An auxin-producing bacteria (2SJ8-02) was isolated from waste mushroom bed of Agaricus bisporus in Buyeo-Gun, Chungnam. The strain 2SJ8-02 was classified as a novel strain of Pantoea rwandensis based on a chemotaxanomic and phylogeneticanalyses. The isolate was confirmed to produce indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), one of auxin hormones, by TLC and HPLC analyses. The maximum concentration of IAA, $122mg\;L^{-1}$ was detected from the culture in R2A broth containing 0.1% tryptophan for 24 h at $35^{\circ}C$. The molecular weight of the main peak obtained by LC-mass analysis was 175 corresponding to that of IAA. To investigate the growth-promoting effects to the crops, the culture broth of Pantoea rwandensis 2SJ8-02 was infected to water cultures and seed pots of mung bean. In consequence, the adventitious root induction and root growth of mung bean were two times higher than those of the control.
Fresh tea leaves grown in Jeju Island and Jeonnam Province of South Korea were plucked and processed. Volatile compounds (VCs) were analyzed and identified with SPME-GC/GC-MS/GC-O. The VCs of green teas were classified into two major categories based on their aroma characteristics: the Greenish (Group I), and Floral (Group II) odorants. It was found that the VCs were decreased significantly in fresh tea leaves as they were plucked at the later stages of cultivation. The ratio of VCs responsible for Group I and Group II compounds was well-balanced in tea leaves plucked in May, but the balances were changed when the fresh leaves were processed. The major VCs of fresh tea leaves in Jeju and Jeonnam were n-hexanal, E-2-hexenal, Z-3-hexenal, myrcene, benzyl alcohol, linalool, and phenyl alcohol. Also, Jeju and Jeonnam tea leaves had different aroma composition. n-Heptanol, ${\beta}-pinene$, benzaldehyde, and ethyl salicylate were found in Jeju fresh tea leaves, and Z-3-hexenol, E-2-hexenol, and methyl n-heptanoate were detected in Jeju dry tea leaves. On the other hand, Z-linalool oxide and myrcene were found in Jeonnam dry tea leaves. The SPME-GC method showed high reproducibility (RSD, 7.4%) with no-artifact formation. In this study, optimum plucking period of tea leaves could be determined for production of high quality green tea with a well-balanced aroma and characteristic VCs in green tea according to growing areas.
Glycoprotein hormones have a common $\alpha$-subunit that is involved in the signaling pathway together with G protein, adenylcyclase and cAMP induction; however, it is an unclear how this common structure is related to hormonal action. To determine the biological functions of the COOH-terminal amino acids in the $\alpha$-subunit of these glycoprotein hormones, a tethered-molecule was constructed by fusing the $NH_2$-terminus of the $\alpha$-subunit to the COOH-terminus of the $\beta$-subunit of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG). The following deletion mutants were created by PCR; Ile was inserted at position 96 to form ${\Delta}96$, Lys was substituted at position 95 to form ${\Delta}95$, His was inserted at position 93 to form ${\Delta}93$ and Tyr was substituted at position 87 to form ${\Delta}87$. Each mutant was transfected into CHO-K1 cells. Tethered-wt eCG, and ${\Delta}96$, ${\Delta}95$, and ${\Delta}93$ mutants were efficiently secreted into the medium but the ${\Delta}87$ mutant was not secreted. Interestingly, the RT-PCR, real-time PCR, and northern blot analyses confirmed that the RNA was transcribed in the ${\Delta}87$ mutant. However, the ${\Delta}87$ mutant protein was not detected in the medium or the intracellular fraction of the cell lysates. The LH- and FSH-like activities of the recombinant proteins were assayed in terms of cAMP production using rat LH/CG and rat FSH receptors. The metabolic clearance rate (MCR) was determined by injecting rec-eCG (2 IU) into the tail vein. The ${\Delta}95$ and ${\Delta}93$ mutants were completely inactive in both the LH- and FSH-like activity assays. The ${\Delta}96$ mutant showed slight activity in the LH-like activity assay. In comparison to the wild type, the activity of the ${\Delta}96$ mutant in the FSH-like activity assay was the highest among all the mutants. The MCR assay in which rec-eCG was injected showed a peak at 10 min in all the treatment groups, which disappeared 4 h after injection. These results imply a direct interaction between the receptor and the COOH-terminal region of the a-subunit. The data also reveal a significant difference in the mechanism by which the eCG hormone interacts with the rLH and rFSH receptors. The COOH-terminal region of the $\alpha$-subunit is very important for the secretion and functioning of this hormone.
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that are carcinogenic and persistent will be restricted in consumer products from December 27, 2015 by EU REACH regulation. Pretreatment using Soxhlet extraction and quantitative analysis by GC-MS were studied to develop the method for analyzing 18 PAHs in consumer products as well as to detect the amounts and the kinds of PAHs in consumer products such as grips of a bag and a hammer, a cable and a plastic sandal. Linearity and precisions were evaluated by analyses of the standard PAH solutions ranging from 0.3125 mg/L to 5.00 mg of each of 18 PAHs. Linearity of resulting standard curves for all 18 PAHs were obtained with $R^2$ above 0.999. Precisions of the retention times and the peak areas were found to be 0.00%~0.05% and 1.16%~3.69% of relative standard deviations, respectively. The recoveries for spiked samples were all around 95%~105% after Soxhlet extration using three different solvents such as dichloromethane, hexane and toluene. The limits of quantitation for 18 PAHs in solutions and polymer samples by GC-MS were evaluated to be 0.327 mg/L (Benzo[ghi]perylene)~0.464 mg/L (Acenaphthylene) and 1.635 mg/kg (Benzo[ghi]perylene)~2.32 mg/kg (Acenaphthylene) based upon dilution factor of 5, respectively. Under the developed analytical method, only trace amounts of phenanthrene were detected in three samples while 15 kinds of PAHs including phenanthrene were detected in a grip of hammer with concentrations of maximum 83.4 mg/kg of Phenanthrene and minimum 8.5 mg/kg of Acenaphthylene. Further studies are needed to decrease the quantitation limit and to check the feasibility of decreasing Soxhlet time as well as to demonstrate cases that the clean up is required.

An effort of preliminary type has been made to develope a practical method for the waterway area determination of a drainage outlet in rural or agricultural areas. The Seoul meteorological station was selected as tile index station, and the maximum rainfalls-duration-frequency (R-D-F) relation of short-time intense rainfalls was first established. A frequency analysis of the daily rainfalls for the 75 stations selected throughout the country resulted the 50-year daily rainfall for each station. The rainfall factor, which is defined here as the ration of 50-year daily rainfalls of individual station and the index station, was determined for the 8 climatological regions divided in this study. Following the US SCS method the runoff number of a watershed was given based on the soil type, land-use pattern, and the surface treatment. With this runoff number and the R-D-F relationship the runoff factors for the index station were computed and hence a nomogram could be drawn which makes it possible to determine the runoff factor for a given rainfall number and a rainfall of specific duration and frequency. With this done, the potential runoff of a watershed for a given rainfall duration could be calculated, based on the unit hydrograph theory, by multiplying the rainfall factor, the runoff factor, and the drainage area of the watershed under consideration. Then, the maximum runoff potential was determined by varying the rainfall duration and finding out the duration which results the peak discharge of a gived return period.
Purpose: Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) has been considered a biochemical marker for myocarditis in Kawasaki disease. We performed this study to determine its quantitative significance. Methods: We attempted to correlate log-transformed BNP concentrations (log-BNP) and clinical, laboratory, and echocardiographic variables in 81 children with Kawasaki disease. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine the variables independently associated with log-BNP concentration. Results: Serum C-reactive protein level (P<0.0001), serum alanine aminotransferase concentration (P =0.0032), white blood cell count (P=0.0030), and left ventricular mass index (P=0.0024) were positively related with log-BNP, and hemoglobin level (P<0.0001), serum albumin level (P<0.0001), $Na^+$ concentrations (P<0.0001), left ventricular fractional shortening (P=0.0080), and peak early diastolic tissue velocity of the left ventricular basal lateral segment (P=0.0045) were negatively related to the log-BNP concentration. Multiple regression analysis showed that serum albumin concentration ($R_2$=0.31, P=0.0098) and left ventricular mass index ($R_2$=0.09, P=0.0004) were significantly associated with the log-BNP concentration. Conclusion: Elevated BNP levels during the acute phase of Kawasaki disease may be attributable to cardiac dysfunction associated with the increase in left ventricular mass, and log-BNP concentration may be a quantitative biochemical marker of myocarditis in Kawasaki disease.

The magnetic and thermal properties of NiFe/IrMn/CoFe with Mn additions have been studied. As grown CoFe pinned-layers with IrMn-Mn have dominantly larger exchange biasing field( $H_{ex}$) and blocking temperature( $T_{b}$) than when pure I $r_{22}$M $n_{78}$ is used. The magnetic properties improve, $H_{ex}$ and $T_{b}$ improve with 77-78 vol% Mn, but drop considerably with more Mn additions, losing magnetic properties of theb NiFe/IrMn/CoFe with addition 0.6 vol % Mn. The average x-ray diffraction peak ratios fcc (111)CoFe of (111)IrM $n_3$ textures for the Mn inserted total vol of 75, 77, and 79 vol% were about 1.4, 0.8, and 0.6, respectively. For the sample without Mn inserted layer, the $H_{ex}$ between I $r_{22}$M $n_{78}$ and CoFe layers is almost nothing. For two multilayer as-grown samples with ultra-thin Mn layers of 77 vol % and 79 vol %, the $H_{ex}$s are 250 Oe and 150 Oe, respectively. In case of IrMn with 77.5 vol% Mn, the $H_{ex}$ was 444 Oe up to 30$0^{\circ}C$ endured of 363 Oe at 40$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. Mn additions improve the magnetic properties and thermal stabilities of NiFe/IrMn/CoFe. Those increase the $H_{ex}$ and $T_{b}$. In applications where higher $H_{ex}$ and $T_{b}$ are accept, proper concentrations of Mn can be used.n can be used.be used.
Estimation of chlorophyll a concentration (CHL) on coastal areas using remote sensing has been mostly performed through multi-spectral satellite image analysis. Recently, various studies using hyperspectral imagery have been attempted. In particular, airborne hyperspectral imagery is composed of hundreds of bands with a narrow band width and high spatial resolution, and thus may be more effective in coastal areas than estimation of CHL through conventional satellite image. In this study, comparative analysis of hyperspectral and satellite-based CHL images was performed to estimate CHL in coastal areas. As a result of analyzing CHL and seawater spectrum data obtained by field survey conducted on the south coast of Korea, the seawater spectrum with high CHL peaked near the wavelength bands of 570 and 680 nm. Using this spectral feature, a new band ratio of 570 / 490 nm for estimating CHL was proposed. Through regression analysis between band ratio and the measured CHL were generated new CHL empirical formula. Validation of new empirical formula using the measured CHL showed valid results, with R2 of 0.70, RMSE of 2.43 mg m-3, and mean bias of 3.46 mg m-3. As a result of applying the new empirical formula to hyperspectral and satellite images, the average RMSE between hyperspectral imagery and the measured CHL was 0.12 mg m-3, making it possible to estimate CHL with higher accuracy than multi-spectral satellite images. Through these results, it is expected that it is possible to provide more accurate and precise spatial distribution information of CHL in coastal areas by utilizing hyperspectral imagery.
To elucidate a potential contribution of endotheline-1[ET-1] to the genesis of pulmonary hypertension and postoperative pulmonary hypertensive crisis in the patients with heart disease, we measured plasma levels of the ET-1 during perioperative period of open heart surgery. In addition, we examined changes of ET-1 during perioperative period and correlations between ET-1 levels and hemodynamic variables. 12 patients including 5 acquired heart disease and 7 congenital heart disease patients were selected randomly as a study group, Group A and B, respectively. 6 patients proved not having heart or hemodynamic problem were selected as a control, Group C. 110 blood samples from pulmonary artery[ET-P] and radial artery[ET-S] were taken and assayed by Sep-pak extraction and RIA. ET-1 levels of Group A were ET-P, 3.94$\pm$5.31pg /ml, ET-S, 3.10$\pm$2.90pg/ml[p>0.05], Group B were ET-P, 1.63$\pm$0.62pg/ml, ET-S, 1.99$\pm$2.45pg/ml[p>0.05], Group C were ET-P, 1.97$\pm$2.02pg/ml, ET-S, 1.72$\pm$0.77pg/ml[p>0.05]. There were no statistically significant differences of ET-1 levels among the Group A, B, C[p>0.05]. There was no correlation between pulmonary artery pressure[PAP] and ET-1 level[p>0.05], and ET-1 levels were not increased even in the cases of pulmonary hypertensive criwis or low cardiac output syndrome, whereas significant correlation between ET-S and pulmonary vascular res-istance[Rp] [r=0.36, p<0.05], and negative correlation between ET-S and OS saturation of pulmonary artery[OS-P][r= -0.49, p<0.01] were identified. Another significant finding was peak increase of ET-1 levels in the postoperative period 1 hour[p<0.05] and then gra-dualy decrease through the postoperative period. In conclusion, ET-1 has no correlation with PAP, whereas correlation with Rp, and inverse correlation with OS-P. It is suggested that ET-1 is neither the direct causative substance of pulmonary hypertension nor pulmonary vasospasm but there must be increased production of ET-1 in chronic pulmonary hypertensive state. Counter-regulatory mechanism to ET-1 is speculated during the pulmonary vasospasm.

The transmittance properties of fishing lamp in stick-held dip net fishing vessel for Pacific saury was investigated during nighttime operations in the North Pacific on May 19 and 24, 2003. The incandescent lamps of red color (750W${\times}$100) and halogen lamps (750W${\times}$521) were used as a fishing lamp for gathering Pacific saury. The relative irradiance of red incandescent lamp and halogen lamp in the air showed peak in 1,052nm of wave length. However, the irradiance of halogen lamp below 600nm of wave length was higher than that of incandescent lamp. The relationship between underwater illuminance (Y) and water depth (X) of sunlight in the observation areas A (37$^{\circ}$ 11'N, 178$^{\circ}$ 46'W) and B (31$^{\circ}$ 11'N, 178$^{\circ}$ 01'E) is represented as follows; $Y=2572.2{\cdot}e^{-0.0721X},\;R^2=0.9915$$Y=3312.4{\cdot}e^{-0.0619X},\;R^2=0.9837$ The distribution of underwater illuminance of observation areas A and B showed low value of 0.31x and 0.61x in 50m depth, respectively. In the fishing grounds of Pacific saury, the light intensity of distribution depth was above 0.51x.
