Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) onboard its Communication Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) is scheduled for launch in 2008. GOCI includes the eight visible-to-near-infrared (NIR) bands, 0.5km pixel resolution, and a coverage region of 2500 ${\times}$ 2500km centered at 36N and 130E. GOCI has had the scope of its objectives broadened to understand the role of the oceans and ocean productivity in the climate system, biogeochemical variables, geological and biological response to physical dynamics and to detect and monitor toxic algal blooms of notable extension through observations of ocean color. To achieve these mission objectives, it is necessary to develop an atmospheric correction technique which is capable of delivering geophysical products, particularly for highly turbid coastal regions that are often dominated by strongly absorbing aerosols from the adjacent continental/desert areas. In this paper, we present a more realistic and cost-effective atmospheric correction method which takes into account the contribution of NIR radiances and include specialized models for strongly absorbing aerosols. This method was tested extensively on SeaWiFS ocean color imagery acquired over the Northwest Pacific waters. While the standard SeaWiFS atmospheric correction algorithm showed a pronounced overcorrection in the violet/blue or a complete failure in the presence of strongly absorbing aerosols (Asian dust or Yellow dust) over these regions, the new method was able to retrieve the water-leaving radiance and chlorophyll concentrations that were consistent with the in-situ observations. Such comparison demonstrated the efficiency of the new method in terms of removing the effects of highly absorbing aerosols and improving the accuracy of water-leaving radiance and chlorophyll retrievals with SeaWiFS imagery.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the variation in building energy predictions caused by simulation settings related to building envelop thickness. The study assessed the ceiling depth impact on skylight energy performance through OpenStudio integrated Radiance and EnergyPlus simulation programs. A ceiling as deep as 1.5 to 3m was analyzed for skylight to roof ratios from 1% to 25%. The results indicated that the building ceiling depth negatively affected the capability of skylights to significantly reduce building energy consumption. Through a parametric analysis, the study concluded that 8%, 9%, 10% and 11% skylight to roof ratio were optimal in terms of total building energy consumption for a ceiling depth of 1.5m, 2m, 2.5m and 3m, respectively. In addition, the results showed that the usually recommended 5% skylight to roof ratio was only efficient when no ceiling depth was included in the simulation model. Furthermore, the study indicated that the building energy saved by the optimal skylight of each ceiling depth decreased as the ceiling depth deepened. The highest total building energy reduction was 9%, 7%, 5% and 3% for a ceiling depth of 1.5m, 2m, 2.5m and 3m, respectively. This study induced that the solar heat gains and daylight visible transmittance by ceiling depth were crucial in the predictions of skylight energy performance and should not be neglected through building simulation simplifications as it is commonly done in most simulation programs' settings.
The 3D game graphic technology has become an important factor in the contents field with the game contents development. In particular, game character technology provides a realistic technique and visual pleasure, as well as an intermediate step in the immersion of the game in which the game might create an optical illusion that enables the player to enjoy heroic adventure in the game. The high expression level of characters in 3D games is a key factor in the development process, with details and carefulness of the character setting work [3]. In this paper, we propose a character representative technique applied to mobile games using mathematical model of radiosity energy, spectral radiance model, and ray tracing model method using 3D unity game engine with sensible AI algorithm for game implementation. As a practical application to the game contents, it was found that the projection of the surface in the rendering process and the game simulation might change according to the lighting condition of the game content environment, so that the high quality of game characters was simulated.

To evaluate the quantitative nature of laser fluorescence(LF) and dye-enhanced laser fluorescence(DELF) on early enamel caries, artificial caries were induced on the bovine enamels and argon laser was irradiated on the surfaces of lesions. Fluorescence radiance from enamel specimen was recorded with CCD camera which was connected to PC image analyzing system. The difference of fluorescence of radiance(DFR) between the carious and the sound enamel in each sample of the LF and the DELF groups were measured by image analyzing program. The DFR of lesion surfaces measured with laser fluorescence and lesion depths were evaluated and the results are as follows: The caries lesions were discriminated from sound enamels by the darkness with LF and by the brightness with DELF. The DELF was more sensitive than the LF at the earlier stage of demineralization.

Survivability of an aircraft has been greatly threatened by the development of a weapon system using infrared. Therefore, the infrared stealth technology is a very important technique to improve the survivability of an aircraft. In this study, the infrared signal of an aircraft was analyzed which corresponding to the aircraft surface temperature and environmental conditions with various surface conditions(especially emissivity changed). Based on the analyzed infrared signal, the optimized surface emissivity was suggested to reduce the average contrast radiance and contrast radiant intensity(CRI). In addition, we confirmed that the infrared contrast radiant intensity between the aircraft and the background can be minimized through an appropriately controlled surface emissivity of the aircraft at specific background.
Daylighting software is an important component to predict the performance of daylighting system in advance of a field demonstration study with installing them in buildings. PHOTOPIA is a powerful software to generate a candela distribution curve(CDC) of an active daylighting system like a tracking dish concentrator. With PHOTOPIA, a set of candela distribution curves was generated under clear sky conditions and different solar altitude angles. The candela distribution curves were then imported to RADIANCE for rendering and analysis on the daylighting performance of a tracking dish concentrator when it installed in a actual class room without windows. As a result, the daylight collection efficiency of the dish concentrator was 68.4% when we assumed that there was no tracking error. It was found that candela(cd) and total lumens(lm) increased with solar altitude rising, whereas the distribution angle was fixed. The illuminance uniformity on the work plane in the class room was relatively low, 0.12, while the illuminance uniformity on the area of $2.7m^2$ to which the light was illuminated was considerably high, 0.60. The maximum illuminance was 1,340lux with a solar altitude angle of 80 degrees.
Integrating spheres play a central role in the radiometric calibration of remote sensors. With the development of the wide field of view (FOV) remote sensors, aperture diameters of remote sensors are becoming larger and larger. To satisfy the radiometric calibration requirements of full FOV and full aperture, an 8000mm diameter large aperture integrating sphere uniform source with a variable exit port was designed and manufactured. This integrating sphere will be used for pre-launch test and radiometric calibration of remote satellites. In this paper, optical theories were used to design the output spectral radiance. The LightTools software based on ray-tracing simulation method was used to determine the best combination and distribution of inner light sources. A spectral experiment was made to verify the spectral radiance design. To reduce the influence of longtime power-on, a new characteristic measurement method was developed to obtain the radiation characteristic of the integrating sphere, which could greatly improve the measuring efficiency. This method could also be applied to measure other large aperture uniform sources. The obtained results indicate that the spatial uniformity is 98.35%, and the angular uniformity at center position is 98.78%.
We developed three-wavelength solar bank which is a very important part of the solar simulator with the commercial mercury lamps and projected halogen lamps. This was developed to satisfy simultaneously following three points: the ${\pm}10%$ uniformity of irradiance of the target area and irradiance in the each wave region and $1120W/m^2$ maximum irradiance of the solar in the summer. We used spectral radiance to determine the standard of the spectral irradiance and developed the perfect three-wavelength solar bank, considering of directionality, irradiance distance, interval both lamps, lamps combination and lamp numbers based on the measured spectral irradiance. To proof the capability of the three wavelength solar bank, We carefully analyzed color differences and heat transfer. As a result, we found that three wavelength solar bank was much better than commercial infrared lamp bank in terms of the color differences, heat transfer phenomena.
This report summarizes the results of MODTRAN model that are used for the calculation of input radiance of the KOMPSAT-2 Multispectral Camera (MSC). We have calculated the input radiances for four months: January 15, April 15, July 15 and October 15. Annual averages are the arithmetic mean of results from four months. We used the mid-latitude winter and summer for the month of January and July, respectively, while US standard atmospheres are used for April and October. The orbital characteristics of KOMPSAT-2 and the seasonal variations of solar zenith angle over the Korean peninsula were incorporated as inputs to the model. The tropospheric aerosol extinction (visibility = 50 km) was assumed. The surface albedo used in the model calculation represents the global annual mean clear-sky albedo. MSC contract values are found to be considerably greater in the MSC spectral range than the total radiances calculated with the above general conditions. From these results, it can be inferred that the forthcoming MSC images would be somewhat dark. We certainly need a countermeasure for this issue.
Aims of this study is to investigate the daylighting control strategy of venetian blind system was performed as a function of ratio of shading height to window and slat angles in the preliminary stage of the parametric study. Floor-to-ceiling window walls of living spaces are used widely in apartment buildings since the Korean government has legally allowed elimination of the balcony area. Enlarging living area by balcony elimination, the larger glass area of window is exposed to the direct sunlight. As a common sunlight controlling device, blind system can be used in all orientations and all latitudes and it may obstruct, absorb, reflect and transmit solar radiation to building by proper adjusting. However, blind system can produce discomfort in occupant and less energy efficiency, if it has not been controlled optimally. The simulation model was based on the unit module of typical living space with balcony elimination. The room dimension was $6.0m(w){\times}6.9m(d){\times}2.7m(h)$ with floor to ceiling height of 2.5m. The blind system was simulated at five slat angles (horizontal, $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ upward and downward tilted) and the four ratio of shading height to window (fully closed, partly opened, no-blind) using the Desktop RADIANCE 2.0 program. The series of simulation results indicates that the advantages of available daylight and outside of view can be improved by proper adjusting blind system.
