  • Copper (Cu), one of the main contaminants in the mine drainage from the closed mine area, needs to be removed before exposed to environment because of its toxicity even in the low concentration. In this study, passive treatment based field pilot experiments using limestone and compost media were conducted during 9 months for enhancing Cu removal efficiency of the mine water treatment facility of S mine located in Goseong, Gyeongsangnam-do in South Korea. The pH increase and Cu removal efficiency showed high value at Successive Alkalinity Producing System ( SAPS) > Reducing and Alkalinity Producing System (RAPS) > limestone reactor in a sequence. The compost media using in SAPS and RAPS contributed to raise pH by organic material decomposition with generating alkalinity, thus, Cu removal efficiency increased. Also, experimental results showed that Cu removal efficiency was proportional to pH increase, meaning that pH increase is the main mechanism for Cu removal. Moreover, Sulfate Reduction Bacteria (SRB) was identified to be most activated in SAPS. It is inferred that the sulfate reduction reaction also contributed to Cu removal. This study has the site significance in that the experiments were conducted at the place where the mine water generates. In the future, the results will be useful to select the more effective reactive media used in the treatment facility, which is most appropriate to remediate mine water from the S mine.

  • Purpose: This study was to identify health needs of the elderly at nursing homes by long-term care grade. Methods: The health needs of 116 elders at two nursing homes in Seoul were measured with resident assessment protocols (RAPs), activities of daily living (ADL), and cognitive performance scale (CPS), and pain and depression were measured by resident assessment instrument (RAI). Results: With regard to RAPs, 11 out of 18 items had different distribution in the 3 groups significantly. The 1st-grade elders had a higher percentage of 9 items than the 2nd- and 3rd-grade ones but the 3rd-grade ones had the highest health needs related with activity. The 2nd-grade elders had similar health needs to the 1st-grade ones. In terms of functional level, the 1st-grade elders had the highest percentage of CPS and ADL but the 3rd-grade ones had the highest score of pain and depression out of the 3 groups. The standardized assessment instrument to identify specific health needs by the 3 groups should be developed. Therefore, care plans to meet health needs of the 3 groups will be made. Conclusion: It is suggested that nursing care is required to the elderly of the 1st- and 2nd-grade and safe activity and environment to the 3rd-graded ones.

  • In this paper, we propose a scalable random access scheme in SVC based DASH service that enables random access support not only for base layer of SVC but also for enhancement layers. The proposed method includes extension of segment index box ('sidx') from DASH standard, as well as new RAP Synchronization Box ('raps'). Since the proposed scheme provides random access service for movie fragments with SVC encoded video layers, adaptive scalable random access service is possible.

  • To isolate antifungal substances from Korean radish (Raphanus Sativus L.) seeds, various purification techniques such as DE52 cellulose anion exchange, SP-Sephadex C-25 cation exchange, and Sephadex G-50 gel filtration chromatographies were used. The molecular masses of two purified R. sativus antifungal proteins (RAPs) were estimated to be about 6.1 kDa (RAP-1) and 6.2 kDa (RAP-2) by SDS-PAGE, and 5.8 kDa(RAP-1) and 6.2 kDa (RAP-2 by a gel filtration chromatography, respectively. Purified proteins RAP-1 and 2 clearly exhibited different growth inhibitory activities against other microorganisms like Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Although they have similar molecular masses, both RAP-1 and 2 proteins are not identical because their microbial inhibitory actions were different. Therefore, RAP-1 could be a new antifungal protein when compared with the antifungal activities of 2S albumins, Rs-AFPs, Mj-AMPs, chitinase, glucanase, permatin, and ribosome inactivating proteins, all of which are anifungal proteins of plants.

  • Rammed Aggregate Pier (RAP) has extensive applicability as for a foundation of structures. In this study, bearing capacity of the reinforced ground by RAP and the failure behavior of RAP are investigated through experiments. RAPs with diameters of 45, 60, 70 mm were installed in sand, of which relative densities are 60, 70, 90%. Then, two columns of pressure gauges, near the RAPs and one diameter off from the center of piers, are installed 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 cm from the surface of the ground. The test results show that maximum lateral earth pressure is observed near 5∼10 cm (1.0∼2.0D) from the surface, which indicates the occurrence of bulging failure type. In addition, deformation of RAP in radial direction increases with lower relative density of the ground. Furthermore, lateral stress distribution decreases with depth.

  • Objective : The transradial catheterization (TRC) is becoming widespread, primarily for neurointerventions. Therefore, the evaluation of radial artery puncture in clinical practice and a better understanding of the anatomy are important to improve the safety of neuroendovascular surgery. Methods : Ten formalin-fixed adult Korean cadavers were dissected to expose radial artery (RA), brachial artery (BrA) and subclvian artery (ScA), bilaterally. Vessel lengths and diameters were meaured using a caliper and distance between the specific point of vessels and the anatomical landmarks including the radial styloid process, the medial epicondyle of the humerus, the sternoclavicular joint, and the vertebral artery orifice were also measured. Results : The average length between the radial (RAPS) and the BrA puncture sites (BrAPS) and between the vertebral artery orifice (VAO) and the BrA bifurcation (BrAB) did not differ between sides (p>0.05). The average length between the radial styloid process (RSP) and the RAPS was $13.41{\pm}2.19mm$, and the RSP was $26.85{\pm}2.47mm$ from the median nerve (MN). The mean length between the medial epicondyle (ME) and the BrAPS as $44.23{\pm}5.47mm$, whereas the distance between the ME and the MN was $42.23{\pm}4.77mm$. The average VAO-ScA angle was $70.94{\pm}6.12^{\circ}$, and the length between the ScA junction (SCJ) and the VAO was $60.30{\pm}8.48mm$. Conclusion : This study provides basic anatomical information about the radial artery and the brachial route and can help improving new techniques, selection of size and shape of catheters for TRC. This can help neurointerventionists who adopt a transradial neuroendovascular approach and offers comprehensive and safe care to their patients.

  • This paper describes the radiation doses to human and non-human biota in the Republic of Korea, as a result of the Fukushima nuclear accident. By using the measured airborne activity and ground deposition, the effective and thyroid doses of five human age groups (infant, 5 years, 10 years, 15 years and adult) were estimated by the ECOSYS code, and the whole body absorbed dose rate of the eight Korean reference animals and plants (RAPs) was estimated by the K-BIOTA (the Korean computer code to assess the risk of radioactivity to wildlife). The first-year effective and thyroid human doses ranged from 5.7E-5 mSv in the infant group to 2.0E-4 mSv in the 5 years group, and from 5.0E-4 mSv in the infant group to 3.4E-3 mSv in the 5 years group, respectively. The life-time (70 years) effective and thyroid human doses ranged from 1.5E-4 mSv in the infant group to 3.0E-4 mSv in the 5 years group, and from 6.0E-4 mSv in the infant group to 3.5E-3 mSv in the 5 years group, respectively. The estimated maximum whole body absorbed dose rate to the Korean RAPs was 6.7E-7 mGy/d for a snake living in soil (terrestrial biota), and 2.0E-5 mGy/d for freshwater fish (aquatic biota), both of which were far less than the generic dose criteria to protect biota from ionizing radiation. Also, the screening level assessment for ERICA's (Environmental Risks from Ionizing Contaminants: Assessments and management) limiting organisms showed that the risk quotient (RQ) for the estimated maximum soil and water activity was significantly less than unity for both the terrestrial and freshwater organisms. Conclusively, the radiological risk of the radioactivity released into the environment by the Fukushima nuclear accident to the public and the non-human biota in the republic of Korea is considered negligible.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the alcohol volume consumed and alcohol dependancy according to multiple rounds of drinking. Sectional data collected in 2012 as part of an International Alcohol Control Study were used, and 855 of 1,789 drinker aged 19 to 64 were conducted. The proportion of multiple rounds drinking were significantly higher in males(χ²=37.607, p<.001), students(χ²=52.466, p<.001), single(χ²=34.205, p<.001), smoking experience and stressed(χ²=40,09, p<.001; χ²=21.66, p<.001) among drinkers. In particular, the alcohol volume consumed of unmarried people, smokers, and stress groups were significantly higher than married people, non-smokers and no-stress group. The highest alcohol intake in the first, 2nd and third rounds was found in bars in the liquor trade (F=67.8g, p<0.001). The total alcohol intake increased as the number of rounds increased (F=209.993, p=0.001) and the number of drinkers who tested positive for alcohol dependency increased, using the tests RAPS4 and DSM-IV(F=129.836, p<0.001; F=94.669, p<0.001). The OR of alcohol dependancy in males was 2.3(95% CI: 1.745-3.057), unemployed was 3.2(95% CI: 1.053-9.838), smokers was 3.9(95% CI: 1.230-12.292), and stress group was 2.1(95% CI: 1.561-2.768) compared to females, employed, non-smokers, and no-stress group respectively. In conclusion, it suggests that those consuming multiple rounds drinking can become more vulnerable to alcohol harms due to its relation to smoking, stress and increased dependence on alcohol.
