In this study, detection of icebergs that have various scattering characteristics around Wilkinson glacier in West Antarctica is investigated using C-band fully-polarimetric RADARSAT-2 SAR data. Various polarimetric analyses including Freeman-Durden decomposition, H/A/$\bar{\alpha}$ decomposition, entropy (H) and anisotropy (A) method, and Wishart unsupervised classification, were applied for the RADARSAT-2 data used in this study. The polarimetric decomposition methods were successfully classified most of the iceberg, yet some iceberg with similar intensity of volume and surface scattering as sea ice were indistinguishable. Unsupervised classification with a combination of the polarimetric parameter, [1-H][1-A], gave a possibility to distinguish those unclassified iceberg.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the use of RADARSAT and Landsat TM data for the monitoring of rice growth. The relationships between backscatter coefficients($\sigma$$^{0}$ ) of RADARSAT data and digital numbers (DN) of Landsat TM and rice growth parameters were investigated. Radar backscatter coefficients were calculated by calibration process and then compared with rice growth parameters; plant height, leaf area index (LAI), and fresh and dry biomass. When radar backscatter coefficient ($\sigma$$^{0}$ ) of rice was expressed as a function of time, it is shown that the increasing trend ranged from -22--20dB to -9--8dB as growth advances. The temporal variation of backscatter coefficient was significant to interpret rice growth. According to the relationship between leaf area index and backscatter coefficient, backscatter coefficient underestimated leaf area index at the beginning of life history and overestimated, at the reproductive stage. The same increasing trend between biomass and backscatter coefficient was shown. From these results, RADARSAT data appear positive to the monitoring of rice growth. Each band of time-series Landsat TM data had a significant trend as a rice crop grows during its life cycle. Spectral indices, NDVI[(TM4-TM3)/(TM4+TM3)] and RVI(TM4/TM2), derived from Landsat TM equivalent bands had the same trend as leaf area index.
Two RADARSAT SAR images with different modes acquired by Canadian Space Agency to test the effectiveness of geological lineament extraction and spring water detection over the Cheju Island. Geological lineaments are poorly developed this basalt dominant volcanic island, but more linear features can be extracted when SAR and TM images are simultaneously analyzed than when TM image alone is used. This results mainly owe to the facts that RADARSAT SAR systems are able to provide data with different frequencies, azimuth, and incidence angles. Distribution of spring water along coast is poorly correlated with geological lineaments or drainage pattern, but those in middle range of mountain region are developed along geological lineaments. Detection of spring water using remotely sensed images are turned out to be very difficult to achieve. Radial shaped sea surface temperature anomaly derived from TM thermal band should be the best candidate for spring water, but the resolution is not high enough. We also investigate the normalized radar cross section (or sigma naught) converted from RADARSAT and ERS-1 SAR data but to discriminate the spring water effectively except where relatively large water mass is observed on land side. Speckle noise and irregularity in physical sea surface condition are the serious obstacles for this application. ERS-1 SAR image acquired in low incidence angle was more useful for geological lineament estimation and water body study than RADARSAT SAR images with high incidence angles. Therefore the selection of incidence angle is critical in geological and spring water applications of SAR images, and low incidence angles less than about 30$^{\circ}$ are recommended to monitor the Cheju volcanic island.

Radar remote sensing is appropriate for rice monitoring because the areas where this crop is cultivated are often cloudy and rainy. Especially, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) can acquire remote sensing information with a high temporal resolution in tropical and subtropical regions due to its all-weather capability. This paper analyzes the relationships between backscattering coefficients of rice measured by RADARSAT-2 SAR and growth parameters during a rice growth period. And we applied the relationships to crop monitoring of paddy rice in North Korea. As a result, plant height and Leaf Area Index (LAI) increased until Day Of Year (DOY) 234 and then decreased, while fresh weight and dry weight increased until DOY 253. Correlation coefficients revealed that Horizontal transmit and Horizontal receive polarization (HH)-polarization backscattering coefficients were correlated highly with plant height (r=0.95), fresh weight (r=0.92), vegetation water content (r=0.91), LAI (r=0.90), and dry weight (r=0.89). Based on the observed relationships between backscattering coefficients and variables of cultivation, prediction equations were developed using the HH-polarization backscattering coefficients. Concerning the evaluation for the applicability of the LAI distribution from RADARSAT-2, the LAI statistic was evaluated in comparison with LAI distribution from RapidEye image. And LAI distributions in Pyongyang were presented to show spatial variability for unaccessible areas.
This study was carried out to assess the use of RADARSAT data which is C-band with HH polarization for the rice growth monitoring in Korea. Nine time-series data were taken by shallow incidence angle (standard beam mode 5 or 6) during rice growing season. And then, backscattering coefficients ($\sigma$$^{\circ}$) were extracted by calibration process for comparing with rice growth parameters such as plant height, leaf area index(LAI), and fresh and dry biomass. Field experimental data concerned with rice growth were collected 8 times for the ground truth at the study area, Tangjin, Chungnam, Korea. At the beginning of rice growth, backscattering coefficients were ranged from -l6~-l3dB when rice fields were not covered with rice canopy and flooded. At the maximum vegetative stage of rice, backscattering coefficients of the rice field were the highest ranging from -4.4dB~-3.1dB. The temporal variation of backscattering coefficient($\sigma$$^{\circ}$) in rice field was significant in this study. Backscattering coefficient ($\sigma$$^{\circ}$) of rice field was a little bit lower again after heading stage than before. This results show RADARSAT data is promising for rice monitoring.
SAR image is not dependent on the weather condition and Sun's electromagnetic energy. But geometric distortions exist in almost all radar image, it need to be correction. The Radarsat-1 SAR images are used to monitoring of moisture acquired in May 1/1998 and May 25/1998. Radarsat-1 C band data is sensitive on moisture condition. Study area is located in Non-san site. It is made up almost agricultural area and a little of forest area. In May, Rice-planting is started in the midland of Korea. So moisture condition is undergoing many changes. Forest area need to be terrain effect removal for accurately results because it is included in layover, shadow, and so on. Results of land-cover moisture condition map are useful tool for fields of agriculture, forestry industry, and disaster.
Two different sensors (here, KOMPSAT and RADARSAT) are considered for ship detection, and are used to delineate the detection performance for their data The experiments are set for coastal regions of Mokpo Port and Ulsan Port and field experiments on board pilot boat are conducted to collect in situ ship validation information such as ship type and length This paper introduce mainly the experiment result of ship detection by both RADARSAT SAR imagery and land-based RADAR data, operated by the local Authority of South Korean, so called vessel traffic system (VTS) radar. Fine imagery of Ulsan Port was acquired on June 19, 2004 and in-situ data such as wind speed and direction, taking pictures of ships and natural features were obtained aboard a pilot ship. North winds, with a maximum speed of 3.1 m/s were recorded Ship's position, size and shape and natural features of breakwaters, oil pipeline and alongside ship were compared using SAR and VTS. It is shown that KOMPSAT/EOC has a good performance in the detection of a moving ship at a speed of kts or more an hour that ship and its wake can be imaged. The detection capability of RADARSAT doesn't matter how fast ship is running and depends on a ship itself, e.g. its material, length and type. Our results indicate that SAR can be applicable to automated ship detection for a VTS and SAR combination service.
Small baseline subset (SBAS) algorithm has been recently developed using an appropriate combination of differential interferograms, which are characterized by a small baseline in order to minimize the spatial decorrelation. This algorithm uses the singular value decomposition (SVD) to measure the time-series surface deformation from the differential interferograms which are not temporally connected. And it mitigates the atmospheric effect in the time-series surface deformation by using spatially low-pass and temporally high-pass filter. Nevertheless, it is not easy to correct the phase unwrapping error of each interferogram and to mitigate the time-varying noise component of the surface deformation from this algorithm due to the assumption of the linear surface deformation in the beginning of the observation. In this paper, we present an improved SBAS technique to complement these problems. Our improved SBAS algorithm uses an iterative approach to minimize the phase unwrapping error of each differential interferogram. This algorithm also uses finite difference method to suppress the time-varying noise component of the surface deformation. We tested our improved SBAS algorithm and evaluated its performance using 26 images of ERS-1/2 data and 21 images of RADARSAT-1 fine beam (F5) data at each different locations. Maximum deformation amount of 40cm in the radar line of sight (LOS) was estimated from ERS-l/2 datasets during about 13 years, whereas 3 cm deformation was estimated from RADARSAT-1 ones during about two years.
Established in the lower reaches of the Nakdong river in Busan, the Noksan national industrial complex is one of the deepest soft ground areas in Korea. In case of the costal landfill having deep soft ground, there is a significant residual settlement over a long period of time. In this study, there was observed ground subsidence occurred in the Noksan national industrial complex from September 2002 to April 2007 by applying DInSAR and SBAS time series method using RADARSAT-1 and Envisat SAR datasets. As a result, it was calculated that ground subsidence developed at the velocity of about maximum 10 cm/yr and mean 6 cm/yr at the eastern center, west, western center and southern area contiguous on the coastline of the study area during the period from September 2002 to April 2007. In addition, the RADARSAT-1 average displacement map has been compared with the total displacement map observed by accurate magnetic probe extensometer during the period from 2001 to 2002. Since the time series displacement has shown a linear trend mostly, we consider that continuous monitoring should be needed until the ground subsidence of the study area has been stabilized.
