This study is to develop a cloud detection algorit1un for COMS and it is currently tested by using MODIS level 2B and MTSAT-1R satellite radiance data. Unlike many existing cloud detection schemes which use a threshold method and traditional statistical methods, in this study a feed-forward neural network method with back-propagation algorit1un is used. MODIS level 2B products are matched with feature information of five-band MTSAT 1R image data to form the training dataset. The neural network is trained over the global region for the period of January to December in 2006 with 5 km spatial resolution. The main results show that this model is capable to detect complex cloud phenomena. And when it is applied to seasonal images, it shows reliable results to reflect seasonal characteristics except for snow cover of winter. The cloud detection by the neural network method shows 90% accuracy compared to the MODIS products.
The Korean Geostationary satellite (COMS) to fly in year 2009 will carry a meteorological sensor from which visible channel measurements will be available. We developed a method utilizing satellite-derived BRDFs for the solar channel calibration over the bright desert area. The 6S model has been incorporated to account for directional effects of the surface using MODIS-derived BRDF parameters within the spectral interval in interest. Simulated radiances over the desert targets were compared with MODIS and SeaWiFS measured spectral radiances in order to examine the feasibility of the developed calibration algorithm. We also simulated TOA radiance over ocean targets to verify the consistency and reliability of the result. It was shown that simulated 16-day averaged radiances are in good agreement with the satellite-measured radiances within about ${\pm}5%$ uncertainty range for the year 2005, suggesting that the developed algorithm can be used for calibrating the COMS visible channel within about 5% uncertainty level.
The paper first describes the atmospheric correction algorithm for the Ocean Color and Temperature Scanner (OCTS) visible band data used at Earth Observation Center (EOC) of National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA). It uses 10 candidate aerosol models including "Asian dust model" introduced in consideration of the unique feature of aerosols over the east Asian waters. Based on the observations at 670 and 865 nm bands where the reflectance of the water body can be discarded, the algorithm selects a pair of aerosol models that accounts best for the observed spectral reflectances to synthesize the aerosol reflectance in other bands. The paper also evaluates the performance of the algorithm by comparing the satellite estimates of water-leaving radiance and chlorophyll-a concentration with selected buoy-and ship-measured data. In comparison with the old CZCS-type atmospheric correction algorithm where the aerosol reflectance is as-sumed to be spectrally independent, the OCTS algorithm records factor 2-3 less error in estimating the normalized water-leaving radiances. In terms of chlorophyll-a concentration estimation, however, the accuracy stays vey similar compared to that of the CZCS-type algorithm. This is considered to be due to the nature of in-water algorithm which relies on spectral ratio of water-leaving radiances.
The objective of this study is to analyze the characteristic of radiation environment in the urban and rural through the field observation in the summer. The radiation balance was compared through the measurement of the shortwave radiation and long-wave radiation in the urban, sub-urban, and rural. The following conclusion could be obtained from this research. (1) In the results of observation including the rain-day, it was found that the short wave radiance in the urban is lower about 10% than the rural. (2) The upper part of atmosphere layers in the urban area absorb much short wave radiation energies compared with the rural relatively. It can increase the temperature of the upper part of atmosphere layers and the emittance of long wave radiation. (3) The ratio of the downward short wave radiation to the downward long wave radiation was 1.24 for the urban, 1.28 for sub-urban and1.35 for rural. It can be estimated that the atmosphere condition of the rural is better than that of other areas.

This study attempts to classify forest species using hyperspectral data for supporting resources management. The primary dataset used was AISA sensor. The sensor was mounted onboard the NOMAD GAF-27 aircraft at 2,000 m altitude creating a 2 m spatial resolution on the ground. Pre-processing was carried out with CALIGEO software, which automatically corrects for both geometric and radiometric distortions of the raw image data. The radiance data set was then converted to at-sensor reflectance derived from the FODIS sensor. Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) technique was used for image classification. The spectra libraries for tree species were established after confirming the appropriate match between field spectra and pixel spectra. Results showed that the highest spectral signature in NIR range were Kembang Semangkok (Scaphium macropodum), followed by Meranti Sarang Punai (Shorea parvifolia) and Chengal (Neobalanocarpus hemii). Meanwhile, the lowest spectral response were Kasai (Pometia pinnata), Kelat (Eugenia spp.) and Merawan (Hopea beccariana), respectively. The overall accuracy obtained was 79%. Although the accuracy of SAM techniques is below the expectation level, SAM classifier was able to classify tropical tree species. In future it is believe that the most effective way of ground data collection is to use the ground object that has the strongest response to sensor for more significant tree signatures.

In this study, the measurements of infrared (IR) signature were carried out using a small scale engine with the variation of the engine performance and target positions in the exhaust plume. The operating conditions of the engine were kept constant for each test, and the measured positions were sapced at refular intervals from the nozzle exit. The measured IR signature was calibrated by using a blackbody. The results of infrared signature measurements are shown in three bands for analysis of spectral characteristics. As the engine performance decreased and the distance from the nozzle exit increased, the IR signature decreased and the level of decrease varied according to the bands.
kDomestic studies on meteorologicaldata have been carried out, however they were mostly not constant but limited to fragment compilation. The studies on solar energy, among others, have been relatively active but the measurement of solar irradiance is also limited to some extent. This study, in an effort to identify the difference in data between solar radiance and cloud cover, was intended to compare and analyze the typical meteorological data developed by Korean Solar Energy Society with the solar irradiance calculated using the typical meteorological data and cloud cover data provided by current simulation program. Monthly average solar irradiance from the meteorological data (ISO TRY) of Korea's typical meteorological data which was actuallymeasured appeared to be far below the monthly solar irradiance from the American Department of Energy. The solar irradiance calculated based on cloud cover indicates very limited difference between the two data, so the solar irradiance measured by Korean typical metrologicaldata (ISO TRY) indicated the similar value, which demonstrates the solar irradiance data from Korean Meteorological Administration is more accurate than those US National Weather Center.
This proposed simulation-based design study is based on the design of residential high-rise buildings in South-Korea. the purpose of this study is to evaluate the amount of daylighting performance passing through building glazing according to sky conditions, orientation of windows and each space of Apartment buildings. The clear sky includes sunshine and is intense and brighter at the horizon than at the zenith, except in the area around the sun. Daylight received within a building is directly dependent upon the sun's position and the atmospheric conditions. Orientation of the building generally used to refer to solar orientation which is the siting of building with respect to solar access. Although any building will have different orientations for its different sides, the orientation can refer to a particular room, or to the most important facade of the building. north-facing windows receive twice the winter sun than east and west facing windows, allowing light and warmth into the home. They can be easily shaded from the high summer sun to help keep the house cool. Ideally, the glazing area should be between 10-25% of the floor area of the room. This paper was calculated by a Desktop Radiance program. The space dimensions were based on a unit module of real constructed apartment having divided into five sections such as living room, room1, room2, room3 and kitchen.

A recent research trend on the Daylight Responsive Dimming Systems, using available daylight for energy savings, is to integrate automated roller shading systems and venetian blind systems which are vertically controlling daylight to indoor based on sun profile angle. Therefore, this paper suggests Grating Louver System into a pair glass as a new shading system, which can control daylight vertically and horizontally. The optimized spacing of louvers, which is to block direct sunlight into a space, was calculated. And then, the system was simulated for analysis and evaluation of characteristics of daylight by Desktop Radiance 2.0.

It is essential to understand the infrared signature of a naval ship to survive against various missile attacks under variable environmental conditions. As guided missiles are developing to equip more accurate IR seekers, research works for countermeasure and IR stealth technology are strongly required. But challenging works are continuously suggested for predicting and analyzing IR signal status of naval ships to achieve low observable performance under various weather conditions, variable missions and developing threats. In this study, overall guidelines of setting design criteria for low observable ships are proposed by considering varying environmental conditions including daily and seasonal variations. Test and evaluation criteria for newly constructed ships for target and background temperature difference is proposed as a design criteria which can be predicted by change of condition and ship's speed. Through the proposed techniques and procedures, it is expected to establish the measurement and evaluation criteria by using temperature, IR Signal differences between the ship and the background.
