Condensation heat transfer and pressure drop of R245fa were investigated experimentally in a plate-shell heat exchanger which consisted of thirty seven counter flow channels formed by thirty-eight plates with a chevron angle of $50^{\circ}$. The upflow of the water in one channel receives heat from the downflow of R245fa in the other. The effects of refrigerant mass flux, imposed heat flux, refrigerant saturation pressure, and mean vapor quality on the heat transfer characteristics were explored in detail. Experimental correlations were proposed to predict the condensation heat transfer coefficient and friction factor in terms of the Boiling number, Reynolds number, and Prandtl number. In the experiments, the mean vapor quality in the refrigerant channel was varied from .22 to .82, mass flux from 3 to $5kg/m^2$, imposed heat flux from 1 to $3kW/m^2$, and system pressure from .61 to .81 MPa.

In this study, a solar thermal system is designed to provide hot water and electricity for improvement of solar thermal energy availability in an apartment complex. The electricity is generated with Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) by the solar thermal energy. R134a, R141b and R245fa are selected for operating fluid of the solar thermal ORC system. ORC with R245fa shows the best performance based on the variation of pressure. The irreversibility of component showed that the technology advance of the evaporator ensures a performance improvement. The sensitivity study results indicate that the turbine performance is most effective way to improve the performance of ORC system. An economic analysis showed that approximately 50% more income could be achieved by a solar thermal ORC system with a hot water supply.
The organic Rankine cycle has been widely used to convert the renewable energy such as the solar energy, the geothermal energy, or the waste energy etc., to the electric power. Some previous studies focused to find what kind of refrigerant would be a best working fluid for the organic Rankine cycle. In this study, R245fa was chosen to the working fluid, and the cycle analysis was conducted for the output power of 30kW or less. In addition, properties (temperature, pressure, entropy, and enthalpy etc.) of the working fluid on the cycle were predicted when the turbine output power was controlled by adjusting the mass flowrate. The configuration of the turbine was a radial-type and the supersonic nozzles were applied as the stator. So, the turbine was operated in partial admission. The turbine efficiency and the optimum velocity ratio were considered in the cycle analysis for the low partial admission rate. The computed results show that the system efficiency is affected by the partial admission rate more than the temperature of the evaporator.

The objective of this study is to investigate the performance of a heat recovery heat pump dryer using a R245fa refrigerant experimentally. In this study, the main components of the heat pump dryer were an evaporator, a compressor, a condenser, and an expansion valve. As a result, when the amount of refrigerant varied from 15 kg to 16 kg, the hot air outlet temperature in the condenser and the heat transfer rate were almost kept constant. Therefore, the amount of refrigerant at 16 kg was considered to be a suitable amount in the heat pump. As the air inlet velocity varied from 0.5 m/s to 1.5 m/s, the highest temperature in the condenser could be obtained when the air inlet velocity was 0.5 m/s. The heat transfer rate, system (COP), and hot air outlet temperature were 5.6 kW, 3.4, and $102.5^{\circ}C$, respectively, when the bypass ratio and water temperature were 0% and $60^{\circ}C$.

Recently, there has been a growing interest in sustainable energy. One method that has been used is an organic Rankine cycle using conventional turbine technology with a low-temperature waste heat source. A 200-kW organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system was designed for a waste heat recovery application using R245fa as the working fluid. A radial turbine running at 15,000 rpm was employed to generate more than 200 kW with an expansion ratio of nine. Because an ORC turbine uses a refrigerant as the working fluid, the ideal gas law was not employed to design the turbine. In addition, the complexity of the molecular structure of R245fa made it difficult to design the turbine. Because R245fa has an Ma value of one at a low velocity for the working fluid (about 1/3 of the speed of sound in air) at about $100^{\circ}C$, it easily reaches a supersonic flow condition with a small pressure expansion. To increase the efficiency of the turbine, a dual stage radial-type turbine with a subsonic speed was suggested. This paper will describe the design procedure and performance evaluation of the ORC turbine using R245fa.

In order to study the improvement of the multi stage regeneration cycles, muti-stage processes were applied to the cycles, respectively or together. The kinds of the cycles are multi stage reheater cycle (MS) and multi stage reheater regeneration cycle (MSR). Working fluid used was R134a and R245fa. Temperature of the heat source was $65^{\circ}C$, $75^{\circ}C$, and $85^{\circ}C$, and temperature of the heat sink was $5^{\circ}C$. Optimization simulation was conducted for improving the gross power and efficiency with multi stage reheater regeneration cycle for ocean thermal energy conversion(OTEC) with changing of a heat source, kind of the working fluid, and type of the cycle. Performance analysis of the various components was simulated by using the Aspen HYSYS for analysis of the thermodynamic cycle. R245fa shows better performance than R134a. This paper showed the most suitable working fluid with changing of a heat source and the kinds of working cycle. Compared to each other, MS showed better performance at gross power and MSR showed higher cycle efficiency.
Studies in liquid-vapor ejector, which performs a great efficiency in refrigeration cycle is highly concerned. This paper is based on basic refrigeration cycle and three ejector refrigeration cycles and the comparison and contrasts about when 6 different refrigerants are applied to such refrigeration cycles. All cycles had a percentage increase of COP from 4 to 74% when ejector was applied, and the source of increasement was the decrease of total work done due to ejector's pressure recovery function. When R-245fa is applied to cycle (d), results showed that COP was the most superior in such cycle, R-245fa showed high volume entrainment ratio in all cycles. Future studies in refrigeration cycles will require more knowledge and experiments on ejector's appliance to refrigeration cycles and the actuation of such functions.
Organic Rankine Cycle is widely used to convert the low-grade thermal energy to the electrical energy. However, usually available thermal energy is not supplied constantly. This makes hard to use positive displacement expanders. Hence, turbo-expander has merits to apply as an expander in ORC because it can operate well off-design points even though the mass flowrate is fluctuated. The thermal energy fluctuation causes the turbo-expander to operate in partial admission. In addition, supersonic nozzles are required so that the partially admitted turbine operates efficiently. In this study, R245fa was chosen as a working fluid of ORC. A design method and an analysis technique of supersonic nozzle based on R245fa were developed. The shape of the nozzle was designed by the characteristic method. The thermal properties within the nozzle were estimated and the predicted results were agreed well with the computed results.
An organic Rankine cycle was analyzed to work at the optimal operating point when the heat source is fluctuated. R245fa was adopted as a working fluid, and an axial-type turbine as expander on the cycle was designed to convert the heat energy to the electricity since the turbo-type expander works at off-design points better than the positive displacement-type expander. A supersonic nozzle was designed to increase the spouting velocity because a higher spouting velocity can produce more output power. They were designed by the method of characteristics for the operating fluid of R245fa. Three different cases, such as various spouting velocities, various inlet total temperatures, and various nozzle numbers, were studied. From these results, an optimal operating cycle can be designed with the organic Rankine cycle when the available heat source as renewable energy is low-grade temperature and fluctuated.

In this study, exergy analysis of a thermally activated refrigeration cycle, a combined organic Rankine cycle (ORC), and a vapor compression cycle (VCC) were conducted. It is considered that a system uses a low-temperature heat source in the form of sensible heat, such as various renewable energy sources or waste heat from industries, and one of eight working fluids: R143a, R22, R134a, propane, isobutane, butane, R245fa, or R123. The effects of turbine inlet pressure and the working fluid selected on the exergy destructions (anergies) at various system components as well as the COP and exergy efficiency of the system were analyzed and discussed. The results show that the component of the greatest exergy destruction in the system varies sensitively with the turbine inlet pressure and/or working fluid.
