  • The purpose of this study is to improve the interoperability of IFC for the basic data such as the size of member section, length, thickness, reference location, and eccentricity of the structural members. For this, the method to represent the basic data of structural member is proposed. In the proposed method, the most important criteria is the way that engineers recognize and treat the basic data of structural members. Then, in this study, an IFC file is generated based on the proposed method for a simple RC building composed of members and it is examined that the correct basic data can be derived from the IFC file in the way that engineers do in practice. From the results of the examination, the proposed method is expected to improve the interoperability of IFC for the basic data.

  • This research is a park of a research program to develope a new design method for reinforced concrete bridge columns under axial load and cyclic lateral load. The objectives of this paper are to investigate the relationship between curvature ductility and displacement ductility and to propose a correlation equation for designing of reinforced concrete bridge columns under axial load and cyclic lateral load. Computer program NARCC was used for parametric study, which was proved to provide good and conservative analytical result especially for deformation capacity and ductility factor compared with test result. A total of 7,200 spirally reinforced concrete columns were selected considering the main variables such as section diameter, aspect ratio, concrete strength, yielding strength of longitudinal and confinement steel, longitudinal steel ratio, axial load ratio, and confinement steel ratio. A new equation between curvature ductility factor displacement ductility factor with the aspect ratio was proposed by investigation of 21,600 data produced from the selected column models by applying 3 different definitions of yield displacement.

  • Recently, the concept of seismic design has changed from prescriptive to performance based design. For the performance based design with the specified target performance of the structure, it is necessary to execute the inelastic structural analysis to predict precisely the actual behavior of the structure. To address this issue, the seismic performance of the 5-story RC moment-resisting frames designed in accordance with KBC2009 is evaluated through push-over analysis and economic analysis is conducted focused on the direct construction costs. The results show that the ordinary and the intermediate moment-resisting frame are evaluated to meet the required performance design criteria and that the direct construction costs of the two frames are similar. However, although the special moment-resisting frame designed with strong column-weak girder philosophy satisfies the required performance design criteria, the direct construction cost is uneconomical compared with other frames. Therefore, although the intermediate moment-resisting frame of design category D is prohibited in IBC2012, the ordinary and the intermediate moment-resisting frame are estimated to be more reasonable than the special moment-resisting frame for the design of 5-story RC moment-resisting frame.

  • Generally, steel corrosion occurs in concrete structures due to carbonation in down-town area and underground site and it propagates to degradation of structural performance. In general diagnosis and inspection, only carbonation depth in sound concrete is evaluated but unsound concrete such as joint and cracked area may occur easily in a concrete member due to construction process. In this study, field survey of carbonation for RC columns in down-town area is performed and carbonation depth in joint and cracked concrete including sound area is measured. Probability of durable failure with time is calculated through probability variables such as concrete cover depth and carbonation depth which are obtained from field survey. In addition, service life of the structures is predicted based on the intended probability of durable failure in domestic concrete specification. It is evaluated that in a RC column, various service life is predicted due to local condition and it is rapidly decreased with insufficient cover depth and growth of crack width. It is also evaluated that obtaining cover depth and quality of concrete is very important because the probability of durable failure is closely related with C.O.V. of cover depth.

  • Building demolitions at urban area make some inconvenience to neighborhood through generating noises, ground vibrations, and dusts. For this reason, various methods to control such environmental impacts have been being designed and practiced. Among the methods, the use of explosive demolition is rapidly increasing because it can minimize the inconveniency as well as decrease the working time and cost. In this respect, the old Sung-Nam city hall, which was a Rahmen structure comprised of beams, slabs and columns, was decided to be demolished by explosive demolition. This paper shows that explosive demolition can be the most suitable way of removing old buildings eco-friendly, safely, and economically by showing the observation results obtained from the actual demolition operation for the Sung-Nam city hall.

  • With recent trend in domestic and global market requiring architectures' conversion into skyscrapers seasoned with the features of landmarks, structural problems in relation with explosive spatting during fire emergencies are arising as controversial issues. Accordingly, many productive researches have been made in relation to the reinforcement techniques for improving fire resistance and the number of applications in the field is gradually increasing. In this study, a ductile outline form using ECC (Engineered Cementations Composites) was made with improvements on the structure and fire resistance to examine its applicability. Also, currently in Japan, the number of studies and applications is increasing focusing on reduction of construction time and improvement of workability with application of Half-PCa method. However, using such method of construction, large structural members decrease the utilization of space and architecture-wise, there is a disadvantage of the weight increase. Therefore, in such context, it would be worth reducing the weight of the structural members by reducing the size using ECC. In addition, its excellent pseudo strain-hardening due to fiber may have great effects on seismic designs. In the mean time, this study planned 3 equal conditions for mix water, PVA fiber and additives excluding binder and refractory to evaluate the mechanical properties of resistance against pressure and internal force. Finally, an evaluation was executed on the fire resistance of the newly made ductile outline form. As a result, from ECC-I to ECC-III, all showed excellent mechanical properties due to pseudo strain-hardening and in the fire resistance test conducted with ISO 834 heating curve, most of them tended to be in the range of the reference temperature (538℃-180min), so there was no occurrence of any explosive spatting.

  • The evaluation of displacement ductility is performed by direct method through tracking the inelastic hysteretic behavior of RC bridge columns subject to cyclic loading using a flexibility-based fiber element mode. To reasonably track the inelastic behavior until the RC bridge column reaches its ultimate state, the average stress-average strain relations and joint elements, which agree well with experiments, are modified and applied considering the tension stiffening behavior and discontinuous displacement between the column and its base. In addition the evaluation of displacement ductility is performed by a direct method easily applicable to numerical analysis. Locations for the integration points, values for the post-crushing concrete strength and low-cycle fatigue failure of longitudinal reinforcement that affect the calculation of yielding and ultimate displacements are proposed for the application to flexibility-based fiber element model. Since less than 10% of error occurs during the displacement ductility analysis, the yielding and ultimate displacements evaluated by the applied analysis method and model appear to be valid.

  • The objective of this research is to investigate the seismic performance and flexure-shear behavior of square reinforced concrete bridge piers with solid and hollow cross section. Test specimens were nonseismically designed with the aspect ratio 4.5 Two reinforced concrete columns were tested under constant axial load while subjected to lateral load reversals with increasing drift levels. Longitudinal steel ratio was 2.217 percent. The transverse reinforcement ratio As/($s{\cdot}h$), corresponding to 58 percent of the minimum lateral reinforcement required by Korean Bridge Design Specifications for seismic detailing, which represent existing columns not designed by the current seismic design specifications or designed by limited ductility concept. This study are to provide quantitative reference data for the limited ductility design concept and tendency for performance or damage assessment based on the performance levels such as cracking, yielding, collapse, etc. Failure behavior, ultimate displacement/drift ratio, displacement ductility, response modification factor, equivalent viscous damping ratio, residual deformation, effective stiffness, plastic hinge length, strain of reinforcements and nonlinear analysis are investigated and discussed in this paper.

  • This study is to find out how column with hole is behaved, compared to the normal one without hole. There might be existing buildings to make holes in the reinforced concrete column. Columns are made with commercially used compressive strength $240kg/cm^{2}$, air amount 5.0%, using re-bar of diameter D13 and D10 having yielding stress $4,000kg/cm^{2}$. The specimen were cured with temperature of $21{\pm}3^{\circ}C$. All specimens of five variables and all holes are geometrically considered and configurated. D3, D5 mean diameter 3cm and 5cm respectively. H1, H2 are the number of holes. Compressive pressure was forced in accordance with KS, following $0.6{\pm}0.4N/mm^{2}$ speed. Main re-bar's were strained with almost same shape through all the specimens. Hole diameter 5cm-having specimen showed cracking around hole. strains of back and front gauges of the specimen were showed similarly. Specimen having two holes in left and right from longitudinally axis resisted 7% less than the one having hole centrically from longitudinal axis. One hole having specimen with diameter 5cm resisted only 3% less than in case of 3cm diameter hole. Hole having in left and right from longitudinal axis will be less resistant than the case longitudinally arranged. Diameter 3cm hole showed less 10% capacity than normal one without hole. Capacity loss difference between diameter 3cm and 5cm showed almost none in case that they are arranged longitudinally.

  • many plumbing system are needed in the ceiling of the building as it becomes advanced more and more. This leads to make effective space between ceiling level and slab less. Also, piping system is not suitably arranged and operated if it is bent around the columns which they are a lot. But this system can be more effective if it passes through the columns directly. Most people think that those columns should not be damaged with such as holes. But actually this is existed in a hotel building in switzerland. This study is to fing out how much capacity the columns become damaged and low using model size of $20cm{\times}30cm$ rectangular section, and 160cm long, in the structural test. it's compressive strength is focused on $240kg/cm^{2}$ design strength, commonly used in korea. Compressive test for them was done at Hanyang University using UTM one thousand tone(1000t) capacity. Variable numbers for the study are one hole of dia 3cm with distance 20cm or 40cm, two holes of dia 3cm with 20cm and 40cm distance, one hole of dia 5cm with distance 20cm and 40cm, two holes of dia 5cm with 20cm and 40cm distance, me eccentric hole with 20cm and 40cm distance, Normal(without hole). two test specimens of each variable are made for the test. ED5H20 capacity was 16.7% decreased, compared to normal one. While ED5H40 distant 40cm from the end of column top showed 19.5% capacity decrease, compared to normal one. Strain of ED5H20 diameter 5cm, in distance of 20cm form the top of the column was less 5% than the one of diameter 3cm. Finally, conclusions are that in case of hole diameter 3cm, located at 20cm from the end of the column top, capacity was decreased down to 3, percent only compared to the same diameter hole with 20cm distant from the end of it.
