This paper presents an experimental investigation into the effectiveness of using carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) and steel plates to repair damaged reinforced concrete (RC) beams with circular web openings at shear zones. It highlights the effectiveness of externally bonded CFRP and steel plates in repairing damaged RC beams by analysing the repaired beams'load capacity, deflection, strain, and failure mode. For the experiment, a total of five beams were used, with one solid beam as a control beam and the other four beams having an opening near the shear zone. Two beams with openings were repaired using inclined and vertical configuration CFRP plates, and the other two were repaired using inclined and vertical configuration steel plates. The results confirm the effectiveness of CFRP and steel plates for repairing damaged RC beams with circular openings. The CFRP and steel plates significantly increase ultimate capacity and reduce deflection under the openings. The inclined configuration of both CFRP and steel plates was more effective than the vertical configuration. Using an inclined configuration not only increases the ultimate capacity of the beams but also changes the mode of failure from shear to flexural.
In this study, effects of impact loads on reinforced concrete (RC) plates are examined analytically. During examination of RC plates, they were exposed to impact loading with two different support conditions in three different sizes. RC plates in different support conditions were analyzed with Concrete Damage Plasticity Model (CDP) and reinforcing steel was modeled with Classical Metal Plasticity Model (CMP) by ABAQUS finite element software. After the analysis it is found that impact loads, displacements, energy absorption capacities and damage patterns are changed due to support conditions and plate sizes. Results that are obtained from RC plate experiments in literature under impact loads are found to be similar with the results of numerical analysis with CDP material models.

RC beam of existing structures often encounter shear problems for various reasons. The shear failure of RC beam is sudden and brittle. Strengthening technique jacketing with external bonding of steel plates(or CFRP and CFS) with epoxy is many use to in practice. This study presents test results on strengthening shear deficient RC beams by external bonding of slit type steel plates. Test parameters are width, interval, length, thickness and angle of slit in steel plates. The purpose was to evaluate the reinforcing effects, failure modes and shear capacities for RC beams of strengthened with various slit type steel plates. The test result confirmed that all slit steel plates improved the stiffness and strength of the specimens significantly. Failure modes of SV series and SD series showed shear fractures and flexure fractures at ultimate state respectively. SD series were ductile rather than SV series.
The topic of this study is to strengthen cracked beams with prefabricated RC U cross-sectional plates. The damaged beams were repaired by epoxy based glue. The repaired beams were strengthened using prefabricated plates. The strengthening plates were bonded to the bottom and side faces of the beams by anchorage rods and epoxy. The strengthened beams were incrementally loaded up to maximum load capacities. The experimental results were satisfactory since the load carrying capacities of damaged beams were increased approximately 76% due to strengthening. It was observed that strengthening plates had a dominant effect on the performance of beams in terms of both the post-elastic strength enhancement and the ductility. The experimental program was supported by a three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis. The experimental results were compared with the results obtained from the beam modeled with ANSYS finite element program.

The purpose of this paper is to analyse and compare experimentally flexural behavior of RC beams strengthened with CFRP plates by different methods, which are divided into three classes: externally-bonded without end anchorage, externally-bonded with end anchorages, and anchored after prestressing of CFRP plates. Test results show that the RC beams strengthened with end anchorages have the improvement of ductility and flexural performance evaluation including ultimate strength and deflection, compared with only external bonding. Especially, RC beams with prestressed and anchored CFRP plates increase ultimate strength and ductility significantly.
Reinforced concrete (RC) columns, as the primary load-bearing structural components in buildings, may need to be strengthened due to material deteriorations, changes in usage, new building codes or new design requirements. The use of post compressed plates (PCP) to strengthen existing RC columns has been proven experimentally and practically to be effective in solving stress-lagging effects between the original column and the new strengthening jacket caused by the pre-existing loads. This paper presents a comprehensive summary and review of PCP strengthening techniques to strengthen preloaded RC columns. The failure mode, deformability, and ductility of the strengthened RC columns are reviewed.

In the case of reinforced concrete beams strengthening by steel plate, sometimes these beams collapse due to the stress concentration at the ends of steel plates before the design expected failure. This kind of failure is called premature failure. This study analyzes the behavior of strengthened RC beams to control premature failure of these plated beams with either changing the geometries at the ends of plates or strengthening steel plates beside the ends. The results from the former cases show that, the effect of expanded plates sections at the ends was very small, and the beams which are rounded the ends of plates effectively increased the initial rip-off loads about 14% compared with control beam but the ultimate loads was almost same. However, the beams in the latter cases effectively increased the initial and the ultimate rip-off loads with changing failure mode, especially around 14~19% in the ultimate rip-off load comparing with control beam.
The use of post-compressed plates (PCP) to strengthen preloaded reinforced concrete (RC) columns is an innovative approach for alleviating the effects of stress-lagging between the original column and the additional steel plates. Experimental and theoretical studies on PCP-strengthened RC columns have been presented in our companion papers. The results have demonstrated the effectiveness of this technique for improving the strength, deformability and ductility of preloaded RC columns when subjected to axial or eccentric compression loading. An original and comprehensive design procedure is presented in this paper to aid engineers in designing this new type of PCP-strengthened RC column and to ensure proper strengthening details for desirable performance. The proposed design procedure consists of five parts: (1) the estimation of the ultimate load capacity of the strengthened column, (2) the design of the initial pre-camber displacement of the steel plate, (3) the design of the vertical spacing of the bolts, (4) the design of the bearing ends of the steel plates, and (5) the calculation of the tightening force of the bolts. A worked example of the design of a PCP-strengthened RC column is shown to demonstrate the application of the proposed design procedure.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of adding fibers to concrete and the distribution rate of the porosity on the interfacial stresses of the beams strengthened with various types of functionally graded porous (FGP) plate. Toward this goal, the beams strengthened with FGP plate were considered and subjected to uniform loading. Three types of beams are considered namely RC beam, RC beam reinforced with metal fibers (RCFM) and RC beam reinforced with Alfa fibers (RCFA). From an analytical development, shear and normal interfacial stresses along the length of the FGP plates were obtained. The accuracy and validity of the proposed theoretical formula are confirmed by the others theoretical results. The results showed clearly that adding fibers to concrete and the distribution rate of the porosity have significant influence on the interfacial stresses of the beams strengthened with FGP plates. Finally, parametric studies are carried out to demonstrate the effect of the mechanical properties and thickness variations of FGP plate, concrete and adhesive on interface debonding, we can conclude that, This research is helpful for the understanding on mechanical behavior of the interface and design of the FRP-RC hybrid structures.

A new finite element model will be presented to analyze the nonlinear behavior of not only RC beams and slabs, but also RC beams strengthened by a patch repair. The numerical approach is based on the p-version degenerate shell element including theory of anisotropic laminated composites, theory of materially and geometrically nonlinear plates. In the nonlinear formulation of this model, the total Lagrangian formulation is adopted with large deflections and moderate rotations being accounted for in the sense of von Karman hypothesis. The material model is based on hardening rule, crushing condition, plate-end debonding strength model and so on. The Gauss-Lobatto numerical quadrature is applied to calculate the stresses at the nodal points instead of Gauss points. The validity of the proposed p-version finite element model is demonstrated through several numerical examples for the load-deflection curves, the ultimate loads, and the failure modes of reinforced connote slabs and RC beams bonded with steel plates or FRP plates compared with available experimental and numerical results.
