  • A sea water source cascade heat pump was designed and tested in this study. The system was designed to perform a single stage operation in summer, as well as a cascade operation in winter to ensure the high temperature lift. A steady-state simulation model was developed to analyze and optimize its performance. The simulation results show that the R717 exhibits best performance among combinations considered in this study. A R410A also exhibits the highest performance among HFCs with the smallest compressor displacement. A 15-RT R410A-R134a pilot system was installed in the 5-story commercial building at Samcheok City by the East Sea. A scroll type R410A compressor, a reciprocating type R134a compressor, plate type condenser/ evaporator/ cascade heat exchanger and two electronic expansion valves were used to build a pilot. A titanium plate type heat exchanger is also used for the heat exchanging with a sea water. The heat source/sink water is supplied from the well below the seashore in the depth of 5 m. In the initial test of the system, supply water temperature was rising up to $67^{\circ}C$ using a sea water heat source of $9^{\circ}C$, while an ambient temperature was $4.5^{\circ}C$.

  • In order to predict thermodynamic performance of refrigeration system, it is required to know the oil concentration of the refrigerant/oil mixture. The current method to measure the oil concentration is to extract the working mixture and then to measure the oil weight. However, it is Quite necessary to estimate oil concentration without any extraction of the working fluid. In this study a new method and working equation is presented as follows. It is based on the measurement of spedific gravity and temperature : $$C=a+b{\times}t+c{\times}t^2+(d+e{\times}t+f{\times}t^2){\times}SG$$ C is oil concentration, t is temperature($^{\circ}C$), SG is specific gravity of mixture and a~f is coefficients. The oil concentration ranges over 0~12 wt% and the temperature ranges over $20{\sim}50^{\circ}C$. The specific gravity and temperature are measured using the on-line densimeter and thermometer. This working equation enables to predict the oil concentration without any extraction of the mixture. This equation can be applied for R-12/Naphthenic oil and R-134a/POE oil oiquid mixtures.

  • A performance analysis simulation program that can be applied to a hermetic reciprocating compressor with various refrigerants has been developed. For the numerical analysis, the passage of refrigerant in compressor is subdivided into control volumes. Instead of the ideal gas assumption, CSD equation of state is applied to calculate the thermodynamic properties of refrigerants. To verify the validity of developed program, the result has been compared with the experimental data served by the compressor supplier. The performance of each refrigerant and the possibility of direct application are estimated by applying R12, 134a, R290, R600a and R290/R600a mixture to an existing compressor. Also, parametric study for various crank rotating speeds and the mole fractions of refrigerant has been performed.

  • This study was performed to find out the possibility that hot waste water from a thermoelectric power plant can be applied to Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) by comparing the performance characteristics for use of the ocean surface water ($25^{\circ}C$) and hot waste water ($35^{\circ}C$) as a secondary fluid. The parameters considered in this study are four; superheating temperature, subcooling temperature, turbine efficiency, and pump efficiency. Main results of this study are summarized as follows : Overall efficiency of applying hot waste water to ORC is 87% higher than that of surface water. Thus it could be confirmed that hot waste water of the thermoelectric power plant can be applied to ORC.

  • Recently, research on high-efficiency refrigeration cycles that apply an ejector to basic cycles has progressed actively. The role of the ejector and the performance of refrigeration cycles are subordinate to ejector locations. In this study, the performance of three refrigeration cycles with different ejector locations is compared and analyzed. The results showed an increased COP in all cycles due to the application of the ejector, with the highest increase of 44% compared to a basic refrigeration cycle. The ejector refrigeration cycle proposed in this study presents the highest COP, 3.47. Moreover, the decrease in condensation capacity in Bergander's cycle, Xing's cycle, and our proposed ejector refrigeration cycle went up to 21%. In refrigeration cycles applying the ejector, the pressure ratio of the ejector, the vapor fraction of discharge, and compression ratio are important factors for COP enhancement. For this reason, detailed and accurate control of these is significant.

  • In order to improve excessive spring-back behavior as a result of the roll forming process using ultra high strength steel (UHSS) sheet, local softening in region of a partial area expected to be deformed on an initial blank is considered in this study. With SPFC1470 UHSS sheet with initial blank thickness of 1.20mm, the local softening is performed with the following conditions: temperatures of 500℃, 550℃, 600℃ and 650℃, and holding time of 20s, 40s, 80s and 160s. Mechanical properties, such as yield stress and tensile strength, as well as elongation, are evaluated through uniaxial tensile tests, while the microstructural characteristics as a result of local softening are also investigated using the heat-treated specimens. As a result, it is shown that the spring-back behavior of the roll-formed prototype was reduced about by 78.9%, when the local softening at about 500℃ was performed for 160s considering the practical manufacturing condition.

  • CdR aminohydrolase activity in varying developmental stages of Drosophila melanogaster was studied in an attempt to correlate with ageing. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The catabolic pathway of CdR in Drosophila melanogaster seemed to be $CdR \\to UdR \\to U$. 2. The enzyme activity was demonstrated in the adults and no activity was observable in both larva and pupa. 3. The enzyme activity of the adult was found to be higher in older flies than in younger ones. 4. The results were of suggestive of a possibility that enzyme activity might be correlated with ageing and/or developmental stages of Drosophila melanogaster.

  • With the 14 m radio telescope at DRAO and the 4 m at Nagoya University, we have made detailed maps of $^{12}CO$ and $^{13}CO$ emissions from two Barnard objects B133 and B134 in the $J=1{\rightarrow}O$ rotational transition lines. Usual LTE analyses of the CO observations led us to determine the distribution of column densities over an entire area encompassing both globules. Total gas masses estimated from the column density map are $90\;M_{\odot}$ and $20\;M_{\odot}$ for B133 and B134, respectively. The radial velocity of B133 is red shifted with respect to B134 by $0.8\;km\;s^{-1}$, which is too lagre to bind the two clouds as a binary system. We have shown that the usual stability analysis based on the simplified version of virial theorem with the second time-derivative of the moment of inertia term $\ddot{I}$ being ignored could mislead us in determining whether a given cloud eventually collapses or not. The lull version of the scalar virial theorem with the $\ddot{I}$ term is shown to be useful in following up the time-dependent variations of the cloud size R and its streaming velocity $\dot{R}$ as functions of time. Results of our stability analysis suggest that B133 will eventually collapse in $(2{\sim}4){\times}10^6$ years.

  • Motivated by recent work of Uralegaddi and Sarangi[12], we aim at presenting here system study of novel subclass $R_{\alpha}[{\mu},{\beta},{\xi}]$ of prestarlike functions. Further using operators of fractional calculus, we have obtained distortion theorem for $R_{\alpha}[{\mu},{\beta},{\xi}]$. Lastly the extreme points of $R_{\alpha}[{\mu},{\beta},{\xi}]$ are obtained.
