The common features of walking in patients with stroke include decreased gait velocity and increased asymmetrical gait pattern. The purpose of this study was to identify important factors related to impairments in gait velocity and asymmetry in chronic stroke patients. The subjects were 30 independently ambulating subjects with chronic stroke. The subjects' impairments were examined, including the isokinetic peak torque of knee extensors, knee flexors, ankle plantarflexors, and ankle dorsiflexors. Passive and active ranges of motion (ROM) of the ankle joint, ankle plantarflexor spasticity, joint position senses of the knee and ankle joint, and balance were examined together. In addition, gait velocity and temporal and spatial asymmetry were evaluated with subjects walking at their comfortable speed. Pearson correlations and multiple regressions were used to measure the relationships between impairments and gait speed and impairments and asymmetry. Regression analyses revealed that ankle passive ROM and peak torque of knee flexors were important factors for gait velocity ($R^2=.41$), while ankle passive ROM was the most important determinant for temporal asymmetry ($R^2=.35$). In addition, knee extensor peak torque was the most significant factor for gait spatial asymmetry ($R^2=.17$). Limitation in ankle passive ROM and weakness of the knee flexor were major contributors to slow gait velocity. Moreover, limited passive ROM in the ankle influenced the level of temporal gait asymmetry in chronic stroke patients. Our findings suggest that stroke rehabilitation programs aiming to improve gait velocity and temporal asymmetry should include stretching exercise for the ankle joint.
The purposes of this study were to define the pharmacokinetic parameters of vancomycin in Korean neonates, to evaluate current neonatal vancomycin dosing guideline being used in a teaching hospital, and to develop the optimal vancomycin dosing guideline. The evaluation of 35 sets of peak and trough concentrations drawn on current dosing regimen showed that $29\%$ of peak concentrations and $46\%$ of though concentrations were within therapeutic range. Otherwise, pharmacokinetic parameters, based on 62 sets of peak and trough serum concentrations obtained from 39 neonates, showed that mean vancomycin clearance (CL), volume of distribution (Vd), and terminal elimination half-life were $0.13\pm0.08\;L/hr,\;0.94\pm0.48\;L,\;and\;5.6\pm2.13$ hours, respectively. Volume of distribution (Vd) normalized for body weight remained constant throughout PCA range, whereas the absolute CL (r=0.74) and normalized CL (r=0.36) showed high correlation with PCA. Also, the normalized CL showed a strong inverse correlation (r=-0.55) with serum creatinine concentrations (SrCr). Based on the high correlation among PCA serum creatinine concentration, CL, and the daily dosage requirements, the following dosing guideline for vancomycin in neonates was suggested: 10 mg/kg $12{\sim}18$ hourly for < 30 weeks PCA and < 0.6 mg/dl SrCr; 10 mg/kg 18 hourly for < 30 weeks PCA and $0.6{\sim}1.2$ mg/dl SrCr; 10 mg/kg 8 hourly for $30\sim44$ weeks PCA and < 0.6 mg/dl SrCr; 10 mg/kg 12 hourly for $30\sim44$ weeks PCA and $0.6{\sim}1.2$ mg/dl SrCr.
In this study, we analyzed the pulse-duration, pulse-interval and peak-frequency of echolocation call in three species as Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, Pipistrellus abramus, and Myotis macrodactylus. The peak frequency and pulse duration for above mentioned species were 69 kHz, 47 kHz and 49 kHz and $69.39{\pm}8.76\;ms$, $4.95{\pm}0.77\;ms$ and $3.09{\pm}0.48\;ms$ for R. ferrumequinum, P. abramus and M. macrodactylus, respectively. The pulse intervals for R. ferrumequinum, P. abramus and M. macrodactylus were $103.61{\pm}9.05\;ms$, $67.59{\pm}3.47\;ms$ and $66.35{\pm}4.96\;ms$, respectively. The pulse pattern of R. ferrumequinum was setting into a short FM call and linked to long CF call and went through the short FM call again. The pulse pattern of M. macrodactylus was comprised with serial short FM call and the CF call was not checked up in accordance with the spectrogram analysis. The long FM call and short CF call got join together for the P. abramus and the peak frequency was checked up at the pulse ending as CF call.

Background: The aim of this study is to present the basic reference data of kinematic gait analysis of normal Korean adults with 3 dimensional electrogoniometer, $Domotion^{(R)}$. Method: The basic kinematic gait parameters of hip, knee and ankle joints on the sagittal plane were obtained from 10 healthy adults with 5 repetition for each. Three-dimensional gait analysis was performed with $Domotion^{(R)}$ electrogoniometer in 10 meters long flat floor. Each data collected was processed with IBM PC equipped with gait analysis program. Results: Mean maximal hip flexion was $23.05^{\circ}{\pm}4.62^{\circ}$and mean maximal hip extension was $6.46^{\circ}{\pm}1.30^{\circ}$. Knee flexion was observed with two peak values. The first peak knee flexion was $6.50^{\circ}{\pm}2.07^{\circ}$ at 20.4% of gait cycle and the second peak flexion was $50.34^{\circ}{\pm}2.23^{\circ}$ at 75.8% of gait cycle. Mean maximum ankle dorsiflexion was $5.57^{\circ}{\pm}1.19^{\circ}$ at 44% of gait cycle and mean maximum ankle plantar flexion was $15.51^{\circ}{\pm}1.73^{\circ}$ at 68.5% of gait cycle. Conclusion: We concluded three dimensional gait analysis with electrogoniometer $Domotion^{(R)}$ offers a valid and reliable kinematic data and the application of this tools for clinical gait evaluation will be helpful in management of pathological gait.
All-optical switching has been demonstrated in bacteriorhodopsin (bR) based on nonlinear intensity induced excited state absorption. The transmission of a cw probe laser beam at 410 nm corresponding to the peak absorption of M state through a bR film is switched by a pulsed pump laser beam at 570 nm that corresponds to the maximum initial 8 state absorption. The switching characteristics have been analyzed using the rate equation approach considering all the six intermediate states (B, K, L, M, N and 0) in the bR photocycle. The switching characteristics are shown to be sensitive to life time of the M state, absorption cross-section of the 8 state at probe wavelength ($\sigma$$\_$Bp/) and peak pump intensity. It has been shown that the probe laser beam can be completely switched off (100 % modulation) by the pump laser beam at relatively low pump powers, for $\sigma$$\_$Bp/ = O. The switching characteristics have been used to design all-optical NOT, OR, AND and the universal NOR and NAND logic gates for optical computing with two pulsed pump laser beams.
Polyurethane dispersion (PUD) polymers were synthesized by using polyether and polyester polyol. The effect of ionomeric centers, r(NCO / OH) values, chain extender process, and chain extender types on the adhesion properties was investigated. In the case of polyether-based PUD, the ionic center, r value, chain extension process and chain extender types were not adjusted even after adjustment. In the case of polyester-based PUD, when the ionic center content was more than 2.5%, the state of adhesive strength was $2.0kgf/cm^2$ or more. On the other hand, the initial adhesive strength was excellent at about $1kgf/cm^2$ when the ionic center content was over 3.5%. When the r value was 1.3 or more, it was found that the initial bonding strength and the state of bonding strength were excellent at about $1kgf/cm^2$ and $2.1kgf/cm^2$ or higher, respectively. An IR spectrum analysis of the synthesized PUD confirmed that PUD was composed of urethane based on the N-H characteristic peak at $3340cm^{-1}$ and the urethane characteristic peak at $1730cm^{-1}$. Moreover, the characteristic peaks of the isocyanate ($2260cm^{-1}$) used in the preparation of the prepolymer were not observed. As a result, the residual -NCO was not observed, and urethane was completely synthesized.
The objective of this paper is to develop on-line system parameter estimation and damage detection technique from the response measurements through using the Recursive Covariance-Driven Stochastic Subspace identification (RSSI-COV) approach. To reduce the effect of noise on the results of identification, discussion on the pre-processing of data using recursive singular spectrum analysis (rSSA) is presented to remove the noise contaminant measurements so as to enhance the stability of data analysis. Through the application of rSSA-SSI-COV to the vibration measurement of bridge during scouring experiment, the ability of the proposed algorithm was proved to be robust to the noise perturbations and offers a very good online tracking capability. The accuracy and robustness offered by rSSA-SSI-COV provides a key to obtain the evidence of imminent bridge settlement and a very stable modal frequency tracking which makes it possible for early warning. The peak values of the identified $1^{st}$ mode shape slope ratio has shown to be a good indicator for damage location, meanwhile, the drastic movements of the peak of $2^{nd}$ mode slope ratio could be used as another feature to indicate imminent pier settlement.
The changes of amount in flavor components of chewing gum during storage of various relative humidity were studied by GC/MS. The volatile components in chewing gum were extracted by sample preperation and 15 volatile components were identified by NIST/NBS library searching. According to the period of storage, quantities of major volatile components extracted by tetrahydrofuran-methanol solutions were determined by using tetradecane as internal standard. Until 4 weeks, comparing with starting peak area ratio, the decrease of chewing gum flavor components were rapid at 33, 75 than 53 R.H(%). And after 16 weeks, amount of chewing gum flavor at all storage conditions similarly decreased to $45{\sim}49%$ of the initial amount.
The effect of active immunization against porcine somatostatin (SRIF-14) on somatostation and somatotropin secretion profile in 18 gilts was investigated. Gilts were assigned to the following treatments: control (sham injection, n = 6); bovine serum albumin (BSA) (injection of BSA with bacterial protein adjuvant, n = 6); SRIF (injection of BSA-SRIF-14 conjugate with bacterial protein adjuvant n = 6). Serum SRIF and pST were assayed from the blood samples taken on day 7 after the last immunization injection. Anti-SRIF antibody titres were assayed in weekly samples two weeks after the initial immunization to one week after the last immunization. Results revealed that the immunization protocol used in the present investigation failed to produce antibodies capable of neutralizing endogenous somatostatin. In addition, the porcine somatotropin assay revealed no significant differences in baseline pST concentration, mean peak amplitude and number of peaks during a 24 h secretory period among SRIF, BSA and control treatment. There were also no differences in SRIF baseline concentration, peak amplitude, and number of peaks during a 24 h secretory period among any of the three treatments. Circulating concentrations of pST and pSRIF were highly correlated (r = -0.09). Furthermore, anti-SRIF antibody titre was not detected in the serum of the gilts actively immunized against SRIF. These data, collectively, suggest that the protocol employed in the present investigation for active immunization against SRIF is not an effective method for changing SRIF and pST secretion profiles of the gilt and thus to enhance performance.
Soil stabilization is an essential engineering process to enhance the geotechnical properties of soils that are not suitable for construction purposes. This study focuses on using coconut coir, a natural fibre to enhance the soil properties. Lime, an activator is added to the reinforced soil to augment its shear strength and durability. An experimental investigation was conducted to demonstrate the effect of coconut coir fibers and lime on the consistency limits, compaction characteristics, unconfined compressive strength, stress-strain behaviour, subgrade strength and durability of the treated soil. The results of the study illustrate that lime stabilization and coir reinforcement improves the unconfined compressive strength, post peak failure strength, controls crack propagation and boosts the tensile strength of the soil. Coir reinforcement provides addition contact surface, improving the soil-fibre interaction and increasing the interlocking between fibre and soil and thereby improve strength. Optimum performance of soil is observed at 1.25% coir fibre inclusion. Coir being a natural product is prone to degradation and to increase the durability of the coir reinforced soil, lime is used. Lime stabilization favourably amends the geotechnical properties of the coir fibre reinforced soil.
