Estimation of current and future loading from watershed is necessary for the sound management of water quality of an estuary lake. Pollution sources of point and non-point source pollution were surveyed and Identified for the Koheung watershed. Unit factor method was used to estimate potential pollutant load from the watershed of current conditions. Flow rate and water qualify of base flow and storm-runoff were monitored in the main streams of the watershed. Estimation of runoff pollutant loading from the watershed into the lake in current conditions was conducted by GWLF model after calibration using observed data. Prospective pollutant loading from the reclaimed paddy fields under cultivation conditions was estimated using the modified CREAMS model. As a result, changes of pollutant loading into estuary lake according to non-cultivation and cultivation conditions of reclaimed tidal land were estimated.
The purpose of this study is to present the model of ecological restoration through analysis on the condition of hydrach succession process in brackish water lake. To this study, we investigate and research the present condition of brackish water lake in South Korea. Most brackish water lake in South Korea have characteristics that is come into being malignant hydrach succession. Many lakes were reclaimed to increase foodstuff production. And river conservation work seperate lakes from the ocean. In a embryological view, most lakes based on the brackish water lakes, But present lakes show many different types such as a fresh water lake, a salt lake, a brackish water lake, a swamp, and a marshland. As a result, brackish water lakes have greatly damaged by diverse artificial interventions to promote people's activities. Therefore, in order to manage brackish water lakes systematically, criteria of lake preservation must be coincide with the present conditions of hydrach succession in each lake.
Lake water quality assessment information is useful to anyone involved in lake management, from lakeshore owners to lake associations. 11 provides lake water quality, which can improve how to manage lake resources and how to measure current conditions. It also provides a knowledge base that can be used to protect and restore lakes. SWMM was applied to simulate the discharge and pollutant loads from Boryeong watershed, and WASP5 was applied to analyze the changes of water quality in Boryeong freshwater lake. In each model, the most suitable parameters were calculated through sensitive analysis and some parameters used default data. Simulated in SWMM and measured discharge showed the accuracy of 88.6%. T-N and T-P exceeds the criteria in the simulation of water quality in Boryeong freshwater lake, and control of pollutant loads in the main stream showed the most effective way. Integrated water quality management system was developed to give convenience in the operation of SWMM and WASP5 and data acquisition.
The remote monitoring system of water salinity was assessed in Wando reclaimed land lake during a farming season in 2009. Increasing of water salinity in this lake used to bring about salt damage on rice plant occasionally. At the early stage of the rice growing period, rice growth was not damaged due to enough rainfall with more than 120 mm from the mid-May to the first ten days of June. Data collection using on-site water salinity measuring sensors every 2 hours and real-time transmission in system were carried out for the experiment. We compared the transmitted values from the sensor system with water sample values collected and analyzed by a local technical office. Salt concentrations measured by sensor in real-time monitoring system were available data. The regression equation between rainfall and water salinity was presented as (water salinity after rainfall) = $0.621{\times}$(water salinity before rainfall)${\times}exp(-0.0139{\times}rainfall)$, ($r^2=0.579$, p<0.01). It is suggested that the system is useful for stable farming in the area where farmer use water in reclaimed lakes as an irrigation source.
In order to control the water quality of freshwater lake in tidal reclaimed land, it is needed to evaluate accurate amount of pollutant loadings from reclaimed paddy field. This study was carried out to investigate the pollutant loading from a reclaimed paddy field. Site of the study was a paddy field located in Taeho reclaimed land, with an areas of 38.5 hectares. The runoff loadings of Total-Nitrogen, Total-Phosphorus, and Chemical Oxygen Demand were 49.5 kg/㏊/yr, 3.2 kg/㏊/yr and 154.0 kg/㏊/yr, respectively. The runoff loadings in Total-Nitrogen and Total-Phosphorus from this study were much higher values than the pollutant load factor of Total-Nitrogen and Total-Phosphorus from the paddy field published by the Ministry of Environment.
Tidal land reclamation provided water resources and land for agriculture and contributed stable crop production. However, climate change by global warming disrupts the hydrologic circulatory system of the earth resulting in sea level rise and more frequent flood for reclaimed arable land. Recently, Suyu reclaimed paddy field in Jindo-gun experienced prolonged inundation after heavy rainfall and there is a growing risk of flood damage. Onsite survey and flood analysis using GATE_Pro model of Korea Rural Corporation were conducted to investigate causes of flooding. To perform the analysis, input data such as inflow hydrograph, the lowest elevation of paddy field, neap tide level, management level of Gunnae estuary lake at the time of the flood were collected. Flood analysis confirmed that current drainage facilities are not enough to prevent 20year return period flood. The result of analysis showed flooding more than 24hours. Therefore, flood mitigation alternatives such as sluice gate expansion, installation drainage pumping station, refill paddy land, and catch canal were studied. Replacing drainage culvert of Suyu dike to sluice gate and installing drainage pumping station at the Gunne lake were identified as an effective flood control measures. Furthermore, TM/TC (SCADA) system and expert for gate management are required for the better management of drainage for estuary dam and flood mitigation.
The standard design methodology was suggested to construct wetland system for reducing non-point source pollution from Saemangeum reclaimed paddy land. To set for the design flow and concentrations, runoff and water quality survey were conducted during the irrigation period in 2008 at Gyehwa reclaimed paddy land located at near Saemangeum lake. It is rational that 1ha is the optimum constructed wetland size. To meet this size, the moderate drainage area of reclaimed paddy field was 50ha under the conditions that rainfall is 30mm, average runoff coefficient is 0.83, and runoff capture ratio is 0.6. At these condition, the runoff volume from 50ha was 10,520 $m^3/d$ including base flow during irrigation period. To select the optimum wetland system, several case studies were conducted by focusing on the tidal reclaimed land areas having wetland systems in Seokmun. Pond-Wetland system was selected as the standard model because of showing the highest reduction efficiency. Single variable regression equation were delivered to estimate effluent water concentrations from the designed wetland by using long-term monitoring data from the Seokmun experiment site. The effluent concentration from the designed wetland using these equation were showed moderately range.
Kojima Lake in Okayama prefecture is a freshing reservoir constructed adjacent to the oldest reclaimed land in Japan. This lake has a serious water quality problem because two urban rivers are flowing into it. In the present study, unsupervised classification was performed at intervals of several years using Landsat MSS data in the past 15 years. After geometric correction of these data, MSS data corresponding geographically to the field observation data were extracted and subjected to the multivariate analysis. Water quality distribution in the lake was estimated using the regression equation obtained as a result. In addition, two - dimensional and three-dimensional numerical simulations were performed and compared with the distribution obtained from the satellite images. Behavior of the reservoir flows is complicated and water quality distribution varies greatly with the flows. Here, I report the results of analysis on three factors, field observation, numerical simulation and satellite images.
