  • Theoretical simulation studies suggest that dust-obscured AGNs appear for a certain period when merger-driven star-forming galaxies evolve to unobscured type 1 AGNs. The dust-obscured AGNs would have red colors due to the dust extinction in their host galaxies, and they are expected to have higher accretion rates than unobscured type 1 AGNs. Red AGNs are found by selecting type 1 AGNs with very red colors, and they have been suspected as the intermediate-stage, dusty AGNs. However, it is not yet clear if red AGNs really correspond to the dusty AGNs due to a lack of intrinsic properties of red AGNs. For unveiling intrinsic properties of red AGNs, we study the NIR and MIR spectra of unobscured type 1 AGNs and red AGNs. There are three main themes: (i) derivation of NIR and MIR BH mass estimators can be used for red AGN study; (ii) investigation of red AGN selection methods to test its usefulness to identify dusty red AGNs; and (iii) investigation of the accretion rates of red AGNs to see if they have the properties as predicted in the simulation studies.

  • Two studies were conducted to investigate the effects of dietary nucleotides (NT) on the growth performance, hematological parameters, and innate immune responses of red seabream Pagrus major. In Expt I, six experimental diets were formulated: a control, four that contained each NT at a level of 0.15% (inosine monophosphate, IMP; adenosine monophosphate, AMP; guanosine monophosphate, GMP; and uridine monophosphate, UMP), and one with a 1:1:1:1 mixture of NTs (IMP, AMP, GMP, and UMP). In Expt II, five experimental diets were formulated that contained 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, and 1.0% IMP (commercial product). Triplicate groups of juvenile (initial body weight 33.1 g) and growing (initial body weight 120 g) red seabream were fed one of the experimental diets to apparent satiation for 8 weeks in Expt I and 12 weeks in Expt II. In Expt I, fish fed diets with NT had higher growth performance than the control group. The nitroblue tetrazolium and lysozyme activities were higher in fish fed the mixed-NT diet, and lowest in the control group. In Expt II, the final body weight and feed utilization of fish fed the 0.1% IMP diet were significantly higher than those of fish fed the control or 1.0% IMP diets. Diet palatability was improved significantly when 0.1% IMP was added. The lysozyme activity was higher in fish fed diets with 0.4-1.0% than in the control group. These results suggest that supplementation of 0.15% IMP and Mixed-NTs in diet can enhance the growth and immune responses in juvenile red seabream. The optimum IMP level appears to be 0.2% in practical feed formulation for growing red seabream.

  • It is characterized and classified as the type of red brown glass beads to compare the chemical composition and manufacturing technique on the 141 samples in 12 sites of the Three Kingdom Period analyzed until now. It can be divided into three types according to the chemical composition of stabilizers(CaO & $Al_2O_3$) and soda raw materials(MgO & $K_2O$) on the red brown glass beads except one sample. Type I of high alumina glass is identified as the most common types that is 78.6 % of the distribution ratio at analytical samples and is excavated the most from ruin sites. In contrast, type II, 13.6 % of distribution ratio at analytical samples, is about 5 % CaO and $Al_2O_3$, MgO and $K_2O$ at around 1.5 % is similar to the composition of plant ash glass. Type III is that the content of CaO is higher than $Al_2O_3$ and the content of MgO and $K_2O$ is below 1.5 %. It is the same as the composition of natron glass and its share is the lowest as 7.9 %. Of these, type III is divided into two types according to the content of MgO and $K_2O$. It is identified that manufacturing technique of type I and II is drawing and type III is casting method with microscopic investigations. Type II and III is estimated that raw materials is different because is confirmed in the majority of ruins in spite of the fact that distribution ratio is very low. So, red brown glass beads distributed in Korea Peninsula are divided into three types of glass culture.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study is to compare with result of repair and resection in displaced bucket handle medial meniscal tear. Materials and Methods : From Sep. 1998 to Dec. 2001, we experienced 46 cases, 45 patients. We classified them into repair group (group I, 23 cases) and resection group (group II, 23 cases). We analyzed the time interval between injury and operation, zone of tear, the status of reduction and quality of displaced fragment of all cases. Average follow-up period is 29, 28 months, respectively. We evaluated the final results of both groups as Lysholm knee score, radiologic changes and 2nd look arthroscopy. Results : Mean age was 25 years old in both group, respectively. Mean interval between injury and surgical treatment was 12 and 17 weeks. respectively. In group I, 6 of 7 cases were evaluated as clinical success in red-red zone, 12 of 15 cases were assessed as clinical success in red-white zonal tear, stable reduction. Another case which is evaluated as clinical failure showed red-white zonal tear, unstable reduction and poor quality meniscal fragment. 5 cases showed variant degrees of tibio-femoral compartment symptom. In group II, red-white zone (9 cases) and white-white zone (14 cases) were treated as resection and got good results. Conclusion : Considering zone of tear, reducibility and quality of meniscal fragment before treatment will improve the success rate of meniscal repair.

  • Red quasars have been suspected to be an intermediate population between merger-driven star-forming galaxies and normal quasars. In this scenario, red quasars are expected to have dusty red color coming from the dust extinction by dust and gas in their host galaxy. However, several studies have proposed different explanation of the red color of red quasars, which are i) a moderate viewing angle between type 1 and 2 quasars, ii) an unusual covering factor of dust torus, and iii) an anomalous synchrotron emission with a peak at NIR wavelength. In this study, we investigate the factor leading to the red color of red quasars by using the line luminosity ratios of the hydrogen Balmer to Paschen series of 11 red quasars. We find the Pb/Hb luminosity ratios of the red quasars are significantly higher than those of normal quasars. Moreover, we compare the Pb/Hb luminosity ratios of the red quasars to the theoretically expected line luminosity ratios computed from the CLOUDY code. We find the line luminosity ratios of the red quasars cannot be explained by the theoretical line luminosity ratios with any physical conditions. We conclude that red color of red quasars comes from dust extinction by their host galaxy. This result is consistent with the picture that red quasars are an intermediate population between the merger-driven star-forming galaxies and normal quasars.
