilinearly correlated (r=0.679). Diseased leaves with 35% blast symptom can be predicted to have a 50% reduction of photosynthesis. The disease severity was linearly correlated (r=0.478) with total chlorophyll (chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b) per unit leaf area(TC). Light use efficiency was reduced by the fungal infection according to the light response curves. However, dark respiration (Rd) did not change after the fungal infection (p=0.526). Since the percent of reduction in photosynthesis greatly exceeded the percent of leaf area covered by blast lesions, loss of photosynthetic tissue on an area basis could not by itself account for the reduced photosynthesis. Quantitative photosynthetic reduction can be partially explained by decreasing TC, but cannot be explained by decreasing Rd. By photosynthesis (A)-internal CO$_2$ concentration (C$_i$ curve analysis, it was suggested that the fungal infection reduced ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) activity, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) regeneration, and inorganic phosphate regeneration. Thus, the reduction of photosynthesis by blast infection was associated with decreased TC and biochemical capacity, which comprises all carbon metabolism after CO$_2$ enters through the stomata.

  • A fluorescent material was accumulated in inoculated leaves showing necrotic local lesions of tobacco plants with N gene, Nicotiana tabacum cvs. Xanthi-nc NN, Samsun NN, Burley 21 and KF 114, and N. glutinosa, and Datura stramonium at the early growth stages by the inoculation of Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). It was identified as a coumarin phytoalexin, scopoletin. Although the material was most prominently produced in TMV-inoculated tobacco leaves with local necrotic lesions, its accumulation was also noted in uninoculated leaves of TMV-inoculated plants. Its accumulation was somewhat greater in high resistance-induced leaves than low resistance-induced and intact leaves. Scopoletin treatment induced the expression of a pathogenesis-related protein, PR-1, prominently at the concentration of 500 or 1000 ${\mu}$g/ml. This suggests that scopoletin is a phytoalexin abundantly accumulating in N gene-containing resistant plants in response to TMV infection, and may be related to hypersensitive responses (HR) and systemic acquired resistance (SAR) in the resistant tobacco plants.

  • Recently, optical pickup actuators have been designed to have structures that extruded lens to decrease their height, because they are used in very thin drive for notebook computers. However, because of discordant and undesirable of forces that are supposed to happen in this design feature, subsidiary resonance such as rolling and pitching mode exert bad influence on actuator. In this paper, we presented force constituents to clarify the cause of subsidiary resonance and proposed new finite element analysis method to calculate force precisely, and performed frequency response analysis to evaluate characteristics of actuators. As a result, we could find out design parameters to diminish the influence of subsidiary resonance. Sample actuators designed with appropriate parameters were fabricated and put to practical tests. Comparing analysis with experimental results, we verified the accuracy of the analysis and the effectiveness of the method presented.

  • 22 dogs (31 eyes) that had treated with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole for tear staining syndrome at Snoopy Pet Clinic from October 2000 to September 2002 were reviewed. Of the 22 dogs, 12 were female and 10 male. Their mean (${\pm}$ SD) age was 3.5 (${\pm}\;1.3$) years. The breeds of the dogs consisted of Maltese (8 dogs), Shih tzu (6 dogs), Poodle (5 dogs), Yorkshire terrier (2 dogs), and Mixed (1 dog). The dogs received 30 mg/kg trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole perorally twice daily for two to six weeks. 26 (19 dogs) of the 31 eyes (22 dogs) recovered completely and did not show relapse at $26{\sim}30$ weeks after treatment. Any complications did not observed. Five eyes of three dogs were not cured. Two eyes (one dogs) of them had not response to medicament and three eyes (two dogs) recurrence but the clinical signs decreased. It was considered that the trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole was effective for the treatment in dogs with tear staining syndrome.

  • This paper proposes a mechanical model to describe the load-deformation responses of the reinforced concrete plate members under service load state. An Analytical method is introduced on the basis of the rotating crack model which considers equilibrium, compatibility conditions, load-strain relationship of cracked member, and constitutive law for materials. The tension stiffening effect in reinforced concrete structures is taken into account by the average tensile stress-strain relationship from the load-strain relationship for the cracked member and the constitutive law for material. The strain compatibility is used to find out the crack direction because the crack direction is an unknown variable in the equilibrium and compatibility conditions. The proposed theory is verified by the numerous experimental data such as the crack direction, moment-steel strain relationship, moment-crack width relationship. The present paper can provide some basis for the provision of the definition of serviceability for plate structures of which reinforcements are deviated from the principal stresses, because the present code defines the serviceability by the deflection, crack control, vibration and fatigue basically for the skeletal members. The proposed theory is applicable to predict the service load state behavior of a variety of reinforced concrete plate structures such as skew slab bridges, the deck of skew girder bridges.

  • A new form of construction utilizing structural steel as the boundary elements in ductile flexural concrete walls is proposed to solve the bar congestion problems in such a heavily reinforced region, while maintaining the ductility and energy absorption capacity comparable to their traditional form. Two wall specimens containing rectangular hollow structural sections (HSS) and channels at their ends respectively, and one companion standard reinforced concrete wall specimen with concentrated end reinforcement were constructed and tested under reversed cyclic loading to evaluate the construction process as well as the structural performance. Initially, all three specimens were chosen and detailed with some caution to have approximately the same flexural capacity without change of the original shape and dimension of a rectangular cross section correction. Analysis and comparison of test results indicated that the reversed cyclic responses of three walls showed similar hysteretic properties, but in those with steel boundaries, local buckling of the corresponding steel webs and flanges following significant yielding was a dominant factor to determine the hysteretic response. The monotonic and cyclic responses predicted based on a sectional approach was also presented and found to be in good agreement with measured results. Design recommendations considering local instability of the structural steel elements and the interaction between steel chords and a concrete web member in such a composite wall are presented.

  • To reduce the radiated noise of ships, the noises which are generated from onboard machinery, propulsion system and transfer characteristics of structure must be identified. While the ship is operating, however, we can not directly measure each signal of inputs and characteristics of transfer passage, because measured signals are superimposed by multi source and multi transfer passage. In this paper, the signal processing method for separating noise sources and transfer functions from the measured response signal by the cepstrum technique is proposed. The proposed method is verified by application of simulated signal and impact test and shows usefulness by application of real ship test.
