Association between BMI and Mortality - Kangwha cohort study - (BMI와 사망과의 관련성 - 강화 코호트 연구 -)

  • Objectives : To investigate the association between BMI and Mortality. Methods : This study was based on the analysis and assembly of the 'Kangwha Cohort Study', previously conducted by the Department of Preventive Medicine, Yonsei University. A total of 2,696 males and 3,595 females were followed for almost ten years and ten months from March 1985 to January 1996, a total of whom 2,420 died during this period. The Cox's proportional hazards regression model was used to analyze this data. Results : We found a U-shaped relationship between BMI and mortality among the aged men in the Kangwha cohort. The hazard ratio of dying was adjusted for age, marital status, occupation, self cognitive health level, chronic disease, smoking, and alcohol frequency, then sorted by body mass index into the following groups; less than 10.5, 18.5 to less than 21.0, 21.0 to less than 23.5, 23.5 to less than 26.0 and greater than or equal to 26. The corresponding ratios for men were 1.81(1.50-2.19, 95%CI), 1.31(1.14-1.51, 95%CI), 1.0(referent), 1.05(0.87-1.26, 95%CI) and 1.39(1.09-1.76, 95%CI), respectively. And for women, 1.46(1.19-1.78), 1.12(0.95-1.31, 95%CI), 1.0(referent), 1.00(0.84-1.20, 95%CI) and 1.09(0.89-1.34, 95%CI), respectively. Conclusions : The risk of death among aged men in Kangwha increased in the under and overweight groups. The relationship between BMl and mortality has been well studied in Western populations, but little is known about the association between BMI and mortality in our country. So, on the basis of this study, it is apparent that more studies of the relationship between BMI and mortality will be needed for future work.

Association of a Combination between Actual Body Mass Index Status and Perceived Body Image with Anxiety and Depressive Condition in Korean Men and Women: The Fifth and Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2010-2014) (우리나라 성인남녀의 비만 및 주관적 체형인식과 불안·우울과의 관련성: 국민건강영양조사(2010-2014년) 분석)

  • Background: Both objective body shape and perceived body image have been known to influence the mental health. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship of a combination between actual body mass index (BMI) status and perceived body image with anxiety depressive condition (ADC) in Korean men and women. Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed data of 26,239 subjects ${\geq}20$ years old from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2010-2014). This study performed a Rao-Scott chi-square and multivariate logistic regression analyses reflecting survey characteristics and used a variety of independent variables such as socio-demographics and health behavior factors. Results: With all independent variables considered, people with normal weight who perceived themselves as overweight were more likely associated with ADC than a referent group with normal weight who perceived themselves as normal weight, as shown for both men (odds ratio [OR], 1.52; confidence interval [CI], 1.07-2.15) and women (OR, 1.25; CI, 1.06-1.48). Meanwhile, compared to the referent group, men with underweight who perceived themselves as underweight showed a lower association with ADC (OR, 0.63; CI, 0.41-0.97), whereas women with underweight who perceived themselves as underweight showed its higher association (OR, 1.47; CI, 1.10-1.96). Conclusion: A certain group of people categorized as a combination between actual BMI status and perceived body image showed a relatively high likelihood of having ADC, and the gender difference in the likelihood of having the condition for a group was clear. Therefore, this study suggests the need to identify the group at a high risk of ADC on the basis of actual BMI status and perceived body image and to develop an appropriate mental health management program for the group.

A 4-Year Follow-up Cohort Study of the Respiratory Functions in Toner-handling Workers

  • Background: Focusing on the respiratory function for health effect indices, we conducted a cross-sectional study on workers who did and did not handle toner to compare the longitudinal changes. Methods: Among 116 individuals who worked for a Japanese business equipment manufacturer and participated in the study, the analysis included 69 male workers who we were able to follow up for 4 years. We categorized the 40 workers engaged in toner-handling work as the exposed group and the 29 workers not engaged in these tasks as the referent group, and compared their respiratory function test results: peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR), vital capacity (VC), predicted vital capacity (%VC), forced expiratory volume in 1 second ($FEV_1$), and forced expiratory volume in 1 second as a percent of forced vital capacity ($FEV_1%$). Results: The cross-sectional study of the respiratory function test results at the baseline and at the $5^{th}$ year showed no statistically significant differences in PEFR, VC, %VC, $FEV_1$, and $FEV_1%$ between the exposed and referent workers. Also, respiratory function time-course for 4 years was calculated and compared between the groups. No statistically significant differences were shown. Conclusion: Our study does not suggest any toner exposure effects on respiratory function. However, the number of subjects was small in our study; studies of larger populations will be desired in the future.

A Study on Signification of Components in Fashion Advertising (의류광고 구성요소의 의미화 고정에 관한 연구)

  • In the study, conceiving that signifying processes like model, setting, advertisement and description are important to promote the purchase of clothes that would satisfy consumer's desire by their expressing mode, I considered the processes of components of which fashion ads consist. As for the methods to study, I regarded the results presented from prior researches of clothing & textiles and other disciplines for the components of fashion ads and objectified their image that may be interpreted subjectively: and then, I adopted to analyse them using advertisement-semiological method to make clear the signifying processes. The results are as follow: 1. Fashion ad, one of visual symbols to transfer brand image, conveys the image with which various components are combined like model, clothes, setting and description as signs. ① the image of clothes amy be differently expressed according to social, cultural norm and individual characteristics, in the case of clothes, therefore, the signified can be regarded as the transferred image by design of the clothes① sign, and the abstract conception which may be rise to mind by the image in a ceratin culture. ② Each signifier such as countenance, line of vision, attitude and hairstyle of a model conveys different image, or the signified, respectively, and it amy operate as a sign that can express the brand image symbolically. ③ The signifiers like background, color and property symbolize the advertised merchandise of clothes and define it attribute.. 2. In the case of fashion ads, key referent systems are fashion phenomena, contemporary role image, social psychology, common morality, and social, economical and milieu.

Exploring Self-image Congruity and Regret for IS Continuance based on the Expectation-Confirmation Model

  • In order to understand information system post-adoption phenomena, the expectation-confirmation model (ECM) was proposed. Past studies based on the ECM focus on a referent centered on the target IS being studied. The effect of this reference, captured through confirmation, has been strongly shown. However, the saliency of two additional reference effects, captured through self-image congruity and regret, has not been explored. In order to fill this knowledge gap, this paper attempts to develop a research model that extends the ECM by incorporating self-image congruity and regret as well as perceived enjoyment. For this extension, we synthesize the extant literature on continued IS use, self-image congruity, and regret. The analysis results tell us that self-image congruity plays a key role in forming two post-adoption beliefs, perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment. It is also found that the absolute effect of regret on continuance intention is larger than those of other antecedents identified in IS. Overall, this study preliminarily confirms the saliency of self-image congruity and regret in post-adoption phenomena. Our study results is likely to help the IS community systematically address unexplored effects of self-image congruity and regret.

Semantics of exceptives oyey and pakkey in Korean

  • In this paper, I show how oyey 'except' and pakkey 'but' in Korean are semantically different from but/except in English. The exceptive oyey is attached only to a definite NP and shows no restriction on the NP that it is associated with. The referent of the NP is removed from either the restrictor, or nuclear scope, of the associated NP, also giving rise to two different inferences about the exception phrase. The inferences are based on the condition that an expression should make a non-trivial meaning contribution in a sentence. The complement of oyey is really taken to be an exception in one interpretation, but not in the other. The exceptive pakkey is assumed to be a NPI. It does not require a phrase that a pakkey-phrase is associated with. It can be attached to any type of phrases, including a NP. Attached to a full phrase, it is interpreted as a scalar item. Its core meaning contribution is to remove weaker alternatives from the scalar set locally. For a general interpretation, the other meanings are captured globally. A pakkey-phrase with a demonstrative has a conjunctive meaning, and it can be analyzed like oyey in one of the two interpretations.

An Empirical Study of the Effects of a Customer's Power on a Supplier's Customer Integration and Operational Performance Improvement (고객기업의 힘이 공급기업의 고객기업 통합활동과 운영성과 향상에 미치는 영향)

  • Customer firms exercise various sources of power to influence their suppliers' behaviors or decisions. In this study we aim to examine the effects of customers' sources of power on their supplier's performance improvement. This study posits that a customer's expert, referent, and reward power positively influence a supplier's performance directly as well as indirectly through increased supplier-customer integration. On the contrary, the customer's coercive power is expected to worsen the supplier's operational performance because of increasing distrust, dissatisfaction, and conflict with the customer. Data collected from 1,229 firms from Korea, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the U.S. are used to test the hypotheses. Expert power proves to be the most effective source of customer power in improving a supplier's inventory cost, delivery, and flexibility performance. In contrast, coercive power deteriorates significantly all supplier performance variables. Academic and managerial implications are presented and future research directions are also discussed.

The influence of disc wear on the behavior of the temporomandibular joint: a finite element analysis in a specific case

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of disc thickness on the normal behavior of the temporomandibular joint. Based on a specific patient case, CT scan images showing accentuated wear in the right disc were reconstructed and the geometrical and finite element model of the temporomandibular joint structures (cranium, mandible, articular cartilages and articular discs) was developed. The loads applied in this study were referent to the five most relevant muscular forces acting on the temporomandibular joint during daily tasks such as talking or eating. We observed that the left side structures of the temporomandibular joint (cranium, mandible and articular disc) were the most affected as a consequence of the wear on the opposite articular disc (right side). From these results, it was possible to evaluate the differences in the two sides of the joint and understand how a damaged articular disc influences the behavior of this joint and the possible consequences that can arise without treatment.

The Role of Dealers'Non-Mediated Power in Fostering SME Manufacturers' Cooperation: SME Manufacturers' Perspective

  • Purpose - Distribution channels cannot function without cooperation. While evidence suggests channel power plays a fundamental role in fostering successful manufacturer-dealer channel cooperation in Western countries distribution systems, little is known empirically as to how dealers' possession of non-mediated powers influence SME manufacturers' cooperation in Asian developing countries. Research design, data, methodology - Drawing upon the extant distribution channels literatures; this study conceptualizes a model and examines the effects of dealer's non-mediated powers on manufacturing SME firms, as well as the mediating influence of trust, relationship satisfaction and commitment. A survey of 400 manufacturing SMEs in Taiwan empirically supports the proposed hypothesis. Results - The model is acceptable in terms of overall goodness of fit. Acceptable model fit are indicated by χ2/(df): 2.35, GFI≧.90; RMSEA values≦ .08; IFI, TLI and CFI values≧.90. Our results indicate that, GFI (0.910), IFI (0.937), TLI (0.903), CFI (0.936), and RMSEA (0.079) and therefore, achieved the suggested thresholds. Conclusions - The results of this study have some managerial implications for managers in the dealer's firms. The overall implication from the findings is that managers can utilize expert, referent and traditional legitimate powers to attain channel cooperation with manufacturing SMEs in addition to garnering their trust, relationship satisfaction and commitment.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify variables related to smoking behaviors (never smoked, former smoker, current smoker) among college students on the basis of the PRECEDE model. Method: Data were collected from 327 college students in Chungbuk Province from May to June 2006 using a self-reported questionnaire. Result: The rate of current smokers was 19.0%. The rate of current smokers in male students (41.1%) was significantly higher than that of female students(8.3%). Also, there were significant differences by general characteristics such as major, academic achievements, satisfaction with major and alcohol consumption. Number of smokers among five close friends was 1.72 and it showed significant differences among different gender, majors, levels of satisfaction with majors and alcohol consumption. In discriminant analysis, discriminant variables on smoking behavior were the number of smokers among close friends, the referent persons' responses about smoking and subject's belief about smoking. Conclusion: These research findings suggest that we can enhance the prevention of college students' smoking by strengthening the related factors such as enforcing a non-smoking environment and strengthening college health education strategies of non-smoking including a negative belief of smoking and the hazard of passive smoking.
