  • An experimental investigation of the fatigue through crack growth behavior under simple stepped variable loading condition has been performed using Al7075-T651. Experiments were carried out by using cantilever bending type specimens, with chevron notches on a small electro-magnetic test machine. Tensile overloads have a retarding effect on the fatigue crack growth rates, therefore tensile overloads were used for the beneficial effect on the fatigue life. While in most cases compressive overloads have only a vanishing effect on crack growth rates, some experiments with single edge crack tension specimens reveal a marked growth retardation. The stress ratios used in this investigations varies from R=0.32 to 0.81, from R=0.04 to 0.76, from R=-0.15 to 0.73, and from R=-0.33 to 0.68 and the peak load for each case was not varied. The crack growth and crack closure were measured by Kikukawa's compliance method with a strain gauge mounted on the backside of each specimens. The results obtained are as follows. When the stepped variable load was applied, the smaller the stress ration was, the larger the delayed retardation of the crack growth rate was. The fatigue crack growh rate data obtained for through cracks were plotted well against the effective stress intensity factor range from 4.0 to 20.0MP{a^{SQRT}m}. It was found that the effective stress intensity factor range ratio was related well to the opening stress intensity factor, the maximum stress intensity factor, and crack length.

  • A large-scale culture of hepatitis A virus in human diploid MRC-5 cells was conducted. In a roller bottle culture, the virus was grown to a maximum titer in 3 weeks after infection. Over 95% of the cell-associated virus was excreted after culturing the infected cells in suspension media without fetal bovine serum for 3 days. The cultured virus was inactivated with formalin, concentrated by ultrafiltration, and partially purified by ultracentrifugation in a non-ionic gradient medium of Renocal. Two separate peak fractions showing high anti-HAY ELISA titer were pooled and about 40% of HAV antigen was recovered by this purification procedure. Of the partially purified vaccine, the protein pattern in SDS-PAGE and immunogenicity in mice were compared with a commercial HAV vaccine. In SDS-PAGE, the purified vaccine in this study and the commercial vaccine showed almost the same protein pattern. The seroconversion rate of the purified vaccine in mice was not different from that of the commercial vaccine. Therefore, we could prepare a good grade of HAV vaccine by a simple purification procedure although the purification itself was not completed.

  • Two-dimensional analysis provides a comprehensive description of the structure, scales of pattern and directional components in a spatial data set. In spectral analysisi, four functions are illustrated,; the autocorrelation, the periodogram, the R-spectrum and the $\theta$ -spectrum. The R-spectrum and $\theta$ -spectrum function respectively summarize the periodogram in term of scale of pattern and directional components. Sampling is measured in the Naejang National Park area where the Daphniphyllum trees grow. 320 contiguous (15$\times$15)m plots are located along the transect and density of all trees over DBH 3 cm recorded respectively. 12 species of vascular plant are recorded in this survey area. The trend surface of density of all plant are estimated using polynomial regression and are exhibited in 3-dimensional graph and density contour map. Transformation to the corresponding polar spectrum from the periodogram emphasized the directional components and the scales to pattern. R-spectrum corresponding to the scale of pattern of periodogram showed a large peak 15.47 in the interval 9$\theta$-spectrum corresponding to directional components have two peaks 8.28 and 11.05 in the interval $35^{\circ}\theta <45^{\circ}and 125^{\circ}\theta< <135^{\circ}, respectively. Programs to compute all the analyses described in this study was obtained from Dr. Ranshow and was translated to BASIC by the author.

  • The radiation driven response function (R$\_$q/) for AP and HMX propellant was obtained and compared with experimental results by using a simple $\alpha$$\beta$γ flame model rather than with detailed chemistry. For an AP propellant, the profile of heat release was assumed by the experimental data. The calculated R$\_$q/ shows a frequency shift of the peak amplitude to the higher frequency and a decrease in the maximum amplitude as radiation increases. In addition, it was found the increase in the total flux could enhance the mean burning rate γ$\_$b/ while the phase differences between the radiation and resulting conduction could consequently reduce the fluctuating amplitude Δγ$\_$b/. Fortunately, this is the qualitative duplication of the behavior recently observed in the experiments of RDX propellants. For HMX, the response function R$\_$q/ has been calculated and showed a quite good agreement with the experimental data. Even though the fairly good agreement of R$\_$q/ with experimental ones, the unsteady behavior of HMX was not reproduced as the radiation input increased. This is due to lack of the material properties of HMX or the physical understanding of HMX burning at high pressure.

  • Scaled brick masonry panels were tested under cyclic unialxial compression loading to evaluate its deformation characteristics. An envelope stress - strain curves, a common point curves and stability point curves were obtained for various cyclic test conditions. Loops of the stress-strain hysteresis were used to determine the energy dissipation for each cycle. Empirical expressions were proposed for the relations between energy dissipation and envelope and residual strains. These relations indicated that the decay of masonry strength starts at about two-third of peak stress.

  • Near field ground motions contain distinct and large amplitude pulses in both velocity and displacement. This paper investigates characteristics of near field earthquakes and their effects on seismic demands. 20 EQGMs were selected for this purpose that satisfied 5 conditions for Near field motion. Among them ten EQGMs have one distinct peak velocity pulse in the velocity time history. In this study the responsed are Linear Elastic Response Spectrum(LERS), Response Modification Factor(R) and Inelastic Response Spectrum(IRS). The effect of the selection of Near field EQGMs on these response parameters are investigated.

  • This paper describes ECG data compression algorithm using neural network. As a learning method, we use back error propagation algorithm. ECG data compression is performed using learning ability of neural network. CSE database, which is sampled 12bit digitized at 500samp1e/sec, is selected as a input signal. In order to reduce unit number of input layer, we modify sampling ratio 250samples/sec in QRS complex, 125samples/sec in P & T wave respectively. hs a input pattern of neural network, from 35 points backward to 45 points forward sample Points of R peak are used.

  • Polyurethane modified silicone (PUMS) was synthesized from various molecular weights of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS 2000, PDMS 6000, PDMS 20000), polypropyleneglycol with molecular weight of 3000 g/mol (PPG 3000) and 2,4-toluenediisocyanate (TDI) under tin catalyst. Their structures were confirmed by the measurement of FT-IR and $^1H-NMR$, and the thermal properties were studied from DSC and TGA. Glass transition temperature of PUMS exhibited exothermic peak at $-63{\sim}-69^{\circ}C$, and residual weight was 19~35% at $800^{\circ}C$.
