An Experimental Study on Heat Transfer Characteristics in Plate Heat Exchangers with R134A (R134A를 이용한 판형 열교환기의 열전달 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Experiments on the condensation and evaporation heat transfer characteristics inside plate heat exchanger with R134A are performed in this study. The test plate heat exchangers in 45o, 55o and 70o shevron angle are used. Varying the mass flux of the refrigerant and the saturation temperatures, the average heat transfer coefficients are investigated. It is shown that the heat transfer is increased with increasing shevron angle. Experiments results show that average condensation heat transfer coefficients are decreased with increasing condensation temperature but those of evaporation are increased with increasing evaporation temperature.

Prediction and Experiment of Pressure Drop of R22 and R134a on Design Conditions of Condenser (응축기의 설계조건에서 R22와 R134a의 압력강하 예측 및 실험)

  • An experimental study on the refrigerant-side pressure drop of slit fin an tube heat exchanger has been carried out. A comparison was made between the predictions of previously proposed empirical correlations and experimental data for the pressure drop on design conditions of condenser in micro-fin tube for R22 and Rl34a. Experiments were carried out under the conditions of inlet refrigerant temperature of $60^{\circ}C$ and mass fluxes varying from $150\;to\;250\;kg/m^{2}s$ for R22 and Rl34a. The inlet air conditions are dry bulb temperature of $35^{\circ}C$, relative humidity of 40% and air velocity varying from 0.68 to 1.43 m/s. Experiments show that pressure drop for R134a was $22{\sim}22.6%$ higher than R22 for the degree of subcooling $5^{\circ}C$ For the mass fluxes of $200{\sim}250\;kg/m^{2}s$, the deviation between the experimental and predicted values for the pressure drop was less than ${\pm}20%$ for R22 and Rl34a.

  • This paper deals with heat and mass transfer characteristics and performance evaluation of a counter flow double-tube condenser for a multi-component refrigerant mixture. The local heat and mass transfer characteristics of ternary zeotropic refrigerant mixtures composed of HFC32/HFC125/HFC134a are evaluated for a counter flow double-tube condenser cooled by water. Then, the local values of vapor quality, thermodynamic states at bulk vapor, vapor-liquid interface and bulk liquid, heat flux and condensation mass flux are obtained. The heat exchange performance for ternary zeotropic refrigerant mixtures composed of HFC32/HFC125/HFC134a on the total pressure drop and the heat transfer characteristics are also compared with those for R404A, R410A, R502, R22, R32, Rl23 and R134a.

  • Air conditioning part designs are moving towards higher efficiency and productivity. The expansion device is one of the core parts of an air conditioning system and controls the refrigerant quantity, evaporation load, compression capacity, and condensation capacity. In this study, an electronic expansion valve for two working fluids ($CO_2$ and R134a) was developed for air conditioning systems in vehicles. The valve uses an eccentric cam driving structure instead of a lead screw to decrease manufacturing costs and increase productivity. The pressure resistance and flow rate performance was evaluated using numerical analysis. At maximum operation conditions and burst pressure conditions with $CO_2$, the maximum stresses on the valve model were about 98 MPa and 223 MPa, respectively. The maximum flow rates of $CO_2$ and R134a with different orifice openings were about 550 kg/h and 386 kg/h, respectively. The performance with R134a was verified by experiments.

Regulation of Phenol Metabolism in Ralstonia eutropha JMP134

  • Ralstonia eutrupha JMP134 is a well-known soil bacterium which can metabolite diverse aromatic compounds and xenobiotics, such as phenol, 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2, 4-D), and trichloroethylene (TCE), etc. Phenol is degraded through chromosomally encoded phenol degradation pathway. Phenol is first metabolized into catechol by a multicomponent phenol hydroxylase, which is further metabolized to TCA cycle intermediates via a meta-cleavage pathway. The nucleotide sequences of the genes for the phenol hydroxylase have previously been determined, and found to composed of eight genes phlKLMNOPRX in an operon structure. The phlR, whose gene product is a NtrC-like transcriptional activator, was found to be located at the internal region of the structural genes, which is not the case in most bacteria where the regulatory genes lie near the structural genes. In addition to this regulatory gene, we found other regulatory genes, the phlA and phlR2, downstream of the phlX. These genes were found to be overlapped and hence likely to be co-transcribed. The protein similarity analysis has revealed that the PhlA belongs to the GntR family, which are known to be negative regulators, whereas the PhlR2 shares high homology with the NtrC-type family of transcriptional activators like the PhlR. Disruption of the phlA by insertional mutation has led to the constitutive expression of the activity of phenol hydroxylase in JMP134, indicating that PhlA is a negative regulator. Possible regulatory mechanisms of phenol metabolism in R. eutropha JMP134 has been discussed.

Performance Analysis of an ORC System for Two Different Working Fluids (두 종류의 다른 작동유체가 ORC 시스템의 성능에 미치는 영향)

  • The organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) uses a kind of refrigerant as a working fluid that evaporates at relatively low temperature, as the Rankine Cycle uses superheated steam as the working fluid. A small scale ORC test bench was installed, and two different working fluids (R245fa and R134a) were injected into the test bench. The test bench was in operation with the two different working fluids under the same conditions. The effects against the system performance from the different working fluids were analysed, and root causes were identified. Other factors reflecting the power generation efficiency were also found. A conclusion was drawn, that R245fa makes the system perform better, than R134a.

An experimental study on nucleate boiling of ternary refrigerant R407C (삼중 혼합 냉매 R407C의 핵비등 열전달 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The nucleate boiling heat transfer experiments are performed using a ternary refrigerant R407C which is a candidate of alternatives of HCFC 22. The boiling phenomena for R-32, R-125, and R-134a which are the constituent refrigerants of R407C are also investigated to give the foundation of theoretical research for the mixture component boiling. The nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficients of R407C is less than those of HCFC 22 which has the similar physical and transport properties. Since the experimental results show the deterioration of boiling heat transfer coefficients of ternary mixture refrigerants R407C, the boiling heat transfer coefficients of R407C cannot be obtained by the linear combination of boiling heat transfer coefficients from its constituent components R-32, R125, and R134a.

Experimental study on Effects of POE oil on R134a Evaporation Heat Transfer in Plate Heat Exchanger (판형열교환기에서 POE오일이 R134a 증발 열전달에 미치는 영향에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • To investigate the effect of oil on evaporation heat transfer of plate heat exchanger, evaporation heat transfer experiment was carried out using experimental apparatus for micro gear pumped R134a-oil circulation. By varying oil circulation rate of POE oil from 0 to 5%, evaporation heat transfer performance of plate heat exchanger was investigated. As OCR(Oil Circulation Ratio) increases, the evaporation heat transfer coefficient of R134a decreases and pressure drop increases. When the evaporating temperature is $30^{\circ}C$ and the refrigerant mass flow rate is 80 g/s, evaporation heat transfer rate decreases by 10 % and pressure drop increases by 10% at 2% of OCR condition.

Influence of Refrigeration Oil on Evaporation Heat Transfer of R-134a in a Horizontal Micro-Fin Tube (냉동유가 수평 마이크로 핀관내 R-134a의 증발열전달에 미치는 영향)

  • CFC-12, which has been used most widely in automobile air conditioners and household refrigerators is scheduled to be phased out soon because of its high ozone depletion potential. Now HFC-134a is suggested as an alternative refrigerant for CFC-12. In this Study, we intended to investigate how PAG oil influence evaporation heat transfer and flow pattern, using R-134a and PAG oil influences evaporation heat transfer and flow pattern, using R-134a and PAG oil in the horizontal miro-fin evaporation tube. Experiments were conducted under the flowing est conditions : mass velocity 86-250kg/$m^2$s, heat flux 5-30 ㎾/$m^2$, oil concentration 0-21 wt.% and saturation temperature 5$^{\circ}C$. Local evaporation heat transfer coefficients were found to be higher at the top, side and bottom of the tube in this order. Average heat transfer coefficients turned out to increase with oil concentration increment up to 3 wt.% oil concentration, whereas heat transfer coefficients gradually decreased over 3 wt.% oil concentration, because of oil-rich liquid film was formed on the heat transfer surface. Flow patterns were rapidly transitioned to annular regimes up to 3 wt.% oil concentration. In case of pure refrigerant, measured heat transfer coefficients in the experiments were similar to those of Kandlikar's correlation.
