Verification Test of Failover Recovery Technique based on Software-Defined RAID (Software-Defined RAID 기반 장애복구 기법과 실증 테스트)

  • This paper proposes a software defined storaging method to converge the network virtualization technique and the RAID of distributed storage environment. The proposed method designs software based storage which it apply a flexible control and maintenance of storages. In addition, the method overcomes the restricted of physical storage capacity and cut costs of data recovery. The proposed failover recovery technique based on Software-Defined RAID has been tested the substantial verification and the performance using public AWS and Google Storage.

SSD-based RAID-6 System Architecture for Reliability and Performance Enhancement (신뢰성 향상과 성능개선을 위해 다양한 Erasure 코드를 적용한 SSD 기반 RAID-6 시스템 구조)

  • HDD-based RAIDs have been used in high-capacity storage systems for traditional data server. However, their data reliability are relatively low and they consume lots of power since hard disk drive is weak on shock and its power consumption is high due to frequent spindle motor operation. Therefore, this paper presents new SSD based RAID system architecture using various erasure codes. The proposed methode applys Reed-Solomon, EVENODD, and Liberation coding schemes onto file system level and device driver level, respectively. Besides, it uses data allocation method to minimize the side effect of reducing the lifespan of SSD. Detail experimental results show that Liberation code increase wear-leveling rates of SSD based RAID-6 more than other codes. The SSD based RAID system applying erasure codes at the device driver level shows better performance than that at the file system level. I/O performance of RAID-6 system using SSD is 4.5%~8.5% higher than that of using HDD and the power consumption of the RAID system using SSD is 18%~40% less than that of using HDD.

De-duplication of Parity Disk in SSD-Based RAID System (SSD 기반의 RAID 시스템에서 패리티 디스크의 중복 제거)

  • RAID systems have been widely used by connecting several disks in parallel structure. to resolve the delay and bottleneck of data I/O. Recently, SSD based RAID systems are emerging since SSDs have better I/O performance than HDD. However, endurance and power consumption problems due to frequent write operation in SSD based RAID system should be resolved. In this paper, we propose a de-duplication method of parity disk in SSD based RAID system with expensive update cost. The proposed method segments chunk of parity data into small pieces and removes duplicate data, therefore, it can reduce wear-leveling and power consumption by decreasing write operation for duplicated parity data. Experimental results show that bit update rate of the proposed method is 16% in total disk, 31% in parity disk less than that of existing method in RAID-6 system using EVENODD erasure code, and the power consumption of the proposed method is 30% less than that of existing method. Besides the proposed method is 12% in total disk, 32% in parity disk less than that of existing method in RAID-5 system, and the power consumption of the proposed method is 36% less than that of existing method.

  • 본 논문에서는 SANtopiaVM의 데이터 가용성 및 성능을 고려한 에러 핸들링 정책을 제안한다. 제안하는 에러 핸들링 정책은 RAID1과 RAID5에 대한 정책으로 추분하며 에러 발생시의 복구를 위하여 RAID1에서는 FBB(Failed Block Bitmap)라는 비트맵을 추가하여 데이터의 일관성을 유지하고 디스크의 복구 시에는 저기 연산에 대한 부하 분산 및 복구 비용을 감소시키는 쓰기 연산을 제안함으로서 에러 핸들링 시에 입출력 비용을 줄인다. RAID5에서는 추가적인 여분 디스크를 사용한 Sparing Disk 기법을 제안함으로서 디스크 에러 모드에서도 정상 모드의 성능에 근접하는 입출력 성능을 보장하며 빠른 디스크 복구를 지원한다. 제안하는 에러 핸들링 정책은 SANtopiaVM RAID의 오류 발생시, 시스템 성능의 급격한 저하를 완화할 수 있으며 에러로부터 빠른 복구를 지원함으로서 데이터에 대한 효율적인 고 가용성의 특징을 제공한다.

A Study on Efficient Management of RAID Level 5 Cache in OLTP Environment under Linux Operating System (리눅스 운영체제하의 OLTP환경에서 RAID 레벨 5의 효율적인 캐쉬 운영 방안에 대한 연구)

  • RAID 레벨 5는 쓰기 시에 패리티 갱신을 위한 4번의 디스크 접근으로 인하여 OLTP와 같이 상대적으로 빈번한 디스크 접근을 가지고 데이터 크기가 작으며 쓰기의 횟수가 많은 작업환경에서 성능이 떨어지게 된다. 데이터와 패리티에 대한 캐싱은 OLTP환경에서의 쓰기에 대한 문제를 해결하기 위한 기법이다. 본 논문에서는 리눅스 운영체제의 파일 데이터 구조에 변화를 주고, 커널에서 얻어진 정보를 디스크 캐쉬의 운영에 이용한다. 스트라입 크기(G)를 가지는 RAID 레벌 5에서 패리티 캐쉬의 크기가 전체 캐쉬 크기의 1/G 이하 일 경우 데이터 패리티 캐쉬 크기 변화에 영향을 받지 않고 캐쉬의 그룹 단위 운영과 그에 따른 패리티의 미리 읽기를 가능하게 하여 패리티에 대한 추가적인 읽기를 최소화하는 기법을 제안한다. 본 논문의 실험 결과는 초당 디스크에 도착하는 평균 디스크 접근 요구 개수에 변화를 주어 시뮬레이션 방법으로 입증하였으며, OLTP 환경에서 데이터와 패리티 캐쉬를 독립적으로 운영하는 일반적인 캐쉬 운영 방법에 비해 평균 응답시간을 단축시킬 수 있음을 알 수 있다.

  • Energy conservation of server systems has become important. Though storage subsystem is one of the biggest power consumers, development of energy conservation techniques is challenging problem due to striping techniques like RAID and physical characteristics of hard disks. According to our observation, the size of footprint for a day or for hours is much smaller compared to the size of whole data set. In this paper, we describe a design of a novel architecture for RAID that uses an SSD as a large cache to conserve energy by holding such a footprint. We incorporate these approaches into a real implementation of a RAID 5 system that consists of four hard disks and an SSD in a Linux environment. Our preliminary results in actual performance measurements using the cello99 and SPC traces show that energy consumption is reduced by a maximum of 14%.

  • In this paper, the raid and fire preventable system using Zibee module with IEEE 802.15.4 wireless communication standard and multi-sensor was developed displaying raid and firing condition with wireless network. The raid preventable system is designed using a ultrasonhe waves sensor and infrared sensor. The fire preventable system is designed using a thermistor. The datas for raid and firing condition are communicated from enddevice to coordinator with wireless network and are displayed on PC monitor.

  • While RAID 5 disk arrays offer advantages of performance and reliability on wide variety of applications, they suffer from the performance degradation with write jobs. To reduce the effect of this problem, parity logging scheme was suggested. This scheme reduces disk busy time by transforming many small random accesses into large sequential accesses. This paper presents a new parity logging technique which prevents parity update image from redundant storing in the disk buffer and reduces parity maintenance overhead. A analytical model and several simulation results of our proposed scheme are presented.

  • iATA (Internet Advanced Technology Attachment) is a block-level protocol developed to transfer ATA commands over TCP/IP network, as an alternative network storage solution to address insufficient storage problem in mobile devices. This paper employs RAID5 distributed storage servers concept into iATA, in which the idea behind is to combine several machines with relatively inexpensive disk drives into a server array that works as a single virtual storage device, thus increasing the reliability and speed of operations. In the case of one machine failed, the server array will not destroy immediately but able to function in a degradation mode. Meanwhile, information can be easily recovered by using boolean exclusive OR (XOR) logical function with the bit information on the remaining machines. We perform I/O measurement and benchmark tool result indicates that additional fault tolerance feature does not delay read/write operations with reasonable file size ranged in 4KB-2MB, yet higher data integrity objective is achieved.

The Mapping Method by Equation for Adding Disks for Striping System (스트라이핑 시스템에서 디스크 추가를 위한 계산에 의한 매핑 방법)

  • Recently, the volume of data is increasing rapidly in server for multimedia service, according to development of multimedia application environment. In recent research for storage technology the technology like of the SAN(Storage Area Network) advantages in scalibility of storage devices, and can read data from multiple disk arrays through RAID 0, 5. The RAID 0 and 5 translate to logical address to physical address using equation, but in case of adding disks at the system with equation -based mapping, the problem that we must rearrange the whole data in the previous disks happens. We use the mapping table to solve this problem in recent, but we can not load the whole mapping table in main memory because it occupies too large space. Therefore the extra I/Os are demanded to evaluate real physical address of data, so total performance of the system is degraded. In this paper, we propose the mapping method that supports the scalibility in RAID 0 or 5 system. The proposing method applies small metadata, so- called SZIT and simple equation, so it is possible that we make translate logical address to physical address rapidly and it is scalable in disk extending simultaneously Our suggesting method, if we add disks to the striping system for expanding of storage capacity, has an advantage of never stop service. So, SZlT-based mapping method can do online-disk-expanding in real-time service.
